Yes definitely if the prims would only remain fixed or at least a much smoother transition
it would be much easier to predict what you will get once you rez it inside SL.

However the potential is truly remarkable, the wings exporter is pretty limited however
it is awesome that we have it, as it is quick and easy. It would be great if it was not veritices
number dependent.

The sculpy bitmap formap essentially requires something to create a mesh like the ones the current Wings exporter can deal with. I was able to write the current exporter relatively quickly by only allowing the user to start with (and maintain) an appropriate mesh. The ideal exporter would be able to take any 3D object and algorthmically creates the mesh points, assigning more vertices where the surface changes sharply and fewer where it is close to flat. I don't have the time or skill set for that.

On the other hand, I have picked up enough Erlang (the language that Wings 3D plugins are written in) that if someone else knows enough about the algorithms needed, we might be able to collaborate to produce one.

I made one I made one!!! YAY!! Thank you for all the help at least i have a basic understanding now. Wings is very easy to understand maybe will help in learning Blender.

My questions are similar to above... how to smooth out the shape? Instead of selecting a face could you go by an intersect point or an edge and "smooth" it... or will that result in an error? Guess I'll have to play with it more.

Now i have to tackle how to transfer into .obj for Blender so i can color it :p

Great forum btw.... some really helpful information! Thank you
Jade

In case you haven't discovered it yet, enable advanced menus. (Edit/Preferences/Advanced/Advanced Menus) That will give you access to "magnets" which are useful for moving vertices in a "stretchy" way. And start with at least a 32x31 sphere, if not a 64x63 one.

Well, I downloaded wings, and the sculpy widget from the first page, but...

well..

*hides under a n00b blanket* I can't even find the import_export folder thing to put the widget into! I have searched EVERYWHERE, even did a search for one of the other export file names to see if it existed..

And I got nothing. Help?

Thanks for the help getting the plugin working!
Now I have exported my first sculpty and intitally was very plesed with the result, however, once I looked at it more closely, I realised that it is inside out. I can only see the inside surface, is there any way to fix this please?
Thanks,

They've just changed the way the sculpties work.

Try flipping the bitmap horizontally and importing it again.

I don't get it

I make things, Plug in the numbers as given and out side of the basic sphere.
Same thing "Exporter Crash" I know there is something very basic I am missing
Any advice from the experts?

Does the exporter need any updates since they changed it on the beta (see the Blog)?

The sculpt texture I created prior to this update is working fine... though my original object has resized itself a little.

So... no problems yet.
Then again, I made a symmetrical object (a wineglass).

That's what I made copied it step by step from the Wings Tutorial page. Pretty slick I say so for myself Then comes getting it out of the Wings and crap. I will look for the update.

oh, you *can't* use the tutorial... it requires you use more than one object, or start with a cylindar.
The exporter only works if you start with a sphere, and don't add or delete any of the vertices. (at least that's my understanding).

So I had to create a wine glass from a sphere.
Really, when you get into it, you can pull any shape from a 64/63 sphere.

You start with a sphere, cut it in two, move the top to botton and bridge the two for a stem.
Tried the 64/63 meathod. Same results. I scaled back to just making dents, cuts and dimples in the sphere. Same thing.

You'll need the new exporter for the 1.16.0.1 SL version. I've updated the attachment in the initial post of this thread.

Don't cut the sphere. Only move vertices around. Any cuts, extrusions, bridges, etc. will change the vertex order.

Thanks, I made one and it got it uploaded. I swear it looks transparent, You can't see the surface looking straight on but you can see inside wall on the other side.

Thanks for the help everyone

You need to flip the texture horizontally since new beta release.

just download the new plugin on the original post if you're having flipped normal issues :)

I have been playing with this plugin for the last few hours and its sweet! the nice thing also is - if you make the obj in wings - you can export it to other 3d programs that you're more familiar with, and just reimport it back to Wings as an obj file.

As long as you don't cut the mesh or subdivide it, etc - works great. I've been working on it in Silo and using Wings as an exporter and I am very pleased. I haven't tried Zbrush yet - it has an issue where it flips the uvmaps, may not matter with this exporter, but I will test that program later to be sure. edit - zbrush works as a deforming program for Wings-generated spheres destined to become a sculpty - flying colors.

This is the result of my Silo+Wings work.

WOOHOO DIDDLY HOO!

I just tested it with ZBrush and it works great!. I had previously tried importing a model from ZBrush to Wings and the plugin failed miserably. But using your method of exporting a mesh from Wings to ZBrush, and then back again, works real good!

Cheers! :)

I can say with all sincerity that Erlang has some of the worst documentation ever. It's the bastard child of Perl and Lisp.

I've been pounding on the source for a couple days now, I've managed to make a new shape that doesn't have square polygons (meaning you can have proper sculpt objects now).

Some time later today I'll have finished an importer (and it will support up sizing).

I can't for the life of me get Wings to give me a useable UVMap on my .obj export for use in Deep Paint 3D?

Does anyone have a clue?

Awesome work. I've just played around with a few shapes - very fun, especially with the huge prims - I took a 40x40x40 meter sphere, and bam, sculptie. :)

Is there anything that can be used with Wings 3-D to paint other than Blender that's free? Or maybe the best bet is to go Wings for creating the shape, Blender to paint / bake textures, then to SL?

I'm a rookie at this, and enjoying all the tips/tricks. Thanks!
