Ummm, are you saying that if we (on our PC's) run some other OS than windows (I'm using XP myself) we will get better performance (framerate) on SL ?

Does SL run a lot faster under Ubuntu (for example) on the same PC ?

Hi there Piggie
XP and Ubuntu run pretty much the same speed. But I have never figured out how to get streaming video working, must be a codec issue. and I gave up on using voice chat with Linux a long time ago

One thing I find amazing is that the new SL web page, the one that uses Flash for video, well the SL built in web browser does not support Flash. Thats really a mind trip. I wish LL would just dump Quicktime, and use Flash instead

Microsoft isn't going to suddenly say "Oh no, SL users can't stream, lets dump DirectX and Directsound immediately."
It's not just SL. Creative Labs is saying that Microsoft broke ALL hardware accelerated audio in Vista, and OpenAL is the response to that.

Unfortunate, and probably true. But I'm talking Windows XP. Streaming works under 1.21 without OpenAL, and now this latest with OpenAL breaks streaming. So, it's either OpenAL or something else LL did in the process of adding OpenAL broke streaming.

Point being, Blaming Microsoft for it isn't the right thing to do. :)

If it comes down to having it broken on XP or broken on Vista/7, what then?

XP is the largest most popular Operating system there is. You can't just break it and say 'oh well'.

Break Vista. It's terrible anyway.

(of course, making *both* work is probably best, and certainly not impossible. :) )

*moves on to the next executive decision*

I'm confused. I am running the RC8 client under XPPro, and if streaming is busted, I'm not aware of it. I can hear the parcel audio stations just fine. I was even using Voice a bit on Sunday without complication.
