shoes, i bet it was shoes!

seriously like the above posters stated, it's what YOU make it. have you ever wanted to fly a plane? a spaceship? walk the paths of a Tibetan monestary? you cna do that here! want to BUILD a Tibetan Monestary? you can do that also. you are only limited by your imagination.

with that said, go have fun! dance and shake your tambourine.

I know its been said but I'll say it too…SL truly is not for everyone. Not that there is a certain type or typical SLer. Open the People tab under Search and just start typing in random last names you’ve seen in SL and then start down the alphabet for the first names…like A Carter…then start clicking on the names listed. See all the empty profiles? I think it’s safe to say that millions of people have tried SL and found it not to their liking. Sounds to me like you’ve given it your best shot. Maybe you should just step away, not spend any more money. Read a book or watch TV maybe.

Well said, Miss Tombola!

(and by the way, I see on your blog that you're a big fan of Girl Genius. Me too! I love Agatha. In fact, I've adored Phil Foglio's work since long before GG. He is a classic slapstick humorist who happens to be a talented artist as well. Be sure to read his "Buck Godot" comics and other earlier work).

*jumps up and down like an idiot*

Hey, I love Agatha, too! (And have read Phil's stuff for oh, 20 years?)

Sassy that was a totally sweet comback!!!!

Most times I think even though people try to reinvent themselves on here as far as looks, style and shape even gender and species, the RL personality seeps through. So with that said maybe you try not to expect too much and let things ride. I came to SL because I was tired of my Sims character and feeling like I couldnt control her moods and her drive. On SL I started working at at upscale spa as a massage therapist. When I say upscale I mean we wore unforms and the whole nine. It was fun. Now I have a bf and I help him with his beach that he owns. He just built a spa for me to run and enjoy. Oh and in RL I am a mother of 3. So Im not a tech geek although my degree is in Technology. SL has the potential. With more possiblities then in RL. And remember in RL they put a man on the moon. Build your own moon in SL and place condos on it.

lol...you get out what you put in

And there is the music...

I go to several coffeehouses and it costs me at least $ 10-11, plus food. In SL there really are acoustic musicians that are the equal of the pros and semipros. Never leave your living room, tip them L$ 500 and the beer is cheaper too. A wide variety of music, and you can switch off every hour on the hour, most days.

While I mostly hit the folk and folk rock, in the last month I've enjoyed several concert pianists, jazz, rock and flamenco guitar, all 'live' in the basic sense of the word. What's to not like?

I complain as much or more than most about LL, but SL, when it functions, has a fair bit going on.

Kryos,

I probably sounded a bit like you way back when I first joined. The simple answer is this: Second Life is what you make it.

First off, you mentioned hitting the employment. You don't *need* to be employed at all. Many are quite happy livin' an unemployed Second Life, paying in whatever they need or living off the rich amount of freebie content available. A great many others have also honed some of their building skills and "live" of that. I'm one of those.

As far as building things -- many, if not most, have honed their skills in here. The "RL industries" are often hiring residents to do their building. Frankly, I often see new talent around, too.

When you say you spent "50 bucks," was that US or Linden? If Linden, that isn't very much -- if US, well, you've likely vastly overspent.

There are vast worlds beyond the cyber sex.

Some fun things to do in SL:

Search Events for "Trivia" and jump into a game. I won a couple hundred lindens playing trivia the other night.

Search Events for "Primtionary". Loads of fun like pictionary but with prims.

Buy or demo a horse and go find some riding trails.

Visit a male strip bar! Oh yeah that's fun! Even prudes enjoy it, but be prepared to tip at least a little something.

Search Events for "Live Music".

Search Events for almost anything that you enjoy in RL to find it's SL Venue. I can almost guarantee it exist out there....poetry, writing, feather boa fetishes..it's out there.

I suggest Skydiving at Abbotts or one of the other places. It takes a little practice, but it is a lot of fun. The first time you splat is a riot.

