I'm confused about how script memory will be handled under Mono. it has been explained to me that with Mono, a 5k script will only use 5k of memory as opposed to the full 16k under LSL. Is this correct? If so, will this effect be automatic for all old scripts or will they need to be recompiled for this to happen?
Am I misguided in the notion that this will ease a lot of the script load for high traffic regions where the majority of running scripts have been brought in by avatars?
Sorry for all the questions. I'm just trying to understand it.

Felix: you'll need to recompile scripts to use Mono, including the changed memory behavior. See https://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Mono#Mono_How-toAs for script load caused by avatar-work scripts -- possibly that will go down, if people start wearing attachments that have mono scripts on them. I.e., I wouldn't expect dramatic changes soon, it'll be more of a gradual change.

From: Damona Rau A question: i've heared that the mono-vm is bytecode compatible to the other vm, why isn't there a way to auto-port the existing scripts? I'm not sure what you mean by "bytecode compatible", but I can't think of any possible definition of "bytecode compatible" that would fit. The bytecodes are different. The actual operations performed by individual bytecodes are different. The order of evaluation of stack arguments is even different. The source code is the same, and the resulting operations are almost the same, and the run-time library is the same (it's the sim itself, really), but everything in between is different. The two implementations of LSL are *source* compatible, to a high degree, but it's not quite perfect, and it wouldn't be wise to just automatically recompile everything.

Testing Mono on the Main (Agni) Grid
08-23-2008 17:39
Thanks to Tateru Nino for this terrific piece of news: - Download the Preview Grid Viewer from http://secondlife.com/support/downloads.php and select the one for your platform - Launch it and patiently wait for everything to load (e.g. Torley's images of SL showing up, as well as all the info panels) - Press Ctrl-Shift-G (works under Windows and Mac) You'll have now a new dropdown allowing you to select any of the available Linden grids (it appears at the bottom, just to the right of the "Quit" button). Select "Agni" (Main Grid). Now log in normally. Although this is the Preview SL client, it will allow you to connect to the Main grid without problem, and you can enjoy the power of compiling to Mono and use the llDetectTouch() functions on any Linden Sandbox (which are all Mono-enabled) very easily, or on any of the lucky sim owners that already have the Mono server on their sims. It works wonderfully Naturally, none of these will work on the remaining 24,500 non-Mono sims, but at least you can create your things directly on the Main Grid. A question to Prospero: I imagine that there is no way for a sim owner to kindly request that their sims get upgraded, right?... I guess we'll have to patiently wait until Wednesday...

I use the Preview viewer, intending to log in to Agni. I log in. To Aditi. I say "Where the heck am I?" . I notice the red bar at top. I log out. I log back in, intending to log in to Agni. I log in. To Aditi again, darn it to heck!
I repeat this numerous times a day.
Having my memory and presence of mind sucks.
It would be nice if it would remember your last choice of grids.
I suppose I should whip up a shortcut.
When is Cayuga gonna get Mono-fied?

From: Thorvald Larsen I crashed today, and can't log back in. The system apparently thinks I'm still online. I keep getting the following error:
Login failed. The system is logging you out right now. Your Account will not be available until 2008-08-21 14:35:50 Pacific Time.
except whenever I wait for the appointed time, it just adds about 5 minutes and won't let me in. Will the rolling restart actually log me out? 'lo, thats a bit off topic, right? but anyway. try to contact support or region owner. a region restart should solve this problem. it's bad to hear that this still exist... tx Oh

From: Thorvald Larsen I crashed today, and can't log back in. The system apparently thinks I'm still online. I keep getting the following error: I find that the best way to get around this bug is to log in with another account and send yourself an IM. That seems to wake the system up to the fact that you're not actually logged in. It's only failed me once, when I crashed on a region corner crossing and each region apparently thought I was in the region next door... completely baffled the Linden who came to help, because restarting the region I was "in" did nothing... and I think they ended up bouncing all four of them. But that was years ago.

