I voted for, but it would be more accurate to say that I am for some, and not for others. For example, I don't think you should be able to hide the green dot on the map. Invitation of peepers and griefers.

I think the privacy controls should have a bit of a cost.
I want to be able to hide my green dot. In exchange, my entire chat system should respond that I can't be seen if I type, and that I can't hear anything going on around me. This would discourage peeping, as two avs humping without seeing the text is like trying to watch porn on a scrambled channel. I want there to be "permissions"....for instance, my wife might leave me the ability to see where she is and teleport to her on a whim, whereas my favorite store owner might choose to keep me on their "hide my location" list because he or she doesn't want anyone popping in at a bad time. This way, if the wife puts me on that list, I could also say, "baby, is something up?" and avoid walking into drama later by getting it over with now, and if I did the same she has the same right. It would also allow people who are in D/s, like Gorean slavegirls, to hide from their masters if things are going south in their relationship, a right they should have. Same goes for SL celebs like Aimee. _____________________

Would it mean that I'm not allowed to wear pants if I vote against privacy controls?

I am for most privacy controls, as long as they're geared toward privacy, and not being able to invade the privacy of others.
For instance.. I do not believe we should be able to hide our green dots, unless we're on our own land. Not only does this stop us from sneaking up on others while they're expecting privacy on their land, but it's another incentive to tier up to a premium account and pay tier. _____________________

It would also allow people who are in D/s, like Gorean slavegirls, to hide from their masters if things are going south in their relationship, a right they should have. Same goes for SL celebs like Aimee. Celebs should have little bells around their necks like cats so everybody always knows where they are. That keeps them from sneaking up on birds. _____________________

Privacy Please
![]() 05-03-2006 10:16
I can understand and see the opposing viewpoints main concern about stalkers using being invisible as a way to harass. But if you can ONLY make your greendot disapear when you are on your own/group owned land ( as a lot of people are suggesting ), then that wouldnt be a problem. I have also heard people opposed to privacy controls suggest to just go into busy mode, Busy mode can be more of a pain than its worth when you have someone standing next to you that you want to talk to and you have to keep bringing up history to see what they have said. For the people that don't know you can't see what they are typing while you are in busy mode they really get upset when you are non-responsive. Also the auto rejection of inventory is confusing for people sending things... especially those that are new and thinking your just rejecting them so they start freaking out, it makes going into busy mode not so worth it. If we cant have the ability to appear offline I would just be happy with more options in busy mode, like if you want to auto accept all inventory coming in (including sending notecards straight to notecard folder so they dont slap you upside the head right as your about to link something) or something like that and the ability to see what the people that are next to you are saying if you want to.

I like the hide green dot only on your own land even better, for the reason six was stating (if you are working with someone else, perhaps). The only reason I'd want to hide my green dot is if I'm busy making something and other people are using the ballroom to dance or something. My desire to hide my green dot has to do with letting them realize they truly are alone as I am off doing something else. I hate the idea of hiding the green dot and being able to hear tho. that's creepy. I do like the idea of being able to appear out of world to all but selected people because I'm not some famous builder of whom people will think, if they get a busy message, Oh! s/he is doing something important! _____________________

I respect your position on this but not all people want privacy controls for watching avatars do eeet. I want to appear offline but to still be able to talk to my partner thats up in my work station with me :| _____________________

Appearing offline and the green dot are two different things.

Ahhh okay .. I'm not sure I follow what you mean then about disabling the ability to hear and see chat when are appearing offline --- unless you mean that there will be an option to appear offline and visible and offline with an invisible green dot?
My brain itches. *Edit* Okay i think I see what you mean like the ability to hide green dot as something seperate... yes I dont care so much about what happens to my dot LOL however I do wish it pink !_____________________

I'm saying the option to remove the green dot woul dhave the cost of being unabel to communicate, whereas appearing offline would not have any penalty but your green dot would show on the mini.

I dont think hiding your green dot is really relevent to anything other than hiding from people on your friends list.. like for example if I wanted to appear offline to people that search me in find if they are not on my friends list my green dot and where it is, is so meaningless.
I am trying to understand why someone to would even need to hide their green dot from the general public *shrug* _____________________

If I cannot make my green dot disappear, I would at least like the ability to disguise it as somebody else's green dot.

I'm strongly for better privacy controls in a generic sense.
However, I believe these features should be limited to Instant Messaging/Find. I'm thinking of something along the lines of what Yahoo Messenger has today: Show as Offline, Online, Show as Online only to specific people. I'm also not too supportive of the whole 'remove the green dot' thing. And I'm strongly against the idea of having folks appear completely invisible (invis & no name tag) or invisible to scripts in world. I understand that if someone really wants to find you, they will. I'm cool with that. What I'm not cool with, is that when I log on, everyone on my friends list gets a notification that "Travis Lambert is Online". The problem is that there are many folks out there who take this sort of message as an invitation. It amazes me sometimes just how many IMs I can get stacked up with before the world has even finished rezzing around me as I log in. ![]() _____________________

Never want to see green dots removed, ever. I don't want anybody sneaking up on me.
I also imagine it would be a pain in the arse to implement, as the av would have to appear invisible to sensors as well (otherwise it's pointless, I can always tell where you are with a sensor). "Pain in the arse to implement without any really clear benefit" means "won't get done" in my experience. |