Ok, so it's been over a week since I started my "second life". Quite a bit I hear about how people are addicted to SL and they are "balancing it with their RL", but I don't understand it.

I guess what I am trying to say is that I just don't see what is so interesting about SL. Not only is it relatively empty right now, its mainly just about social interaction (aka cyber sex) and a bunch of professional rl people trying to market on the faux paus of others.

What am I missing here? Should I even continue to bother at all?

I'm sure many others have responded already but here's my two Lindens regarding sex and more in SL.

I've been in world for well over a year now and the only sexual encounters I've had was trying out a neko sex bed with a friend who was in large cat form (me as neko) and laughing ourselves to the point of hyperventilation when the poses mismatched our bodies (as a big kitty, he is pretty primmy). Oh, and recently our escapades found us in a BDSM shop as neko (me) and he as jello, trying to find out which bondage furniture best suited the jello/neko combo (Trout says we're no longer SL virgins now). Again, we laughed ourselves silly and hammed it up for the staff within earshot -- I'm amused to ponder what their watercooler chatter was like after we left.

Sex is not necessary and not everyone does it. I have barely scratched the surface of SL but for me, I love exploring the amazing builds others have created. Gardens, fantasy worlds, space, and on and on. There are even cool educational installations, art exhibits and more.

Surprisingly, perhaps, I am very private and very shy. It takes a long time before I come out of my shell and feel comfortable interacting with others so most of my activities are solo (exploration).

I build... not very well, but I enjoy "doodling" and I find it relaxes me. Sure, I could play WoW or Everquest etc., but I look for the peace and serenity in SL. It's relaxation. And then I turn my PC off and go read in RL, socialize with RL friends, watch too much anime etc.

SL is just another form of relaxation or a hobby for me. I like being there, but it's not vital. Would I miss it if I couldn't be there? yeah, for a while. But I've never lacked for things to keep me occupied.

SL is what you make it and some people wait for the world to come to them. SL happens, but it needs to be engaged. And many, I suspect, never click with SL. *shrugs*

To each their own. I hope you find something worthy of your interest, and if not, there's always RL ;-)

Buy or demo a horse and go find some riding trails.

My SL turned around when I found and purchased my first SL horse. I was like the OP, wondering what else is there to do.

One thing I've always wanted to do in RL was own a horse and be able to go riding. However, current financial situation dictates that I not do that for at least a couple or three more years (one child just got married, the other is in college).

When RL gets frustrating, I log in, jump on my Clydesdale and find a nice, peaceful place to ride.

Not to mention, my fascination with virtual horse ownership eventually led to my own business (stopping here to avoid any advertising).

I guess my point is, see if you can find yourself in a similar circumstance and make the most of it. If it still just doesn't work out, well, like others have pointed out there are probably a lot more people that didn't find anything here and moved on than have stuck around.

ETA: Time for my nightly ride. /me waves and logs in.

Hi Kyros,

Sorry to hear you're feeling this way in SL. :(

First of all... please don't let any of the posts above give you the feeling that "if you don't like SL, you must be a low quality person". I only mention this because this is what I always feel when I read messages like some of those. I don't want to put words into anyone's mouth but I'm pretty confident that's not what anyone means. Not everyone will enjoy SL, but that's not meant in the sense that "not EVERYONE can enjoy fine operah, dahling" - it's in the same way that "not everyone will enjoy fishing". It's just this hobby, ya know.

Most things in SL require a certain attitude to work. Sex is popular because it's a simple one - the attitude that you can get all excited by looking at things or reading text. That's pretty common, which is why it's so popular in SL.

To go beyond that, though, and feel satisfied, there's a willingness needed to suspend disbelief and to treat the graphical world as more real than you otherwise would. This is why a person mad keen on SL sex would balk at the idea of taking their date for a walk on the beach in SL - sexual arousal from reading text is automatic for those people who experience it, but suspending disbelief to that level isn't.

