Upgrade to 1.20?
08-29-2008 09:59
I opened my RC 1.21 and its giving me an update message asking if I want to update to 1.20.15..... What's going on and why no message on the Status page? And of course, I try contacting support via live chat and get told they wont help me because it's an RC viewer.
So far, the only in-world bugs I've encountered with this Client are, when I TP into an area where people are already sitting on pose-balls. They are sitting sideways on the pose ball, if I sit on the object with them, then their Avatar corrects its position on the pose ball. |

One thing I noticed right away is that the download of this RC is much smaller than usual; I'm guessing that the built-in textures for Orientation Island (which doesn't exist any more anyway) have been omitted from the build. I think that's a good move in general for the RCs; except for Lindens and Mentors, the people running the RC viewer won't be visiting Orientation Island or Help Island, so those textures are just wasted download bandwidth and disk space.

Mirroring sculpted prims? Flipping?
08-29-2008 10:30
I read in the release notes that we could flip the sculpties horizontal/vertical, but I see no means of doing that. Nor do I see any means of mirroring sculpties along a "selected axis". We were told both of these were in the GUI, but I can't find them. I did see something mentioned that they were only viewable in the default skin and not dazzle, so I switched to default, but they still aren't there. I logged out and logged into a 1.24.3 server, and still no go. Where are these features?
Also, I'd like to STRONGLY request that SVC-2820 be looked at. Group chat moderation is great, but it isn't enough. Thanks for your time. |

Slooooooow.... But It Crashes Fast!
08-29-2008 10:57
I usually have no problems with the RC's... I can't remember when I last used the release viewer. Well I am using it now. I log in with 1.21 and my frame rate is a slideshow, go to the regular viewer and everything is normal. And yes the graphics setting are exactly the same. It helps if I kill all the visual goodies but it is STILL slower than the regular viewer with most setting at the "High" default. And I have a supported Nvidia card. And if I decide to tollerate watching a succession of still pictures, a crash is in the offing fairly soon. I have never had a viewer perform this badly for me. The bug fixes mean nothing if the viewer doesn't do the basics... like allow you to move smoothly through SL.

Remember Six, this is an RC0 after all. It's fine to report problems, but chewing the lindens out on them won't help fix them. If it gets to say . . . RC6-8, then I'd start being worried. With the first RC though, expect crashes and poor performance. They've just tossed the tablecloth over the table. They haven't swished out the wrinkles yet.

ATI Radeon X1650 pro and it's pretty slow compared to the regular viewer with all the same features turned on. And yes, I'm using the latest drivers.
I do like the "Enter Second Life," because it seems kind of cute or oddly fitting. _____________________

Gesture issues and crashes
08-29-2008 12:05
I have had some of my gestures not working correctly. The dropdown gesture menu is inverted, first of all. Most of the gestures towards the bottom do not work. They work in preview, but not using keywords or the gesture dropdown menu.
Also, I crashed for the first time in weeks....a hard crash, too. *rubs ass* |

The client is too laggy to use. I'm getting 7FPS on average, and when I was running the regular viewer, I was getting well over 20-25 FPS. Sorry Lindens, but this is a basically unusable client. And the blue text looks silly.

I have also noticed a change in the frame rate on this new version on my MacBook Pro. I just checked it against the released viewer and there is definitely more strain on the processors hardware side.
On the upside... Sculpties are rendering beautifully and consistently in this version. woot! |

Works great so far
08-29-2008 13:36
Ok, I will be the first, who only say positive things:
Changed: VWR-6328: Request for "Tools" menu to not auto-hide anymore Changed: VWR-4541: Move the Release Keys button to the World menu Great!!! Thanks for this! Finally i have my tools menu back and this f*** release key button is gone. Thanks. Changed: Improve Friendship offers to include 1 line of freeform text to allow requester to clarify their request Added: Allow inventory to be dropped onto IM windows Works! That are very nice features in my opinion. Changed: Change the nameplate on text you type in chat, from "You:" to "{Your Name}:" Very, very good! Thanks for that!! Fixed: VWR-2491: Save snapshot should save in PNG, BMP, or JPEG Was formerly saved as BMP, now it is saved as PNG, which is half the size (in kb). Great. Don't know where I can tell, which format should be used, though. Added: Add a "loading..." placeholder when Map tiles are loading on the World Map, and for snapshots in a Landmark preview Added: Add a "Loading..." texture placeholder to all instances of texture control Also added to the profile pics, which is very great. So you can see on first sight, if there is a pic or not. I learned in the past, there is a pic, if there is no "cross", but i am sure, a lot of people didn't know that. So .. nice. Didn't test much with Mono yet. Just compiled a poseball script with Mono - worked. Will make more tests in the future. Also I didn't test group chat and moderation function. To be honest, I would be glad, if group chat would work at all! Tested the viewer now about 2 hours permanently without any crash, even in crowded places. No problems with TPs. Seems to work as stable as the last 1.20 viewer. So for now: good work, thumbs up! ---------------------------------------------- My system: CPU: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 CPU T5600 @ 1.83GHz Memory: 2025 MB OS Version: Linux 2.6.24-19-generic #1 SMP Wed Aug 20 22:56:21 UTC 2008 i686 Graphics Card Vendor: NVIDIA Corporation Graphics Card: GeForce Go 7300/PCI/SSE2 OpenGL Version: 2.1.2 NVIDIA 173.14.12 |

