but this scares me, would I be wasting my money, does this happen often?
No. I've been playing since November, it's happened 2-3 times in that timeframe, as far as I know.

Well, this is as good a time as any to come forth from the lurking mode. I just joined SL three days ago and am already addicted. I've been through Online game crashes before, the only thing you really can do is sit tight, stay calm and wait it out.
And hang out at the forums because it's the next best thing! I have meandering, meaningless questions up for grabs by all of you more experienced Slers. Pick and choose at yor discretion or level of boredon as you will. 1)So, what's a Jew Stein? Is that a geek term, or something indigenous to SL? 2) How could you tell on that thread (I can't login or some such) from one word that he was the perp? 3) What's the real way people are gathering together in SL? I know it can't be limited to the 'Find'/traffic feature. Or is it? 4) Do most adopt an actual SL persona that is seperate from their RL and RP accordingly? 5) What's the most embarrasing thing you've ever done as a newbie? I couldn't get a box off my head yesterday. And when I visited Yadni's I forgot to uncheck the 'wear clothing now' box and it turned me into a very ugly, blue man. I hope that is the worst of it, but I suspect not. ![]() Sienne/Lis P.S. Apologies in advance if there is a better forum in which to post my rambling pith. |

Jew Stein was the user name of the creater of the objects that did the grid attack. 2) How could you tell on that thread (I can't login or some such) from one word that he was the perp? See above. |

fixing it
04-15-2006 19:43
As was just stated, I'm sure they are doing everything they can to get it back online.
Now for some "Really dumb" statements. It was pointed out that SL Engineers should have a fix for this already in to prevent this from happening. Can I say "DUH"? Can you predict what some jerk of a hacker is going to do to attack the Grid? If so, SL is hiring and I'm sure they'd appreciate having your expertise. My point is, most times the only way a weakness is found is when it gets attacked, as has happened. As far as how often this happens.... I've been a resident of SL since 11/04. In that time, I "Think" it's been down for an extended period maybe 3 times, including today. Now whether it's gone down and been brought back online while I was elsewhere and not trying to get in, I can't say, but I think 3 times in 17 months is not too bad. Abuse.... It sucks. How many THOUSANDS of players are in SL at the same time? How many Lindens are there? You can bet that there isn't one for every player! So what do they do? They set up a system for you to report it. Does it work? I've only had to use it once, myself. Was it immediate? No, but they DO have to have time to investigate. Was is resolved to my satisfaction? Yes it was. Whenever you have a community of people like this, you will have problems. As much as we would like it all to be our own Nirvana, it's not gonna happen. There's a phrase that comes to mind: "Deal with it". If you don't want to be shot, don't go to those locations! If you don't like how someone does something on their lot, don't go there. If you expect SL to be all sweetness and nice, then stick to those locations where it is. All I know for sure is that'll you'll get better results working within the system than crying because the system isn't exactly the way you think it should be. If none of these solutions are satisfactory, then I would suggest you look into some of the very fine Single-Player games on the market, because as long as there are 2 or more people playing the same game, you can bet that both are not 100% satisfied with how things are working. Enuf said. Try to keep the Flames under control. |

1)So, what's a Jew Stein? Is that a geek term, or something indigenous to SL? He is ... A) a kid using his daddy's credit card in which case daddy is going to get a bill soon, hopefully put some effort into figuring out what junior was up to and beat his little ass. OR B) He is a 40 year old dork living in his parents basement who hasn't had a date since 1990 and is just loving the little thrilll he's getting from thinking he's smarter than everyone else because he can crash a grid in.... hmmm the same way a dozen other dorks before him have done. 3) What's the real way people are gathering together in SL? I know it can't be limited to the 'Find'/traffic feature. Or is it? I can't speak for anyone else... I never check traffic numbers. I either go to places that just look interesting or places others have recommended. Eventually I think people build friendships and relationships and tend to hang out in the same areas as those people. 4) Do most adopt an actual SL persona that is seperate from their RL and RP accordingly? I yam who I yam and thats all that I yam. ![]() 5) What's the most embarrasing thing you've ever done as a newbie? In a dance club during a naked dancing contest I let my curiosity control my clicker and I snuck a click on someone's prim penis just to see what would happen, thinking there was no way they could know it was me. What I didn't realize though was that the reason it was already pointing straight up was that someone else had been clicking it (probably the girl he was dancing near) and so my click just happened to be the majic number..... in chat for everyone to see in nice bright spam.... "Allana Dion makes me cum" or something like that, I dont remember the actuall words just my name and cum and i'm sure his dancing partner thinking "wt hell??" As I quickly tped my mortified ass out of there. |

Depending on the intent of the user this can be classed as internet terrorism, also something about hacking/interferring with a buisness (SL is losing out big time during this)... It's a pain in the ass. It's probably illegal. It's expensive for LL. It's rude and wrong and stupid, but it's not terrorism. Terrorism is the use of terror to advance one's agenda. No terror here. Probably no real agenda either. |

You basically made my point for me, unless YOU know the "intent" of the attack then really you cannot say it isn't a form of terrorism. For some SecondLife is thier form of therapy an to not have that access again "for some" may indeed invoke a sense of terror, an as to the agenda be it to just mess around or to shutdown the Grid there was still some agenda behind the intent of makin this script. I won't even get into the idea of financail terrorism as it is costing both LL an citizens money, this alone should be obvious. I just want back in an really could care less about this whole damn incident, just that it gets handled which in some manner it already is. I'm just happy I didn't have a shift tonight or I'd really be pissed as I'm one of the people whom is leaning on SL buisness oppurtunities to fund my 1stLife...

Just curious... Is there a group of "white-hat hackers" in SL? If not, it might be worthwhile for a bunch of SL scripters to get together - with LL's blessing, of course - and try to take out the preview grid any way they can in the weeks before a release.
In the software world, most security flaws are found by people who enjoy hacking but don't actually want to cause any grief. Seems like SL could benefit from that kind of community input. |