You might not want to suspend disbelief like that, and if you don't, that's OK. Some people just feel uncomfortable at the idea of suspending disbelief for a virtual world - most people are naturally happy to suspend disbelief to watch a movie, but virtual worlds feel a bit less safe than that. Some people don't like the idea of doing it - for example, a vary competitive person might not WANT to suspend disbelief in SL, because that means accepting as "real" a world in which they see themselves as far down the ladder (not having a huge business and 5 islands maintained, when they know that others do, etc.). It happens. You can learn to switch your suspension of disbelief on and off when you need it, but you might not want to do that either.

Regarding building and creating. As others have said, most content in SL isn't created by "game design professionals" but by other people who were regular SL players. But one thing to add is that most content in SL, and the most infliuential content and successful in business, _is_ created by people who spend all their SL time creating - and some of whom effectively have the same time available that in RL you'd need to be a professional to have (because they're RL students, or unemployed, etc).

So it's not so much the case anymore (it used to be, this is a relatively new trend) that you can create things and, insodoing, influence the SL content scene to go the way you want it. So if you want to create things, you need to basically really _like_ creating things. Not "creating things in order to do XXX" but, just creating things. Again, it's perfectly fine if you don't like it.

Basically.. you don't HAVE to get addicted to SL. :) Play it as much as you like, and if that's not at all then, sorry this wasn't what you hoped for. You can try to adapt to enjoy it more but this certainly isn't mandatory, and focusing too much on SL too early results in burnout much more often than it results in addiction (it's just that people who post on these forums tend to be addicts!). Have fun whichever you do. :)

Welcome,
It can be really difficult at times especially when you're starting.
Still is for me at times difficult even now at times.
I make things, there is lot I don't know, and truthfully most of classes
I don't follow well with, there people who make better stuff, make more money
but it really doesn't matter in big picture.
I have found friends who spend hours who taught me things from mathematics,
graphic design, and anything else you can imagine.
As my real life partner says some may never get Second Life, may get more for example out of Gay.com then here.
Personally my first alt was here in 2003 and I was here years before I even had close friends or even secks.
There is limitless possibilities of stuff to do, learn, experience but I also know from my experiences that I have become at times lost, overwhelmed or clueless what to experience next.
I make things, I meditate here, I write, I imagine stuff, I have gotten wonderful gifts here, friendships, inspiration, explore things I can't see or experience in real life.
I have business with a friend, we make things together, we don't earn much, I spend more then I earn in spite of friends here encouraging me not too.
There is so many things here I often get overwhelmed by it all and I often don't have enough time in day to find it and do the other things I usually do every day.
Do what you like, have fun, if you can't find what you want, make it yourself, be patient it gets really overwhelming still does for me.
My first alt was here since beta, there is lot I don't know. I don't even know where to find a huddle.

This sounds horribly cliched, but it's true...

SL is a place where you can be what you want to be and do what you want to do. And the only person that can make SL live up to what you expect, is yourself.
The easiest way to do things is switch your brain off and let your imagination take control.

As for the sex, it's all overrated. My SL sex life is just as remarkable as my RL sex life.

Sigh :(

I have to agree if it is all about pose ball, do me yeah it can be pretty awful and overrated just like rl version of whatever makes secks stink.
SL like sex is only fun if there is right amount of creativity and personal connections that make it pleasant exchange or pass time.

Probably the wordt thing to do it go look for employment, if that is not what you want to do in SL. If your dream is to be a DJ or an event host, go learn to do it, and find a job, but only if you think you like it.

For the rest, it has all been said I suppose. It is about whay YOU want it to be. My first experience was not very good as well (2 years aog or so), and then I tried it again a year later. Just to camp for some lindens for my gf. Soon I discovered building, went premium, purchased land. My AV does not participate in poseball hopping, not even much in socializing. Most of my time is put in either building, or running my business, and I still enjoy it. That is what I want it to be. So the main question to yourself is:

What do YOU want your Second Life to be?