Kudos
08-29-2008 13:49
Ok. it's an RC0 and the last one went through 20 odd iterations before it made it to prime time but guys..OMG.... Kudos on someone at LL finally listening and taking care of the small stuff.
VWR-6328: Request for "Tools" menu to not auto-hide anymore VWR-4541: Move the Release Keys button to the World menu VWR-4575: IM tabs no longer blink when new IM text is received Yay! And if: Fixed: SVC-972: Viewer is logged out during failed teleport * Also Fixed: VWR-2999 Viewer Crashes after every Teleport is really fixed then give that person a medal. It's only been broken for 2 years. You don't or haven't in the past realised that stuff like this is hugely irritating when you break or change stuff and then take months to switch it back. So whoever it was at LL who sorted through the Jira and picked up on all these "little" things and stuffed them in this release gets a huge pat on the back from all of us. Now please... let's get back to putting things on the blog where they belong. RC candidate announcements, Torley's tutorials - These are important. They are News with a capital N. They aren't grid status updates or forum posts. Some of us just don't have the time to wade through the mess so they should go back on the blog where people can see them. Good luck as you proceed with the numerous iterations of this release. I look forward to trying it when it gets to RC10 ![]() |

Thanks for noticing that Emily. It's a small bug we just hunted down. It was erroneously telling you of an update to 1.20.15. I am very sorry about that!

Yes, by eliminating some textures for Orientation which are no longer used, we were able to reduce the download size by about 14MB. We're excited for this too!

anti-aliasing for high res pics
08-29-2008 15:10
I have run a test with anti-aliasing on at 16x and off and I took pictures for both cases at high resolution (~5800x3600). I don't see any difference after blowing out both results. I could see a difference in 1.20, although I think that was causing some other problems (see VWR-7489, which I haven't seen in this RC yet, but it was there in 1.20 even if you could not reproduce it).
Is anti-aliasing turned off now by any chance? Or is it something with high res pictures? |

New features are very fine. Prim click detection functions are very usefull. I compiled also some scripts with mono and it seemed to be a little speed up. If you find out also, why viewer is crashing (also on other engines than Mac) it would be a great alteration.
Im tautly expect official release of this version. _____________________

Thats a good example, Latif. However do support this fully, it is a longer-term project that will take some re-architecting... It's a new feature that Second Life doesn't currently support (never did, unfortunately). We do, indeed, want to support multi-item transfers. This is on our roadmap and it will be a little easier after the Notifications Project. However you are right that we've made the UI slightly better by not failing "silently"== ie it was betraying the user by *not* actually transferring the other items. That was a bug, and we felt it was important to fix it, especially for a new user who doesnt know about the limitation.
Take for example the inability to give more than one inventory item at a time. The bug used to be that if you select more than one item from the inventory and drag it into a profile or an avatar, it would only transfer the last item selected, as opposed to transfer all the items as one would expect. Instead of enabling the transfer of multiple items as the JIRA issue suggest, the "fix" implemented is to disallow even to attempt the drag of multiple inventory items. Granted, this is better than silently fail, but its not a fix. This issue is collecting similar feedback- see VWR-8672. Please add yours! Another example is buggy CTRL-N (always shows beacons). This is a feature used a lot by scripted and builders in general, and its also useful when you want to find quickly that noisy object. The bug was that when you select sunset mode (CTRL-SHIFT-N) the beacons would be turned on as well. The "fix" implemented was to remove CTRL-N shortcut altogether! |

I know I'm being picky with this but, this changed that was done:
Changed: Increase the spacing slightly between Chat Console lines Needs to be either undone or a small feature added to let me remove that spacing. I'm constantly in sims with alot of people and the chat can get crazy. So I limit my lines to 10 lines on the screen. Like this my screen isn't flooded and filled with chat. With this spacing more of my screen space is being taken and I had to bring it down from 10 lines of chat to 7 lines of chat. A minor inconvience but it's still annoying in the long run. Every two or 3 lines I see from people take up too much space on my screen. Screen size is: 1024 x768 Also if I shrink the text it becomes to small. With only 3 options for text size.. I don't have much to work with. I do say though.. I absolutely love being able to change the chat color of IMs, myself and others things. So that's a big thumbs up. Now only if you could copy that colored chat into a notecard.. or better yet.. give notecards a feature that lets you color the chat. |

Angelina, can you file a bug report in the Issue Tracker and state again these reasons for why the change to spacing causes problems? This way I can track the request and submit it to our development team.
Thanks! Angelina, already created a JIRA for this one:
http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-8825 Please add your comment and vote there. Apparently this was already reverted in the nightly builds, lets hope the reversion makes it into 1.21.
