Hey, Vincent, Hi......I think it's fine that you feel your scene to be realistic, but just because you think it is, does not make it so. Everything in virtual reality is gong to be a testing ground, and we have to go with the flow and ask the right questions, not point fingers.

As to your prediction regarding SL's survival? If you are trying to be realistic or even serious, survival is not your call to make, certainly not to etch in stone. (Besides, I'm the psychic around here! :)

Seriously, criticizing Linden Labs for doing something you don't agree with, does not mean they are "profiting." And so what if they do? We are grown ups(most of us ;) and we can open discussions on that without pointing fingers. If it were not for Linden Labs, you would have no Second Life to be so "realistic" about. A little gratitude goes a long way.

You make good points regarding USD but your points get lost amid your insinuations.
God bless, Monica

From: Vincent Nacon
Is it ok to be realistic now?

Because SL won't survive that much longer in 2009 due to lack of support in Second Life's Marketing ground.

Placing a deadline on January and then announce it on April? Why 4 months?
Are you hoping people would forget and then maybe use their ideas into your profit for Second Life and Linden Lab alone?

Did M Linden and Philip Linden ran out of ideas?

Of course, I may be asking "Prokofy Neva" type of questions, but can we be realistic and serious for now?

Why award it in Linden$? Whoever may win would just exchange it for USD... but that would take a long while to process it because of your LindeX rate limit. By the time it's over, the value of Linden$ would drop dramatically. Thus, making that 10,000 USD much less than it should be.

Focus on the marketing ground, otherwise it's just a waste of time.

This, hot on the heels of the OS *? Your timing is incredibly poor.

So um... where are people supposed to build this prize contender and how is it to be paid for over the next few months?

Oh wait, and you raised prices so insanely to pay for this "prize"?

Yes, I'm a pretty malcontented kitty and I don't normally let myself get like this. I'm just stunned.

So stunned I cannot even form a complete thought.

Wow.

*points above* Me too. Your timing is unbelievably bad no matter how long this has been in the pipes and unfortunately will take away from what is probably not a bad thing. No one is really going appreciate this now when the general morale of the residents is at such a low.

I mean WOW x 2. Just friggin wow.

If I were to nominate a charitable project/institution for this award, it might be Partners for Others (a RL Canadian charity). They have been partnering with lots of SL groups on specific short-term projects for small development projects in Africa.

PfO was just involved with a monthlong project, a Halloween-themed sim "Caer Blanco", selling goods donated by premier SL creators. The beneficiary was a new clinic in Lesotho. My friend and I bought some plants and dropped $L$5000 in the donation box; this is probably typical and not much in RL terms. But, a month of such activity would help a single clinic quite a bit.

PfO was also involved in the 2006 "Gardens of Hope" project. From the Caer Blanco notecard: This project linked five communites in Lesotho through the construction and maintenance of tree nurseries, gardens and greenhouses. [Aside: one issue with fundraising in SL is that donations are micropayments - RFL may succeed in raising significant funds, but it is with an incredible amount of effort. Fundraising small amounts for specific small projects, though, seems very appropriate to SL.]

Partners for Others in partnership with SOLID and with the fabulous support of SL business owners, reporters, land owners, builders, event planners and, most importantly, SL citizens we have been able to raise, what may seem to some of us small, funds that have a significant and life changing impact on small communities in Africa. Many of these people that we help don't even know what a computer is, let alone a virtual world but yet that virtual world has impacted their lives in a positive way. Thank you to every one that supported our most recent fundraiser at "Caer Blanco" over the Hallowe'en celebrations.

Our build at Better World Island is our effort to keep our Second Life supporters up to date on the progress at the projects in Africa. Please tp by for a visit. We are considering throwing our Basotho hat in to the ring for this challenge.

On a more personal note, thank you Nika for your nomination ; ) donation and support. You are a virtual, and real life, hero. Bottom up trumps top down even in a virtual world.

Be well,

Folks, just to throw out something here:

You want to hold a contest. Fine. You can easily afford a $10,000 prize, go for it.

I'm not interested. Apparently, neither are a whole bunch of other people.

Reality check: when you announce a $10,000 prize contest and instead of kudos and enthusiasm... by and large you get a bunch of taunting, negative messages in response, that might be a clue the company is doing something wrong.

Just a heads up.

While I have a great idea that utilizes SL in a business environment, and I can demo it in a couple of months if I wish, I will not breathe a word of it outside of my Dev circle and most trusted friends. Had this happened a few weeks ago, I'd be rushing to get the demo running and shoot for the kudos, as I'm a bit of a show off. But I am also practical, and I cannot deal in good faith with a company that doesn't do the same with me.

Do your own homework, if you insist on taking my lunchmoney.

Yvw for the nomination, but I will pass the hero moniker on to my partner, Cee Edman, whose generosity moved much more quickly than I. Typically, I was still standing around going "ooo shiny!" when I saw the donation box thank him.

Personally I think you would get much better results if you tripled that 10K and hired a social director. You need to look at the individual demographics and come up with compelling reasons to get them in SL.

Ok, example. Older folks, lots are single and don't have much social life. SL is the perfect environment as there are social venues in SL like the Blue Note that play music that would really appeal to this group.

Singles, look at all the match maker sites, where can SL compete in this?

Just about every demographic can be targeted in some way but you need someone to do it. I mean really, do you really think some build in SL is going to change anything? You need connections with the outside world to bring them into SL.

The only build I can think of happened several years ago that I did for the CBC that was featured in a program about SL coast to coast across Canada. I had quite a few people tell me that brought them into SL. But this was not initiated by me, I just volunteered some time.

To bring real influx into SL you need a dedicated full time person who will work on inroads to target demographic groups.