TP Home and ended up in a large Avi pile!!!!!
08-25-2008 08:11
What was going on last night? I tried to tp home and ended up on a Swiss Mountain side with avi's piling in on top of each other. Some were sinking into the floors and only their heads were showing and hands coming up thru the floor. All were asking what happened, they were all tp'ing home.
We couldn't tp out, we were trapped!!! I finally got a friend to send multiple TP request to me and got me out before the SIM crashed! Nothing else could have happened with avi's dropping on top of each other at that high rate!
All we needed was fire, lava and smoke and we would have been in a true SL hell!!!
Thanks SL for the wonderful adrenaline rush!! We can always count on you guys to amuse us during these upgrades, LOL

From: Nawlins Streeter What was going on last night? Last night set, I believe, a record for the number of people logged into SL at once. This is just the normal record-set!-grid-explodes stuff and does not, AFAIK, have anything to do with Mono..

Actually, the explosion wasn't due to the record being set... we had one of our central servers go AWOL, and that cascaed into the whole grid becoming unstable. Sadly, this happened right as we were reaching peak concurrency.

Looking good for an unpause in.. er.. -15 minutes??

Yeah, last night was a little weird. The TP's weren't working, then music stopped working, then I got stuck in Harlot's for a little while. It felt like we were snowed in. lol. But I did meet some neat people while there, so I try to see that as the bright side. I wish I had been stuck in a sandbox though... I could have spent that downtime attempting to learn to build stuff.
Also, for some reason, SL makes my PC restart randomly. I wonder why that is, because it used to run fine on the PC a couple years back. :/ Now I am on the laptop and I have to admit... everything runs sooo smoothly and the colors look great. But why would SL make a good computer crash? Do you think a system restore would solve it?

Since its the 25, will we go ahead and get the new veiwer?
08-25-2008 12:13
The new server is being rolled out today, what's the chance of us getting the new 1.21 RC viewer today as well?

The 1.21RC won't come out until after the 1.24 server deploy is complete. Look for an announcement on the status blog about the new RC.

is it possible to sign a sim up for future test deployments ? or maybe post a list of sandboxes which always will get test deploys?

Prospero, I believe it was you (or maybe a different Linden) that at some point in the past said you would not give out information ahead of time about whether the upcoming rolling restart will be even/odd, high/low, etc, saying that it would not be useful information. I know it would certainly be useful to me. For tomorrow's deploy, for example, knowing sometime today what part of the grid will be affected helps me considerably compared to having to wait until 5 or 6 AM tomorrow.
Any chance you will be able to provide that information sometime today?

I don't actually need this - I just sometimes ask the even/odd question because I'm curious and like to have an idea when my home is going to be updated - but I can see how people holding events would be really interested. Even a highly-disclaimered feed would probably be very welcome. Maybe something like the one that we can query to get the number of online users and such. Just a suggestion.. Something you can maybe throw together in your copious spare time, Prospero. http://blog.secondlife.com/2006/10/03/new-data-feeds-1/http://blog.secondlife.com/2006/10/03/new-data-feeds-2/

Today's is done -- the status blog was updated shortly after it was completed.
Re: information ahead of time as to which hosts are going to be hit, it's not useful information because it's not **reliable** information. I don't want to give it out because it would be easy for people to infer a sort of promise, or to make plans based on that information, but then the information may turn out to be wrong if their region migrates to another host in between when you compared the host to the list of affected hosts and when the rolling restart actually happens.
At the moment, the hosts that are going to be included as part of a sub-grid rolling restart are randomly selected moments before the rolling restart begins. (This is because the tool that selects them also lists the regions on them, and we don't want an out of date mapping of regions to hosts when we start the rolling restart, or some regions will end up stuck down as long as the rolling restart is going.)
I really do hope that at some point we will provide tools for estate managers of private islands to influence when their regions will be restarted, but at the moment this is what we have to live with.

Update just posted to the status blog.
We're still investigating some of the server crash modes we've seen in 1.24. It is likely that tomorrow, a patched version (1.24.2) will go out to the ~3000 regions currently on 1.24.1. We will **not** be rolling 1.24.1 to any regions that don't yet have it tomorrow (Tuesday). More information as it becomes available.
(Hey, this deploy is taking longer than originally suspected, but at least we haven't done any "revert to the previous version" passes yet!)
