Did you know that llGiveInventory is broken?

It seems, even though there's a forum thread, people aren't taking note of this.

llGiveInventory() is broken. It fails seemingly randomly, usually in vendors with 50+ items, has been failing since 1.9, and there is no ETA of fix.

Don't think problems with LSL affect you? This one affects anyone who buys things from vendors or one of the three online shopping sites.

Details here, thanks Flipper:

I was aware it was broken, however I didn't know it was still broke =/

One way to determine if someone receives the product or not, at least in mine and Asri's case is... Our vendors are not server based, but they do IM you when a product is purchased, if llGiveInventory fails for whatever reason, we will get the money but no Instant message saying Jane Doe, has purchased blah blah blah... then a few seconds later we get an IM from the customer saying, hey I dindt get my stuff... This may be something to look for to confirm transaction...

I knew it was broken. It's not caused any problems for me yet as far as I know, with my rather small product line, but it certainly could, and it's clearly very disruptive for other people.

Has anyone posted in Answers about it?

I'll repost what I've found here just so everyone doesn't have to go digging. :)

From: Me
I've actually got a solid, reproducable bug that has been occuring since 1.9, and I've seen it pop up several times on SLBoutique.com. Basically, llGiveInventory is failing on what would appear to be random items. I walked Phoenix Linden through the bug and she is working on figuring out what is going on.

Now, to understand fully, llGiveInventory isn't failing COMPLETELY randomly, just on what would appear to be random items. Here's an example:

Let's say I'm selling 100 items through SLBoutique. I have 100 items loaded in my in-world prim (similar to a vendor). Out of the 100 items, 99 will always deliver perfectly, as they should. However, 1 out of the 100 items will always fail. I've checked to make sure the avatar's key and item name are being passed 100% correctly (iNcLuDiNg CaPs), but it always fails for just that particular item. There's been no rhyme or reason to this; I've checking for extra spaces, special characters, and it seems to be occuring with random items.

As you can imagine, this has made SLBoutique.com customer service a nightmare lately. Fortunately, it seems to be a very, very small percentage of items, and an item will either be passed successfully 100% of the time, or fail 100% of the time, so its easy to reproduce.

I'm hoping they get this fixed soon. Its a nightmare, especially when you're working on the scale of 35000 - 40000 total items.

Thanks to everyone for bearing with us.

Also, a fix; take the vendor / SLBoutique prim into your inventory. Rez it in another sim. Take it back into your inventory. Re-rez it in its original location. Ugly, but it works.

I'll re-iterate my plea here again: LL, PLEASE FIX THIS ASAP AND GIVE US FEEDBACK FROM llGiveInventory (in an event) ALREADY! PLEASE! PRETTY PLEASE!

Regards,

-Flip

Not a chance in hell of getting paid back, unfortunately...but that is less than the price of coffee at least! :-(

Shoot me a PM, and if the seller is in my database I'll drop them an email asking them to log in and check out their vendor and get in touch with ya.

Hell. I've had people have trouble passing items to me MANUALLY lately. They try to send three things, only two show up. This is bad because they will sometimes send me NO COPY items.

Nope, just scripted thingies that use llGiveInventory - not boxes set for sale with Original/Copy/Contents selected. However, more and more of the world is relying on networked vendors and such, so its a very significant percentage.

Actually it also happens (rarely) with boxes set for sale as well...
Also like Burke, I have passed people items before and they never get them, it wont even say that they accepted or that I offered...

llGiveInventory has been broken since it was implemented without any scripted method of delivery confirmation. At least that's why I've never been willing to use (trust) it. In fact, it's the primary reason that I don't list Fate Gardens' products on the shopping sites.

It doesn't suprise me that there's no estimated repair time. What do they care? Why should they care?

Interesting - Burke, Sensual, could this have been related to the asset server problems on Tuesday evening / night? I know just about everything was failing that evening, or has this been happening at other times? :-)

They care, but I'm assuming they haven't figured it out yet or else there'd be a patch announcement.

I'm more concerned that residents don't know what's going on with features, because the average user tends to not know LSL.

I just want to know if they know about this, and if they do, does it have a high priority for getting fixed. Knowing they are working on a solution goes a long way toward being patient - at least for me.

So, LL - Do you? Does it?

I really do not want to be called a theif again like I was this morning. Thank the gods I made my vendors to send me a sale record via e-mail.

The big problem I've seen is all the newbies claiming a company has a bad rep. Because of this problem. I'm not looking at it as a big issue in my case but I'm sure it can put a dent in sales.
Would that count as liability that LL would pay out? :o
It is a loss of funds right? Since the warning everyone is obviously scant at best. As if everyone is supposed to read the forums before logging in or something. No way of telling how much it's costed people but it would be a liability in real life business.

The devs? Yes, from what Flip's told me about their hours of troubleshooting sessions.

The execs? Oh, now that's a better question.

I wasn't aware that it was officially broken, but I have noticed an increase of customers saying "I paid for this item and didn't get it" - a problem I have never had in the past. Not a huge number of them, but still a noticeable increase.

Oh I see, good point. Something like this well warrants an explanation on the MOTD so everyone that might be affected is informed about it. Thank Heaven they have such a readily available mass announcement facility.

What is todays MOTD? An announcement about the Town Hall with Philip Linden yes yes I clearly see their obvious care for this issue and the trauma it's causing the resident base.

That has been going on for months.. They told us a while back that it was the asset server glitching and would try to post on days it had "lost" stuff.

I quit using vendors for pretty much everything except for less expensive stuff. It had got to be such a problem and with no delivery confirmation it just wasn't worth the headache.

I'm guessing one of the patches broke something they had band-aided and it's back to loosing stuff again.

Bookmarked this--going to research further and let the right Lindens know ASAP. Anyone else experiencing related problems who hasn't posted yet, please do!

llGiveInventory and file names longer than 34 characters
04-07-2006 01:05
I wrote my own client/server vending system and ran into a bit of trouble with the servers not delivering items. I did some serious debugging, having it report item information every step of the way and verified it was correct up until the point it hit llGiveInventory.

I started to have problems with items not being delivered. I tried different objects, different names, different characters.

Then I thought about file name length. I removed a character at a time until, Presto! It worked! I then tested this with different items adding and subtracting characters. It was always the same result. Any file name longer than 34 characters would fail.

Now I know a string can be 255 characters, and I think a filename can be up to 64 characters in length, so WHY would llGiveInventory be limited to 34 characters?

I bug reported this and the response I got was:

"We've released a new version of Second Life today (version 1.9), and we believe that it will fix many of the issues encountered with the previous release."

... right... still broken.

Can someone else test this and see if I am right, or have I just been staring at scripts for too long. lol

I cannot confirm the 34-character hypothesis:

An object named Object owned by Huns Valen gave you 1234567890123456789012345678901234567890.