Cool idea there Lindens but um, you guys just don't seem to have the math skills one would expect from computer people. Or perhaps you do and think everybody else is a dolt.

10,000 USD buys 2621114 worth of lindens at todays exchange rate (according to the buy page https://secure-web12.secondlife.com/currency/buy.php)

NOW

Sell 2621114 lindens and you get back US$9,265.12 (according to the sell page https://secure-web12.secondlife.com/currency/sell.php)

So, dear future contest winner, kiss $733 goodbye if you plan to take your winnings out world - or EVEN if you just wanna pay your tier on your soon to be overpriced OpenSpace sims. AND you are limited on how quickly you can pull it out anyways.

/me scoffs and wanders away shaking head in sad disgust. Color me UNIMPRESSED.
Don`t forget, you will need to pay taxes on that.

To be fair, it was announced at SL5B by Mitch Kapor after he asked all the marginal and dispossessed misfits who built SL to move over and make room for the *real* users.
Whether it is a deliberate, tactical move to dust it off now is the question.

So another couple of grand off the top, that I bet my accountant can figure out how to get back. That's still around $6-7K in found money. I'll take it.

I'm guessing you haven't read the rest of the thread as it has been said quite a few times before this was mentioned well before that at least originally so in all fairness it can't really be considered a PR stunt, that being said it's interesting timing.

Maybe it should have been a ten thousand dollar "Hottest Av" or "Best in Black" contest.

Mostly I was commenting on the stupidity of forcing the winner to take Lindens rather than USD. Also consider the timeline, entries in January and decisions in APRIL???? I suppose that is one way to get people to hold on to their OS sims until next year, or to try to suck some people back in. But come on, something stinks here! Don't you smell it????

It really irks me that they bring this up now when the OpenSpace issue is so hot. More switch and bait IMO. Chances are this whole idea was thought up by a different department but the timing... bagh.

The Linden Prize was announced back in July, it's open for nominations now.

"Please keep this thread on topic and constructive."

I hope my silly comment was not what motivated that.

I nominate Anshe Chung, whose successful business started in Second Life provides real world employment opportunities to a number of people who've found them better choices than their alternatives.

I do wonder if the idea of the contest is that the improvement in the way people work, learn, and communicate in their daily lives outside of the virtual world is supposed to be due to the characteristics that distinguish SL from other online gathering places - 3D, easy in-world building tools, simple but powerful scripting of objects, micro-economy, simulated body language, one grid - as distinct from effects that could have been achieved by people using 2D interfaces, like facebook or IM clients, posting your pictures at art chat rooms, etc.

Couple of REAL Questions
11-13-2008 14:11
Hello Everett, how are you doing?

1) Submission deadline is January 15, 2009; and winner announcement is "No later than April 30, 2009". does it means, if my project envolves a complex build, I need to have it all done and built and set up by January 15? Or after application submission, I can keep working on it?

2) I saw no mention about this... Is LL going to set to public a list of applications and slurls? i.e., a list somewhere of slurls of people's projects, for everyone go there see (steal, copybot, rip textures, get "inspiration" etc)? Or will it be a private information only available for Lindens?

3) Does it have to be an active project... or can it be a "ready to go" project? For exemple, just as exemple... Lets say, someone builds marketplace, with stalls, signs, rental boxes, roads, etc... but without real merchandise neither people renting them - thats an exemple of a "ready-to-go" build, but not "active", since its not active with people using it. Can the project be a ready-to-go? (for everyone reading, I know a marketplace isnt in the theme - Im sure Ev understood its for exemple purposes).

Thank you!

Compelling results in real life is a hard challenge in this time. I doesnt know what it means. Could it be a rollplay, a marketing platform, a dating service or a scientific project? All of this producing real life results, but it is hard to planning, creating and promoting this in only 60 days.

May the challenge begin and the best win the pot. Im out now to phoning with my old mentors. ^^

Michaela:
Projects can include a variety of things, as you noted. Because Residents have such a wide scope of creativity, we expect many different types of applications.

In this first year, it is more likely that completed or ongoing projects will be able to meet the standard of getting tangible results. That said, I want to encourage you to go for it! If not this year, think about next. We're going to do this every year so its not to early to start thinking, designing and executing.

Make it a prerequisite of being awarded the prize. The idea is to showcase the integration of SL and RL. I would be interested in every project that entered and hope we can find them all listed.

We'll think about film for next year. This year, we'll only be making public the finalists and the winner, and we anticipate that we'll share how many applications we've received.

We'll leave it to the applicants' discretion if they want to make public that they've entered their work.

Katrina, I don't know if you've looked at NonProfit Commons in SL, but folks there might be able to help get you started.

From the Caer Blanco notecard:[Aside: one issue with fundraising in SL is that donations are micropayments - RFL may succeed in raising significant funds, but it is with an incredible amount of effort. Fundraising small amounts for specific small projects, though, seems very appropriate to SL.]

Here's a related idea for LL: LL is large enough now to do outreach to a targeted set of RL businesses. Taking the idea of "micropayments for microprojects" to Oxfam (which specializes in small development projects with concrete outcomes), and facilitating their setting up a process to quickly create short, targeted projects like Caer Blanco, would probably be a good bet for LL. With the creative use of bots and prototype sim builds for Africa and India, Oxfam would be off and running. LL would get fabulous press, and could request that Oxfam in return give LL opportunities to reach out to specific Oxfam corporate partners, augmenting efforts to bring those businesses to SL.

That's the last free idea LL is getting from me, lol! RL is calling ...
:)

Those are great ideas and I'm a big fan of the NPC community.

As far as micropayment idea--great idea, but why wait for us? Go make it happen! :-)
