You too ^_^

One last thought before I go:

Would you allow for alternate spellings? Color, colour...grey, gray...etc

and also, would you allow for new words to be added to the dictionary of the world?

Why not if it was possible.
I personally love making up my own FD words like grumpify, grumpifying, meatiate

There probably would be away to script a combat spelling game hud. Just not sure how.
Scripts aren't fd-friendly I am more of artist and dreamer. I could do art work.
I need to go meatiate on real life now.
Thanks take care
Have good day.

ive already stated a number of times in this thread that i dont care :/ just because you percieve something a certain way doesnt make it true. there is enough substance in my posts in invalidate any stereotypes about me. i dont think the problem is mine.

FWIW I perceive you as lazy and inconsiderate of proper netiquette. (anyone who knows they are doing something incorrectly yet still does it then I only have one conclusion left to make). And to me that is fact. But since you don't care the point is moot apparently.

(I haven't read this entire thread.)

I am very forgiving when I know that folks are typing English as a second language, and even appreciate some of the linguistic quirks that result in the same way that I enjoy people speaking with accents.

But whenever I encounter an adult born and raised in an English speaking nation who can neither spell nor form a coherent sentence, I have difficulty taking them seriously unless they're really exceptional in one way or another. For example, I know a couple people in-world who have fantastic RL and SL artistic skills, but who spell and write at about a 4th-grade level. They obviously aren't mentally disabled, so it confounds me that they're barely able to communicate via text in an understandable way.

It also shocks me that most of these folks are high school graduates. How in the hell do you get a diploma when you don't even know the difference between a plural and a possessive? How is it possible to receive a passing grade in English if you never use a SINGLE comma or period?

Lack of capitalization I can forgive in chat, as chat text is brief and real-time, and you do what you can to speed things along. But capitalization, punctuation, and proper sentence structure are essential in more "formal" forms of communication, like message boards, because they all HELP PEOPLE UNDERSTAND WHAT YOU'RE SAYING.

Unless I'm making fun of you, I NEVER respond to posts here that are all just one long blob of words with no periods or capitals to indicate where a thought begins or ends. If you don't have the time to ask a question properly, I don't have time to answer you. (Again, if I know or suspect English isn't your language, it's a different story.)

And regarding chat-speak: Since I have 10 fingers, a full-sized keyboard, and I can type without looking at the keyboard, typing 'for' or 'you' don't take me any more effort than '4' or 'U'. I totally understand such shortcuts on godawful input devices like cellphones or blackberries, but if you're actually using a computer, it just seems childish and unnecessary to speak in code like that.

Well Graphicguru, ive had some college education in RL and took advanced creative writing classes at Santa Barbara High School. I’m not a drooling idiot and my IQ is over 140 not that it matters.
Hi Swan, if you noticed I didn't pick you apart as some have.
I can relate to what you are saying. I was also tested in IQ when I was a child and the psychologist stated to my parents that I was way off the charts... I may never really know what my actual IQ is...oh well...

As for my persistence in using three dots (pause for dramatic effect) or my continual use of three question marks to emphasize perplexity...what would it matter to anyone's educated sensibilities...???

Anyway...We all learned a lot about the English language and we are a little better for wear, and could use a break. What say we ask the moderator to PLEASE LOCK this thread, it has just about ran out of its usefulness!

Making up new words is an exciting part of language use. It's one of the fields I'm very interested in, actually. "Grumpify" does exist already.... -ify is a very useful suffix in English! ;)

@Wildefire: Well put.

@Strauss: I don't agree with you on lots of other topics, but here you are right. ;)

Wow you mean people have professional careers to make up or study words?
That would be cool job possibly but I don't know, I always felt weird in a academic environment. Probably because I dropped/forced out of school when I was thirteen after being convinced that nothing I did well would be taken seriously.
Everything I know was self taught. I figure Grumpify was word I made up. Don't ask me
how to fix a run on sentence or what dangling verb is because I don't remember.
I have been trying to remember how to spell lasagna, lagsana all day.

