Has anyone else thought of the idea of having an Instant Messenger for people who are not currently logged into SL to be able to talk with their friends that are logged into game??? I have htought of this from another game I play, Everquest, this game does have EQIM to where I can chat with friends and groups that are logged in while I am unable to be logged in. If I hear sufficient feedback, I may propose a vote for someone to look into this option. I would look into if I knew enough about computer programs. :)

LL has promised (or at least said) that they are working on this. They intend to switch the sl IM protocol to use Jabber, so any Jabber compatible client should work. Hopefully that will happen some day.

I now have a working prototype instant messenger.

Right now, it lets you search for an on-line member and send a message. It does not yet have a friends list or notify you when your friends log in.. but it DOES let you IM people in world without having to be logged in with the SL client.

in the spirit of community-mindedness, I will be offering this free from my web site (once it's closer to ready).

libsecondlife-cs has the ability to IM people, but AFAIK no friends list request.

Friends list is kind of strange, because what defines a friends list? Calling cards inside the Calling Cards folder? Calling cards found anywhere in the inventory? Then you deal with issues like duplicate cards, cancelled cards, etc. Having said that, friends list support (with online/offline status) is partially implemented, maybe about a week out before everything is hammered down solid.
