I'd buy one but they don't have guarantees I'll earn cash sitting on them.

If they are logged in and not at their computer and someone IM's them, the customer will not get an answer until they happen to come back to their computer. The costumer will see them logged in and will probably get more ticked off due to the no respnose. If they are logged off, the customer will get the not on line notice and their PM will go to their RL email and they will have an email notification. If they are logged on, get a PM and then their computer crashes, they won't get notified. Staying logged on while away from the computer gives very poor customer service. I agree with you on this in a genral way. That said if I am just farting around the house I will log in to be online so if the other DJ's have a problem I will here the DING DING of the IM box going off and can respond without having to constantly check my email every ten minutes or leave the email client open and updating every ten mintues. Yes its a bit redundant but to each there own. If your ISP isnt unlimited like some of you have stated I understand this and respect your decsion so please repect those of us who are just trying to be courtious to our employees or customers. With that said I whole-heartedly dislike camping chairs,dancepads or whatever. Yes at one time I did use them to my advantage but it got old and wasnt very profitable for me. I dont think the restriction should be removed because then the world would be filled with more people just staying logged on so they dont have to relog when their favorite show is over. Not that this isnt done allready but if the restriction is removed then people will get even lazier. |

staying logged on
08-02-2006 11:25
Camping is about the only major reason I can see for staying logged on overnight.
For new people who have no money nor have any idea (at that point in time) that they can create or get employed to earn lindens. A great way to lindens albiet a very long time to earn money. Everyone has to start somehwere. PLus it is not as if the computer is a live breathing creature that can tell whether or not you are there or away. Time away or time at the computer still takes up energy. So why complain about other people's choices? hasn't yet affected me negatively. |

For most of us outside the US, we don't have unlimited broadband; we pay for a monthly bandwidth allowance (mine is 30gb, which is the top package on my ISP), and if you go seriously over that you get charged extra. Who provides you with your broadband? Mine is a fixed monthly fee for the line and the bandwidth, but I am on a truely unlimited DL setup, there is no top limit to the amount of information I can recieve or send. Hint - try NTL! |

Why would you want to stay logged in for that long if you aren't actually at the computer anyway? _____________________

There are actually valid benefits to this - live performances being one of them. I have to move my mouse after every couple of songs to make sure I do not slump over. I would not want to be logged out during a set that lasted more than 30 minutes. A perfectly valid use of anti-idle gadgets. As would be when moving back and forth between SL and, say, Photoshop, for example. I have a hard time looking at camping as anything but a waste of system resources, since the avatars camping (specially if they are wearing a gabillion scripted attachments) as well as the scripts are nothing but LAG magnets. _____________________

I can think of one reason, for newbies especially with no linden to speak of, to want to stay logged in long periods of time. I've seen examples of this at almost every major casino/mall/club. Just a thought. jes I have to say....I'm guilty of just this. As a newbie, a BROKE newbie at that, I was trying desperately to dance my booty off for L$3 for 10min.!! I really didn't want to sit and watch the same dance moves over and over and over..... so..... But I do see how being signed in and not active could be bad too.... I'll never, ever, ever dance my butt off and try to make money again....I'll instead stand on a corner and have a sign that reads "Will work for food" or something like that. ![]() |

Happy? For who? The owners of the zombies who are earning mere pennies per hour, which has been calculated to be the equivalent of the electricity consumed (which someone somewhere pays for even if you don't individually)? Those with properties in the regions full of campers who can't even get onto their own land because of a club full of campers, and their land made worthless so they can't even move? Those who can get into their region but can hardly do anything because of the lag caused by the campers? The owners of quality places who can't get anywhere on the popularity list, being overtaken by box-like properties full of zombies who are only there because they are bribing people to visit, and making themselves artificially look popular? Newbies soon realise very quickly that camping/dance pads are not the way to make money, and move on to better things. We need to organise a campaign so that there are people at the welcome area to help educate newcomers against this scourge on Second Life which encourages the 'welfare state' mentality. I still refuse to accept that someone paying $50 a month for internet accss on a $1000 computer to play Second Life can't afford $5 every now and then to obtain some play money. Lewis Yea the money they make is what i waste on uploads. It's lower then minimum wage. Both my computers would probably have a value of $1750 together, cuz i built them out of cheap stuff. I earn enough in SL selling my creations, in a few months i would have enough to build another if i wanted. It's easy to make money in SL while still being creative/legit. I never was good at gambling. To me it's like saying "I have money i don't wan't so i'm giving it to these nice casino guys". The last time i gambled i was lucky to earn back what i lost. When i first joined SL the first place i found was "The Edge". They had a raffle ball that gave $10 to random people. I danced there to make money to buy my first avatar. Dancing is much funner then sitting, but these days i'm not much into it anymore, i prefer to script, build, and socialize. I tend to multitask and post in the forums, while my account is parked in a sim i help manage. If i have a need to AFK, i turn on godmode for that. If i'm going to be gone for more then a hour, i definatly turn off the computer. _____________________

As a sufferer from a nearby club/brothel which regularly drags Time Dilation on my land down to below 50% as a result of huge amounts of camping with 20 minimum avies 24hrs a day, my land is virtually unusable, and has been so for a long time, with no hope of improvement.
I have posted a POLL here, allowing you to register your view via a vote. Remember - it could happen to you any time, so maybe "tough luck if your land is unusable" may not be the most thoughtful response ? |

I don't think people should be allowed to idle for hours on end when they are not at the computer, but I do think the 30 minute limit is a little bit too short - if only even for my own purposes. 60-90 minutes would be a little better, as far as I am concerned. It would give us musicians time to complete a show without vanishing from the stage.

sometimes i leave sl on when i go for something to eat, or maybe a bath or whatever, only when i return i have this logged out because ive been away for 30 mins, it can be a bit anoying when you have everything set up in sl and then you have to do it again because you have been logged out, can this be changed?..... Go to SL Exhcange and grab one of the Anti Idlers there, some of which are free. |

In the gaming world, also in older chat servers and mucks, disconnecting idle users meant:
- Free memory and unecessary computer process if the user is not using it. - Cleanup bots and users that got disconnected and have their login locked up. - Save bandwidth for the server, backbones and computers in the way. - Privacy issues: One can use your login while you are not at it (if you´re at public places) I am not sure if it can still be applied, but probably a switch could be set up so people that don´t want it can turn idle disconnection off.(specially useful if you are photoshopping some texture and it is taking long) I do not think it would eat all that much band if you are idling in a place, however if you have some excessive blings and scripts and you are idling, ejecting you would be too rude. _____________________

The Solution is...
c:\documents and settins\your profile\application data\secondlife\user_settings\settings.xml add <!--Allow AFK Mode (TRU FALSE)--> <AllowAFK value="FALSE"/> _____________________
