Hmmmm,

Dont think I am an alt. Dont see the prob in being an alt if I was one :) I am sure many of my friends could be alts but never bothered to ask

I had a friend that had been here a while and within a few days I had new skin hair clothing, etc.

My profile I never much cared to take time to figure that out. And then the hangout and the forum helped me out on that, and Lil helped me on the Picks tab hmmm that was a few weeks ago me thinks.

Didnt sign up on the forums till later.

Oh and one of my friends that has been here for quite sometime finally filled in her profile last nite :)

I had great friends and mentors to help me through my first days. In a week I will be 5 months old still very new on alot of stuff but I will get there one day.

You need to consider the motives behind creating an alt (alternative character). An individual may have established piss-poor reputation because he/she is a social jackass. They could have a history of drama or failed in-game relationships because they lie and cheat, and so they create this 'alternative character' to escape their reputation, believing they can start over fresh, instead of facing their problems and mistakes like we are forced to do every day within our 'real lives'. That is why the majority of the community remains skeptical and at alarm at the sight of an alt. You start over, pretending to be 'a new man... or woman', when in actuality, you're living a lie. What 'I' find most humorous is the fact that your very first account in Second Life is also very much an 'alt'. It's an alternative life to your real one. It's your 'second' life, giving you the freedom to be whomever you choose, living it the way you see fit. The reality here is... all of you are technically 'alts'.

Well with the Wingless avatars being available, many are using them for the starting furry avatars (good avatars that were sold, but now free)

Some of you are terrible wrong on some of the posts, the look doesn't mean anything, after a week in SL I simply bought lindens and went to Kmadd and MMS to buy my shape and skin, then off to Armidi to buy one of my hairs and to Vista for my AO... so with only a week I look better than many old-AVs, even with only one week I looked better lolol on my first day a guy called Robot Foxley gave me shape and skin that I still keep for sentimental reasons (that skin is also very good)

Last week a friend of mine joined, and guess what, she looks better than most of the other females (old ones included lolol), and why? Because it's so damn easy to have a decent look:
Skin: Peppermint and LF Chai had free female skins
Hair: Savoir Hair, Bewitched, Hair Therapy, Gurl
Shoes: Maitreya, Adam n Eve, Tesla - you can have a small collection of free good shoes
Clothes: just see http://slfreestyle.blogspot.com/ and you'll see how easy is to get a good look

So, I guess is extremely hard to say that a new comer with a good look is an alt, I know she isn't...

Someone was wondering why should one creat an alt... Well, I guess is because his/her alt wants to have a second life lololol

I have never understood the animosity towards alts. Until they do something unpleasant, who cares that they are an alt.

I feel the same way.

Yeah, and since there are a lot better freebies out there than ever before...all a new Resident needs is a helpful friend or a Mentor to do that.

Right now, I dare say even just because an av wears more bling than usual, don't mean it's an Alt (folks used that as "the mark of an Alt or a n00b for awhile too).

yah Me too, I'd love to not care, I love accomplished diff characters, reps of diff ppls but,
I have just been on the receiving end, given audience to or watched, too many alts doing anything but enjoying a diff nick/character, it's all fukery, not pleasant to watch.

This seems like a good place to reiterate my policy on alts.

I don't play "Who's the Alt?" games. If you want to play an alt, fine. Play it as a separate character. Or tell me right up front who your main is. Either one is fine...but I despise having my head toyed with -- knowing that someone knows me, while I know nothing about them.

Anyone who comes up to me and says, "I'm an alt of someone you know" will be instantly Muted.

My alt is well dressed, has a really good skin/hair/etc, because my main gave her the money to go shopping. Trilliannas profile is better filled than Raudf's and she still says "No payment info on file," even though I put payment info in at the time of her creation AND then put payment info in again a few months later. Of course, in her profile, it states she's an alt... <.< >.>

I'm sooo expecting someone to ask her in world if she's an alt. *headdesk*

That is the part that bugs me is when someone comes in as an alt and wants to toy with me.

Personally, I think if your alts are going to frequent the same places and talk to the same people, those people should know.

I have to agree, this is kind of a fun thread (I came here looking for information on something else, but this topic looked amusing so..... here I am posting).

I do have to agree with many of the posts about nicely dressed avies with no account info, I used to belong to a different virtual world (more of a 2D thing.. lol), and many of my friends from there, have come to SL. I own a store, I know where to get all the good freebies, so when they come, I will spend the day helping them get all fixed up real nicely.... like my friends did for me when I first came.

I first joined SL back in May of 2006, however when someone asks me when I joined, I usually say October 2007. I say this because when I first made my account, I didn't know that my graphics card just wasn't good enough, and I crashed constantly.... so I never came back til Oct when I got a new computer - with a good graphics card.

Yes, I have an alt. My alt is well dressed, and is used mostly if I just want to "anonymously" run around without IM's etc. My alt also has account information, as I got her before Lindens started giving accounts to anybody and everybody with no accountability.

I have no problems with people having alts.... alts can be fun.

I agree with you and Lindal on this - I hate alt mind games with a passion and that's why I never created an alt for the longest time.
I was hurt quite badly when I was bretrayed by someone I knew and thought to be a friend who got to know me as an alt and treated me extremely badly. It got to a point where I hated them on the alt and still really liked them a lot on the main. When I found out who their main I was livid. Needless to say both AVs were off my FL immediately and I never spoke to either of them again.

When I did finally make an alt myself it was just really for the account so that my business transactions would be easier to tally up. Sometimes I use her when I really want to escape my main for a bit. That is rare though. My own rules are simple...If I know you on my alt or my main I will tell you who my other account is or you will never meet them. I expect the same in return. If anyone I know wants to meet me on their alt then they must disclose the other. If I find out games are being played then they are of my FL and muted without any excuses being listened to.

You know you've been in SL too long when you see a thread beginning "You know you've...." and just assume it's a "You know you've been in SL too long" thread without reading the title properly.
