From: Nerolus Mosienko Why can't the people that pay this insane amount of money to be a part of Second Life be allowed in before bots and non-paying members of SL? That seems only fair. Take a look at http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-11619"Logins disable should allowed Premium and Concierge accounts"

Well, I am not an IT expert but my IT guys told me that mySQL is limited and the new release has still many bugs and it shows poor performance because of inability to utilize multiple CPU cores for processing a single query.
But it is an opensourse program, which means very cheap.
As we see by now that it cannot handle the load from sl, why are you not thinking about paying more for an other database software like Oracle and make sl finaly stable and ready for grow??
Why do you invest in an own fiber network which will not solve the problem instead of invensting in a realible database program?

From: Equinox Pinion Why do you invest in an own fiber network which will not solve the problem instead of invensting in a realible database program? Like the open source PostgreSQL, which is consistently rated well for reliability and considered more professional than MySQL? It wouldn't cost them any more for the software. I don't think they're sticking to MySQL because of the price. They're sticking to it because changing ANY database system is more than just dumping the old DB as SQL and loading it again. And while I don't care for MySQL myself, and think they should have picked PostgreSQL, I wouldn't recommend making that kind of switch without a good long soul-searching... because there's no guarantee that even switching to God's own DBMS would help if the problem is an "organically grown" database.

nice to hear...

It is great to know what is going on...but I agree seems like the more online the more issues there are...and I wouldn't exactly say people are whiners...its more like when you pay money in..and sl is expensive...one expects service....this is with any product...
I have been having issues for days don't even know the number any more....at first I was patient..but no longer ..I am weary....I am paying more than 400 rl dollars a month here...and I am beginning to feel like its throwing away good money....
I love Sl ..but it seems to be more of a disappointment lately....than fun...I mean how much fun is it to not even be able to log in much less... have repeated crashes..can't move when in..can't teleport ..things do not rez...on and on..impossible to build...
Please people get it together ...I hear nothing but unhappiness here....and loads are planning to leave....
I am going to stay a bit longer....hoping things will get better soon...
Something tells me SL grid just can't handle the load.....giggle duh" erica

LL saying they are dealing with traffic has been going on for a while... http://blog.secondlife.com/2008/04/28/second-life-showcase-popular-places-and-the-future-of-traffic/Even last week, Jack Linden at his office hours said: "we're looking at the camping issue. especially the deliberate driving up of traffic" An earlier time it was said that Traffic Selling Services (people who rent out Traffic Bots) is also becoming a serious problem. I don't think that getting rid of traffic is the fair solution. I think getting rid of the Traffic Bots, the ability to game the Traffic system and banning the practice of deliberately driving up traffic is. LL seems aware of these practices, but again waits until it pours rain before fixing the roof.

How about limiting it to people who buy at least L$1000 a month? I'd rather let potential customers in, myself.

Same problem they had back in April..database overload ...they purchased bigger hardware to handle...hasn't lasted long before growth started tipping database over again. They can optimise to their hearts content..will be a short term solution..til sheer numbers overwhelm again. Methinks LL need to start looking at better software - seems MySQL has reached its upper limits.
And for those saying "ban the bots"... bots have very little impact on a database

Now the evil opensims are gone and SL is worse then ever. And now people are discussing bots and alts. Wouldn't it be better to demand that Linden do what we are paying them to do: A working program.
It seems that every time somethings is wrong in SL, its always the customers fault. In the country i live in it works like If we pay for something, we also have the right to demand something back.
Fix this now Linden Labs or sell Second Life to someone who can

JubJub, you're right about them having very little impact but one way they could make them have an either smaller impact would be to implement a flag that a client could send at login that would tell the server that they are talking to a non visual client so not to send any textures or visual data. This wouldn't be a bot flag since a lot of people connect and are active through non visual clients but this would not only reduce server work but it would also be much lower data transfer since there would no need for visual data being sent back and forth.

From: Rhaorth Antonelli Is it FJ that will be responding to these posts, or Catherine?
just wondering because Frank is the one who posted on the blog, but Catherine posted here in the forums
my grid question, is a question that I think many folks are wondering.. it is a two part question kinda...
will the traffic metric ever be removed, and if so would it make any changes on stability? (less info to keep track of)
also will bots ever be dealt with, just think, get rid of the bots and you won't have this issue with too many logins
related to the bot question, is there a way you could tell us how many accounts logged in are bots (on average?) This has been my exact thoughts and feelings for months. So many shops havin 'models' to display and bump up traffic figures, some having so many the 'lag' makes it impossible to peruse the store. I believe thousands would be offline if these were banned/removed. It really is getting beyond a joke.

How about some compensation to sooth the savage SL beasts???? This might help especially for those who have high monthly fees..etc....
Say since I haven't been able to do much there for a long time...since the new upgrade..
it would be nice to log in and find I had a free month ....paid......this would be a great start
Anyone out there??? Helloooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo................

From: Taff Nouvelle That sounds to me as if you have a problem with your video card driver software, check the manufacturers site for the latest drivers, that should cure the problem. If ypou already have the latest ones, reinstal them. Been there, done that.. even changed the videocard... nothing.. it still crashes when I play music from SL businesses and on weekends... *still puzzled*

Ban the bots?
01-19-2009 15:00
I say ban the thieves! (I know many have been banned, but I also know some that have had 3 DMCAs against them and are still going strong) at least bots are harmless- they arent going around stealing livlihoods and killing the will of the talented to create. Ban the copybotters and their alts(no one has more alts than a theif). Not to deviate from the topic at hand, just I think banning theives is just as if not more an urgent issue than banning bots which many are saying in this forum.
That aside, apparently the problem has nothing to do with number of people logged in so, as a shopowner losing sales id just really like to know if theres any idea at all when its going to be fixed?!

About time.
01-19-2009 15:00
Well it's good to see the Lab admitting it's faults, in non-corporate speak too.
We all know it's no easy job running a cutting edge, fast-growing entity, but I for one am glad to see straightforward responses about how it is being dealt with.
This sort of post does a lot more to rebuild my trust in LL than the rest of the PR nonsense has over the last few weeks.
Well done for getting back to issues of stability.

logins
01-19-2009 15:02
From: Wulfric Chevalier They used to do this, and we all bitched just the same as we do now. why is it all my friends seem to be able to log in when logins are disabled and I never can! I have a club and we pay lots of lindens for performers, will LL give a refund when our business is affected (and our bank accounts)?

From: SHOOTER Bonetto As a paying member I am starting to wonder what it is that I am getting. I see 90% of my friends online that dont pay a monthly fee and they seem to have no problem getting on line when SL crashes.
I as a paying member am off line more lately than on due to the crashing. It takes hours to log on while I sit here and see all my non paying friends continue to have access with out interuption.
So I ask what am I getting for my monthly fee? Why continue to pay it if I can get better service as a non paying customer?
As Hurly stated" Maybe it would help to stop creating new FREE accounts until the system has been upgraded to cope with the traffic". I know it does not help, but I can't afford to pay a SL account and I have problems loging in too... so I don't think that's the problem. I can see my paying/non paying friends online but me, specially on weekends. Anywho... I would be really upset too if I was paying and not being able to get in world.
