Upcoming Changes for Adult Content?

This is from the transcript of the office hours. Having read through the whole thing, the obsession with commercial/ business is frustrating as well as infuriating. The impression given in the above is so long as a build doesn't operate as a business then accessible adult content is fine.
But one example was if you advertised a wedding on your property, if you had sex balls in it, and some guests walked off and used them, that was "adult content", but if it was a private wedding with just your friends, that was OK. AND "word of mouth" could be advertising.

See, no coherence between Lindens, so how are residents meant to have a clue!?

I'm not up on who does what, but isn't Blondin meant to just be a PR drone in all of this? And Jack is land and something to do with the G Team? So we have a mouthpiece that doesn't ever seem to know, and the person who must be clued up on land swaps and definitons also not appearing to know.

Either they all know, and are hiding it to prevent mass rebellion, or none of them know and are hiding it to prevent mass hysteria.

It makes no sense to me, I was talking to someone who won't really be affected by all this (at least not directly), and she was pulling up stuff from the beta verification as what and why this is going to happen. Everyone is in the dark over this, and those that are supportive can know no more about what they're supporting than those that are opposed to it.

I'm still bemused over a Linden seeming to think it's only commercial adult operations that are going to be forced to move, when that allows for the generous residents to simply give away adult items, and provide adult activity areas and not have to worry about moving. Oh, and also in the transcript, on that note:

From: Jack Linden
we're not moving people Xantarius, we're moving content

This troubles me greatly. It's only *content* that's being moved. But surely this content is products *people* want to sell, and *people* want to buy. Or places *people* want to create, and *people* want to use. It's very dispassionate to objectify in this manner, and disconcerting to read such a statement. In fact, the more I think about it, the more perturbed I am. The focus on business interests, lack of compassion for the people who will suffer, and lack of interest in getting the message out (I notice the "Good News" on the log in... They've had months to announce this "Bad News"...) is not suggesting good things lie ahead.

The only thing LL appear to be doing well durning all this, is turning residents against each other. Whilst we all squabble over this being good v this being bad, and then form little camps inside those groups of why it's good or bad, they can carry on blindly flailing around trying to fill the requirements of some unfathomable masterplan.

The Definitions Seem Overly Conservative
06-03-2009 15:35
After reading the definitions of Adult, Mature, and PG, it is obvious that LL is using the terms in a much more conservative way than is customary. PG is actually G, Mature is the equivalent of PG, and Adult is NC-17, R, and X combined, and maybe includes some content that would conventionally be classified PG.

It seems irrational to lump such a wide range of content into the one most restrictive category. It would make a lot more sense to classify content that would conventionally be X-rated as Mature, content that would conventionally be classified as R as Adult, and PG content as PG.

It also would make a lot more sense if the actual content in question was what the classification were applied to, as is done in the real world. For example, it is very common to see G-rated advertising for R-rated movies. In the same way, an ad, or description in search, should be classified according to its content, not the content of what it is advertising. If we can live quite easily with this in the real world, as we can, it should be no problem for anyone in the virtual world.

My 2 cents worth

I am particularly concerned that the current definition of adult being used by LL would rate all the saturday morning cartoons as adult because of the level of violence. Part of LLs definition of adult:

"Representations of intensely violent acts, whether or not photo-realistic (for example, depicting death, torture, dismemberment or other severe bodily harm) "

Last time I looked, Wile E. Coyote regularly gets burned to a cinder. That certainly falls in the category of severe bodily harm.

This definition of "adult" appears to force any location using any of the large number of the currently available combat systems to rate itself adult since all those combat systems depict someone falling down, apparently dead or at least badly wounded. Even SL's own damage system which will track an avatars "health" and can reduce that "health" to zero is clearly depicting death. What else would zero health be? What could be more intensely violent than being killed? Does LL plan to make all places with damage enabled adult?

Personally, I think LL is going to find that they are going to take a major hit in the bank account on this and that the current LL leadership will likely find itself unemployed within 6 months time as the company tosses the captains that rammed the iceberg head on over the side and scrambles to keep the company afloat.
