I am looking to make an application, which I eventually hope to become an applet (whenever Windows Vista finally gets here) that can sit on the desktop and give me the same "Friends Online" list that appears on the Second Life website.
I cannot find any documentation on how to interface from Second Life to the "outside" world, at least not for this purpose.
Where can I get this information?
This is probably the wrong forum for this, but I didn't think it would really fall under scripting as it is not "in world" scripting.

I heard a little while ago about Residents who made widgets like this for the Dashboard in OS X. Have a look at these threads started by Prester Joffre and Ali Maltz: While it's a different platform, some of the principles are the same. I'll move your query to Scripting Tips where hopefully it can be discussed further. I don't know of an official documentation pack to do this, but looks like Resident ingenuity has struck again! Best of hope.

Wow, this is something that I've been waiting for. I'm glad somebody made one for Windows. Glad this thread came out.

Try konfabulator!

If you use Konfabulator/Yahoo Widgets you don't need to wait for Vista and your widgets will run on Mac OS X or Windows already. Right now I have Gorgy Clock running on both my Mac and Windows desktops, in the same spot, so when I switch between them with my KVM switch it doesn't move. It's really a freaky-cool effect. As an added bonus, because they don't use HTML the Konfabulator widgets are MUCH less CPU-intensive than Dashboard widgets (which is another reason I don't want to see HTML on a prim) and don't need to hide in the Dashboard (though they have a dashboard-equivalent they call a Heads Up Display ).

Thanks Frans for giving a shout out. Unfortunately many new SL projects put the further development of this on the back burner. Not to mention I got stuck on 2 issues that would vastly improve the tool. If there are any VB 2005 developers out there that are interested in helping out...

I have been a programmer for 30+ years, and have been working with VB since version 1.
I have not been able to get much into the new .Net stuff, but I am an MSDN member and I do have VB2005.
I am always looking to learn something new, and add to my available skills.
I would be very interested in having a look at what you have, both as a learning experience and to help out.
Perhaps even a conversion to Konfabulator (aka Yahoo! Widget Engine) would not be out of the question.

For Raphael Rutherford - would you be interested in posting or allowing a look at your source code. Slfo.exe does not appear to be written in .Net, with all of that processor and memory overhead.
I am still interested in making a widget for the Yahoo Widget Engine.

Llauren: Sorry, it's a windows only app. However, it's pretty sinple and the parsing of the online firends is now much easier using the iframe version of the friends list, that Cornelius Linden tipped me about : http://secondlife.com/community/friends-iframe.php Craig: I will not publish the code at the moment, but have no problem explaning what was done. The code is written in MFC/C++. I found .NET to be way to complicated and bloated for this. I use CInternetSession and GetHttpConnection to fetch the friends page and parse it by simply loooking at the <td> and </td> tags. Coloring and text effects are set by comparing to the last list fetched and matching against the match list. I have made a new version that uses XML-RPC to communicate with an object in-world to get all sim stats and the visitors on your land. It can also do a regular sensor scan, and you can talk to/listen to people within chat range. You can also send IM's to any resident. And a lot more is possible, limited only (well, mostly) by the imagination.

Updated SLFO to version 1.3.0.1 to fix a few minor bugs. New version is available here .