It's part of my job, actually-I've written papers on new words....it's real fun!

Forced to quit school? That sounds bad...because my parents are working-class, the teachers tried to put me into a secondary school that would have had me finish after grade 9 instead of going to grammar school (13 grade school in Germany). Despite that I went to grammar school and now teach at university. I wish I could go to my elementary school teachers and show them the finger sometimes.... :D So if you invent new words, that's cool!

@Trout: I might try to adopt you and drag you to class with me.... :D

It's a deal. Can I be a guest lecturer? I know all sorts of interesting stuff. Your students would never be the same. Maybe not in a good way. I've got good references - my vet, parole officer, the crazy lady with the cats that lives next door, and my resume is so good I have no hope of ever living up to it, mostly because I made half of it up.

I'm not actually qualified for anything, but I do teach continuing education classes to attorneys and a class in small business formation to soldiers transitioning out of the Army.

Oh, and if you're adopting me, does that mean I get your stuff when you leave SL?

I love to try to read academic papers even though most of them just don't rezz in my
head. Perhaps you can share some new words you've created, patent what not for my
eyes to taste. I promise I won't give them to anyone else;) I love words even
though some words I don't keep in my head very well.
At 13 it felt like I had been forced out because of the situation, perhaps in reality that wasn't exactly the case. It was pretty bad situation at the time.
Technically in US its illegal for 13 year old to drop out of school but depending on the time or who the person was or their circumstances they didn't do much like they might do today.
I am not sure what is below working class or if it exist but that was what my Mother was, and I am but luckily I have blessings to have few things i.e roof over my head, older computer that can handle Second Life, Internet that works most of time and ability to pay for it. Although when I was 13 my Mother was working but for a while there we were living in old fashion Bread Van and for longest time pretty scary housing project aka Ghetto like place.
I had two younger brothers, was doing poorly at school and there was no one to help out at home so I left for to care for my brothers until it got to hard and I ended up living in worse situation for years after that.
I tried to go back to school when I was 16 or 17 after I was placed in orphanage because my mother had given up custody of me, even though I didn't know she had done this.
It was the most stable enviroment I had until recent years in my adult life after
living long period on the streets, to foster homes to foster homes and various other places.
I even got a GED, spent year in Graphic Arts Program but wasn't able to afford the certificates or was able to finish because I was told by my Mother if I didn't return she disown me.
It took me years to get out of the situation I was in but eventually I got away but then I was too ill to really go back to school. I guess what doesn't kill us, makes us stronger.
These days on good day my Sim mate gives me Mathematic classes when I feel rezzed enough to learn.

In most cases I'm ok with someone having improper spelling/grammar. I mean hell even i do it. If it wasn't for the built in spelling checker in firefox, a larger percent of my posts would be like that. The only problem i have is when people talk idiot language. Examples like "HOW U BULD PRIMS" or "I NED NO HOW 2 MAKE STUFF". Speaking in all capital letters makes it hard on the eyes, and doesn't give the poster any more attention, as opposed to the correct way. It does the reverse actually.

Substituting words for single letters/numbers is a bad idea (example 2 = to, U = you). If someone is to ask a question, make sure you put a '?' (Question mark) at the end of your sentence. The symbol exists for a reason. :P Sometimes people not native to English may make the mistake of asking a question in this form "How to buy a sim". The correct way to ask this question is "How do I buy a sim?". Notice the wording has changed? If you leave the question mark out of the 'wrong' way to say it, you can mislead people into thinking your trying to tell THEM how to buy a sim. :P

I've been on many web forums, of different communities entirely. I've seen these mistakes so many times, It wouldn't surprise me if these bad choices in grammar/spelling completely replace proper English *snicker*. I'm not one to pick apart ones posts, nor do i enjoy reading other people doing this. Some people tend to go way overboard and become what we call Grammar nazi's. These people tend to criticize and insult one for not being perfect. I usually tell them to take the letter Z, shine it up real nice with some K Y, and something about a A hole. :)
