Vote here with what you plan on doing. I personally am never buying mainland property and on the fence of quitting SL entirely.

You need another poll option for people who are private island owners but have never owned an OpenSpace. I voted "I was not effected by this" because my price stays the same...

HOWEVER, if they *ever* (and I mean ever) hike private island prices, I will immediately shut off all of my personal spending into SL, including land and premium and buying L$. If it gets to that point, I may stay around just for nostalgic purposes, going around talking to friends and trying to see which places are still left in the aftermath....

But for now, I'm going to cautiously proceed with my current investments in private islands. I was once ambitiously thinking of growing my virtual assets. But now, I have no plans to expand my holdings at all, in light of this change.

I won't be spending or buying any L$ for the foreseeable future, I am disgusted at this decision and unless it is revoked/changed/compromise found I will not be putting any more money in to SL in any shape or form. It will become a chat room for my free account and nothing more.

Raising the tier on the Full Sims would be a separate issue entirely.

i dunno..i was using an open space for an art project, and this makes the project entirely unaffordable. I'm looking into alternative solution..but i just, as an artist, cannot afford a full space sim...so this really messes up the all over scope of what i was doing.

I do not see the solution above that I am likely to be doing...

Converting my open space regions to full prim regions. I just hope that LL will give us a pass on the $100usd conversion charge.

OK, don't start talking about raising the tier for full sims, that's not what this discussion is about

Maybe forced out of SL with this 67% increase
10-28-2008 18:19
Wonder if the Lindens have made their pile and are delibrately, perhaps, opting out of SL?? This is killing the goose that has laid the golden egg.The tier increase will force both owners and renters out of SL, because with both owners and renters having to shell out 67% more, people will buy less. And some sims have closed already, two months ahead of this tier increase. Most sim owners aren't in in for the money and even those that are will have to increase their fees and costs of created items to make the new tier.

And just as the economy in RL is tanking, SL powers that be have elected to drive all of us out by making it unaffordable, to enjoy, buy, create, etc an escape for many and self-create a myriad of worlds impossible in RL.

And no real reason why the 67% increase is necessary. Will SL have improved access and speed so more people can enjoy SL? It would make more sense to increase monthly membership fees than tier payments.

Hey Lindens, please give us the straight and true reason why the sudden and huge tier increases. You are going the lose the majority of your paying customers with this increase!!

But will never [pay a cent more than what I pay tiers now .. I would rather quit and go some somewhere else .. Man money id so tight around the world .. the Lindens must be mental to increase rents/rates like this .. have they lost the plot ???
Most companies in New Zealand are having huge sales ... not increases ..

I wonder what the land statistics will be after this is all said & done. I bet the metrics for SL will be interesting.

Huge $$$ Grab!
10-28-2008 18:51
You will NEVER convince me this huge increase isn't a conspiracy. I believe the Lindens knew exactly where this was going when they started selling off thousands of open space sims back in March of this year! We might look like empty-headed avatars but I assure you, we are not. There is NO doubt in my mind people will walk away from their OS sims rather than fork out more real world dollars for their virtual land. I think it is grossly unfair to current land owners... it should at least be grandfathered. I firmly believe the Lindens had better reconvene in the boardroom and seriously reconsider...

Thank God!!!!!

I was going to buy an Island yesterday, well later today, for myself and a friend to live on, it was beautifull, two atolls and a main Island, we planned to have a dolphin or two, a house and a studio on each atol, then just see in the sunset each evening.... lovely.
BUT.... all gone.
Wont even be buying ANY land now... not even on themainland.... this has frightened me off untill I see the results of this and what will ACTUALLY happen after January.
This is what is happening right now in RL... people are STOPPING buying, they are NOT investing anymore and the banks and Societies are closing their doors in fear of run on banks.
I have to say the ingredients are HERE right now on SL for this to happen, it is clear.... not even a thought, that this is happening right now..... look at my situation.
I am happy to stay in my little villa on the mainland costing nothing having bought it outright. My frined and I have decided to stay put.
There will be no purchasing or renting land..... BUT... can I state that there is another drawback.... have the people at LL done their research intom the fall out of this..... in all the hundreds of ciomments in the BLOGS and on the forums I havent see any commwent on ...... shopping reduction!!!!!!
If you live on the island you will need a beach house, furniture, pose balls, aquatic creatures, boats, animations etc etc ...... when they add up per person and not forgetting moving to a new place... who doesnt want to start a new......
What are you doing to yourseklves LL, I cant beleive... having been in business for myself for so long, and even owning a webhosting company myself, that you are still acting like kiddies in an Internet company while your bubble is about to burst around you...
If YOU cant dom it.... get inn a business expert RIGHT NOW to show you how.
You are in trouble guys RIGHT NOW... you have started the ball rolling ...backwards and by January, I wouldnt even bother putting the prices up... there will be no one around.

Good luck... you will need it.

I rent from a private individual who owns full sims so at this time I'm not affected. But if my landlord owns any OS, I might catch a trickle down...hope not.

What I don't understand is why LL would bend everyone over like this. They were in such a sweet spot! The economy is on a downward spiral, people are staying home and finding cheaper entertainment. SL is perfect! People are willing to keep their internet and sit on their couches and play here while the economy recovers, but instead of embracing the sheep, it's become a slaughter...a culling! That's insane and I just don't get it.

Openspaces

I think that the Linden's are shooting themselves in the foot.

Increasing tier, taking away non-profit discounts.....hmmm, sounds like SL will be only for the rich & corporate now. I will keep my free account, just to see what the outcome of all of this is, but I will not spend another dime in SL. I have rented homes & shops, made numerous purchases and enjoyed escaping & creating in-world with friends. It is a pity that so much of that will soon be gone, as most people will be unable to afford land anymore.

I had thought of upgrading so I could buy land of my own ~ man, am I glad I didn't!!

In the end, I think this will prove to be a HUGE mistake. Many people are upset, becoming "homeless", and are losing creations that they put their hearts & souls into. I thought SL was to promote a virtual community for everyone to come together & create. Apparently it is on it's way to becoming a corporate playground or, just maybe, a giant waste of time.

Also needed: "owned" an OS (with an Estate-Owning Pal), owned mainland...will abandon OS, retreat to mainland, attempt to sell to get down to free 512. Oh, and feel bitter for spending hours of my life, and real US$ out of my own pocket, trying to make a pretty FREE place for residents to visit and enjoy. Thanks LL.

I vote staying and paying....for now !!!

But the added cost will be be supplemented by less donations to clubs, favorite places and etc.......Those people will end up loosing money (and if enough people do as I will) which in turn may or may not cause them to close their full Sim

Another option needed - we have a full and 8 OS (full in the middle surrounded by the 8 for scenery) . We will be dumping 3 or 4 OS to cover the increase in tiers but not dumping completely.

This will blow over and people who have dumped their OS sims or stopped renting them will do something else - rent Mainland or a 1/4 full region instead.

New people are joining SL every day - you only have to look at the economy stats to see how successful SL is.

I'm not saying that the price increase was handled well; just that leaving SL over this is like biting off your nose to spite your face.
There is no other platform like SL and it's much more than just a collection of OS sims.

LL will survive, and if you look around at all the businesses that are failing at the moment - if by doing this LL are securing their financial future, then good on them! I'm sure that 9 million residents will be pleased to know they'll still have an environment they can enjoy.
