Ooh, share the magic: how do you tell how many sims are on/offline?

Well, I'm assuming the attack was restricted to the mainland, which it apparently was.. The lack of red on the map, and not running into any dead sims as I fly around would kind of suggest that there are no sims down on the mainland?
Edit.. So, 0 down now.. The forums like to go crap out when I try to save edit changes.. ;p

stop bi%^$en
04-15-2006 21:41
<quotes everyone that is Bit%^en>

yes its sad that this happend, but there is only so much LL can do when they have a game that 10000000000000000000000000000 of people play every day so there is prooly 1/2 the amount of people that play reporting others so that just 100000000000 more they have to read/look into/ and do something about so ya its going to take time, you act like you never played a MMO EVER its the same in everygame, when i play wow and report people for things sometimes i dont even get to talk to a GM cause it takes so long......

and they really cant stop things like this from going on cause there is 100000000000000000000000 of people everyday building and scripting 10000000000000000000 of items so its not like they can keep a eye on what everyone is doing at the same time that means the devs would have to have 100000000000000000000000000000000 lindens to stand next to everyone that logs on and keep a eye on what they make or they would have to take out the scripted comands that make everyday items work the way we want them to they would have to make the game where no one can script a thing cause you can make a bomb out of a simple chat spam script that duplicates every 0.1 sec so that it lages out the simulater.....

ya its sad that things like this happen and ya i lost a lot today due to this but you knwo what (ITS GOING TO HAPPEN FROM TIME TO TIME) if you dont want to put up with it then dont play SL.... if you take a breath and settle down to think about it the only way to stop things like this, is to totaly change SL and take out all scripting rights.

for me it just gave me time to play my other game, and just means that when the grid is back up i will have a lot of work to redo......

so again stop Bit%$en or go play There......or turn scrips off on your land and ban everyone so they cant get in :P

From: Allana Dion

In a dance club during a naked dancing contest I let my curiosity control my clicker and I snuck a click on someone's prim penis just to see what would happen, thinking there was no way they could know it was me. What I didn't realize though was that the reason it was already pointing straight up was that someone else had been clicking it (probably the girl he was dancing near) and so my click just happened to be the majic number..... in chat for everyone to see in nice bright spam.... "Allana Dion makes me cum" or something like that, I dont remember the actuall words just my name and cum and i'm sure his dancing partner thinking "wt hell??" As I quickly tped my mortified ass out of there.

As a noob with much time on my hands because I accidently exited the program while sitting at a casino camped out for $54 and rising at $5 per every 10 minutes, This post has been worth the wait. Thank you so much for sharing that with us. I haven't laughed so hard in a long time.

logins
04-15-2006 22:30
I was able to get in, and had an IM waiting. When I clicked it, I got a msg saying I was being logged out because I was "attempting to log in from a different location"!

I exited and came back and it took a few minutes (patience is required) but got back in and all was good. :]

Thank you Lindens. :]

Hmmm... everyone whining about LL should do something to stop this from happening.

Well, the way I see it, it's like any other tool. It has no good or bad intentions on its own. It's up to the individual. Just like We can all Google for instructions on building bombs out of household chemicals that 99% of us probably have. But do we? No.

It's not the tool that has the problem. It's the users & their intent.

I'd say 95-99% of Residents of SL wouldn't intentionally do something like this. I say "intentionally" just cuz someone might goof up learning to script & create a Frankenstein.

They need not do anything. Given how simple and devastating these attacks are, they might want to - not because they love their customers - but because they value their own time, energy, aggravation, and effort.

LL had instituted a "firebreak" system during the last spate of very similar attacks that seemed useful in containing the damage; it appears that they might not have been able to hit the alarm fast enough this time.

Back when SYN-ACK attacks were the way script kiddies got their fun, the router vendors were quick to respond because even though they didn't write the Internet Protocol or TCP and the SYN floods weren't their fault, it made them look bad and they were in the best position to fix it. As it is, the SL grid allows DDoS attacks upon itself and so any countermeasures would have to live there.

Something as conceptually simple as:
  1. Stop the asset system from allowing rezzes
  2. Quick grid kick-out of all players and stop logins (this is already there)
  3. Remove all objects with a creator of "Joe Avatar"
would do the trick with minimal interruption. I fear that LL may not be able to do #3 as prior intentional and unintentional DDoS scripts seem to indicate. If I was on yesterday's clean up team, I know what I'd probably do next time I went into work so that I didn't have blow another day off on this recurrent problem.

It might also help if there were a land tool to limit the number of non-owner objects rezzed during a one-minute period or something.

Someone suggested that "white-hat" testers try to crash the preview grid with Linden approval and so on--the Lindens already ask folks to report bugs.

As for crashing a sim, it is so easy that most scripters have done it by accident at least once, and any one who could read the wiki could write a grid crasher in about five minutes.

It takes about a 6th grade level of programming skill. Maybe third grade if someone is smart.

yes i agree the person who did this did a very very very very stupid thing.

i mean as far as i know its illegal to hack programs such as this yes?

but also i think its a bit of wake up call hopefully to sl and lindens to realise they are a bunch of serious issues that slips right under there noses OR which they do not bother to address untill like now it is too late.

what can be done now? the damage is done we are all siting here waiting for hours because of this problem when it should NEVER EVER havebeen allowed to happen in the first place......
i think linden labs owes us an apology to be hones

they should have been able to have the forsight to pretect agaisnt such major problems....and now it takes this long to fix it?

I totally agree with ya Dark but tto be realistic no matter how much security u may have there is always someone out there to ruin it for all us........ No matter wot it is...... i was online when it first happened and stayed up chatting to friends and now and then trying to get back for over 5hrs..... But hey PPL we cant blame the LINDENS... As they did real good to get it back online

But greater security equals fewer outages.
