nope, not working for me, i'm guessing that its the server i'm on...

i'll just have to wait it off which sucks because I have nothing else to do, although I could always go on MSN for awhile

I did. SL is down. What part of "down for update" don't you get? 7am-12pm PST (also SLT). 5 hour span. Usally 3-4 though.

Dude, you are a true and good friend, and I love you like the brother that my mom claims she never had, but you are in fact acting like a flaming douche on white toast with a side order of dickknob salsa..maybe you should reconsider this course of action and we go find something else to do.

It'll be done at 12pm SLT.

Breathe. It's not confusing.

Tie an ace bandage around your head so it doesn't explode just yet, and ponder the following:
  1. The grid gets closed until roughly noon SLT every Wednesday.

  2. When the grid is closed, you can't log into Second Life.

  3. This update, just like all previous updates, was announced ahead of time, and the announcement clearly stated that "Second Life will be unavailable from 7am to 12pm PDT/SLT".

  4. Announcements are pretty easy to spot, since they all appear in the Announcements Forum.

  5. SLT (Second Life Time) is the same as Pacific Time. So, if you live in Washington, Oregon, California, or Navada, the above means noon where you are. If you are in Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, Utah, Coloroado, Arizona, or in the Western parts of the Dakotas, Nebraska, or Kansas, that means 1:00 p.m. where you are. If you're in the Eastern parts of the Dakotas, Nebraska, or Kansas, or if youre in Oklahoma, Texas, Minesota, Iowa, Missouri, Arkansas, Lousiana, Wisconsin, Illinois, Mississippi, Alabama, or the Western parts of Michigan, Indiana, Kentucky, Tennessee, or Florida, that means 2:00 p.m. where you are. If you're anywhere else in the continental US, that means 3:00 p.m. where you are. If you're in Alaska, that's 11:00 a.m. If you're in Hawaii, 9:00 a.m. If you're elsewhere in the world, you can do the math yourself. If you're on another planet, or in any type of spacecraft, consult with the nearest android, friendly brainy alien, or ship's computer.

  6. Any discussion of "I can't log in" during scheduled down time is a complete waste of time (but since I'm not otherwise engaged right now, this one's been fun).

Still confused?

Most of us who frequent these forums can figure the update process out: during the update window, attempting to update and log in will fail. However, with the regularity of updates it seems to me that the client and server should have a better mechanism for communicating about the update process. And the number of people who post in the forums asking what is going on suggests that many people do not actually understand what is happening when they encounter the in-progress update.

The current mechanism for notifying users who *don't* read these forums is pretty poor. What should probably happen is this- when you attempt to connect during an update window, you should get a message saying something like "An update is currently in progress. Please come back at <end of update window> and try again." The game should *not* download an outdated update. It should *not* attempt to log in to the currently-down grid. It should *not* produce confusing error messages.

Until this is the case, confused users will continue to show up here in the forums thinking they have encountered some new and amazing error, when in fact all they have done is bump up against the weekly upgrade.

You're absoluely right, and usually the type of message you're suggesting is what we get. It usually says something to the effect of "Second Life is currently closed for maintenance. For more information check the Announcments Forum". For whatever reason, this week, it's saying something else, which is somewhat unfortunate.

I can certainly understand new people, or even old people who don't read the forums, being confused by that, but what I can't understand is why after the answer has been given and given and given to them, do certain people insist on still thinking they should be able to log in right now.

I'm probably just not watching closely enough, but my theory has been that it is someone different asking the question each time.

Sort of like the help desk support person's frustration: the support person has heard the same question and given the same answer 300 times. To the help desk person, the 301st person asking the question must be ignorant. The reality is, the 301st person thinks their problem is unique, since it's the only time its happened to *them*.

Now....if it's the exact same person asking the question over and over again- they are either ignorant/forgetful, mentally deficient, or a troll.

Correction: If you are in Arizona and *not* on land belonging to the Indian Nations, you are currently the same time as SL and that means 12:00pm. Please be advised that Arizona, save the Indian Nation, does not play G-d with time twice a year and are therefore *always* MST and *never* MDT. Thank you.

Hehe, I was wondering about that, actually. I attended a conference in Scottsdale once, and I discovered that Arizona does not do the daylight saving/standard thingie, but I didn't remember which one they stuck with all year. The map I was looking at when I wrote that post had Arizona listed simply as "Mountain Time", along with all those other states, so I went with that. I see now looking at a more acurate map that Hawaii also does not observe daylight saving time, so I guess my calculation for them was off too. Oh well.

Well, I guess to be fair, looking back over the thread, it's really just one person who doesn't seem to get it. It did feel like more though, so thanks for the head-straightening on that.

There have been others who posted the same question after the answer was given to the first guy, but I guess it's safe to assume that those people simply jumped on the bandwagon of the thread's title without actually reading the replies.

Well, the same guy apparently thinks the word "life" starts with a C, so who knows?
