I thought this could be fun.. kinda like the "you might be a redneck" jokes. And inspired when a found what looked like a newbie (no skin, LL clothing) browsing my home with a familiar join date to another friend. And after visiting a club today that had 12 bots speaking in french to each other, all with join dates of this week, and no effort at all put into their appearance.. One even had male skin with Ruth's body.. and no shirt! I think I am scarred for life. my eyes are still burning!

so, continue the joke? or make this a politicall discussion about the purpses for alts. I created one, I admit.. but I am unable to login with it. LL doesn't like me?

Continue, by all means!

I can wander anywhere on alts and people haven't yet known..even had an alt with the same shape and same skin (But lighter) standing next to my main, and people couldn't tell. Was fun.

Then again, I've got three accounts with scattered dates ^.^ December of 07, march of 08, and april of 08

Funny thing is, the oldest looks the worst.

I usually suspect alts when I see someone who is really new, within a week or two who already has a premium skin, clothing from a popular designer and a profile already filled out including a good pic. Someone who just knows too much for only being here a short time. I'm sure there are cases of someone coming in with a friend who is already experienced who shows them all this stuff, but my first instinct is that they are an alt.

This can also depend these days on who they get as a Mentor. Some mentors are passing really useful information to newbies on groups such as FreeStyle. Which means that within a week, not only will the newb have a great skin, hair, clothes, but they will also have learned a lot of skills and been to a great many shops.

Of course this is much more so if they are female, but there is some male stuff around too.

then you would have thought me an alt when I fist joined

within a week I had a skin (purchased) designer clothes, profile filled out, and was a dancer, also within a week I had land, premium account

hehe and nope, this is not an alt, unless I am an alt of my alt

this is my first and main account
I have 4 alts, three are used as models, and one is male for when I do custom male skins and such

You know you've seen an alt when someone makes a way out field and wrong statement on a forum. People begin showing them why they are wrong and out of the blue comes an account with low posts that you never see who defends them and champions their point of view.

Yeah I would have definitely marked you as an alt if I saw that. Maybe I'm totally wrong and I was the only newbie who ever ran around the first couple weeks collecting freebies and looking to hookup, sporting my newbie skin, white t-shirt and slider hair.

It's not the skin/clothes/accessories that catch my eye, since there are so many nice freebies for new residents...it's the SL knowledge level and buzzwords that I notice.

Also...when one AV logs off and another AV logs in almost immediately...and you never ever see those two AVs in the same place at the same time. (for example, at the Hangout)

They should call that "Supermaning".

...and, I guess we are talking mostly about new alts, right? Because I am sure there are some well-established, long-lived residents who are alts...:)

Meeeemories... gods that first week was a frenetic romp thru sl. I had some problems getting lindens so could not buy anything for longer that a week... but had fun nonetheless.

An alt for me is some well put together avie in a seedy sim. The profile is usually skimpy and if the avi looks good with no payment info... sure bet. Bet pickup like I got: "Nice alt..."

It seems that with old well established residents.. their alts have all the fun

ah I have had me and my alt at the hangout once, at the same time
and nope not using the -multiple thing
I used a bot client to log the alt in LOL

so even then it is hard to pinpoint an alt

personally I don't care if someone is an alt or not, I just take each avatar at face value

In SL, the account is 6 months old and still has no profile information filled out. No picks is also a good giveaway.

On Forums, the account is a year or more old and has only a few posts - all of which are in drama threads.

Well I know many I've helped start out get called alts... have a habit at times of taking someone shopping for a nice avatar and some outfits from some of the cheaper stores ( I <3 Bare Rose )

Most of the time skins and stuff are freebies... though I have added to the Kani population a time or two :-P

I am an old an origional account (coming up on my 4th rezday). I have an alt. Yep he looks way better than I do. Nice skin, fashionable clothes etc. It just sort of happened that way. Anymore the look of my main with slider hair, slider skin and a rather Jimmy Morrison outfit has nearly become a trademark.

Why would an old account have an alt? In my case its so I can build without a constant barrage of IMs. Sometimes I just want to be off on my own creating something rather than sorting out other peoples issues or being social.

re: the skinissue:
I'm still rocking a newbie skin, but the only place I've ever seen it is in seedy/newbie areas. Most went off and forked out the dough for a nice new one, but I've always been happy the way I am.. and surprisingly I get alot of comments about it. I figger why bother changing if Im already happy.

you might be an alt if:
you do all the work but someone else spends the money
you can build like a champ and have nobody on your friends list

I wish I can have an alt named Raven Domano

My shape and skin are both noob freebies - I did modify the shape though. And at least half my clothes are freebies, but most are group gifts. But then I did start life as an Alt, but I locked the main in the cellar and SL is all me now.

Usually I suspect when there is a lot of SL knowledge in a very new account.

I endorse this product and or service.

= = =

My alts generally have filled-out profiles, and are outfitted with either good-quality free stuff or low-budget furry AV's.

It's amazing what trips to Free Dove and Gnubie can do for someone's appearance.

Moin,

Bah.. what need of alts would long termers have?

*hm* e.g. I have 3 alts, one for keeping money, instead of lindex, so my main does not have to much on hand most times, one for running tipjars, sploders and the like, so my main wont be spamed from money events, and a 3rd because I needed 4 av's for an animation/script some time ago.

All my alts are looking much better than me, as they wear good freebee clothes and skins, while my main wears self designed clothes, linden skin and hair. Design goal for my main was a fast rezzing av of only two 256x256 textures without transparency, the rest are original linden library textures everyone has in cache, with a uniq outfit everyone can identify from far avay. So how to detect my alts... easy... they are only in one group, in mine and even tell that they are my alts in their profile.

So even, if I might not count as a long termer for some people here, I think that there are good reasons for alts for a long termer that are business and not drama.

You forgot to quote my wink emoticon. :p

I agree. I said that to Maureen with a wink because she knows I have a few alts. In fact my main is over a year older then Mac. Mac is an alt that was made when I came back to SL at one point and forgot my password for my main. Rather then going through all the fuss I just made a new toon. I did unlock my main (obviously) in a matter of time though.

There are many uses for alts and it all depends on the user and what they need them for. My post was simply a joke at Maureen. :)

Alts:

Accounting purposes
25 group limit
Anti-social days (mostly building without IM's)
Alternate genders

And a couple because I wanted to see the new "orientation."

I think we are supposed to be suggesting jokes along the lines of the "if you have such and such up on blocks in front of your housetrailer, then you might be a redneck".

If they've never left orientation island but have three dozen Jira posts, 12 of which have been accepted by Linden staff, they might be an alt.

If they have n00b skin and n00b clothes but list their place of employment as 945 Batttery, SF, then they might be an alt.

If they were born yesterday, have n00b skin, and when you mention the possibility of upgrading skin and clothes they give you a bunch of folders and notecards and landmarks to Yadni's and Free Dove and such, then they might be an alt.

If they show a born date of a month ago and you ask them when they joined and they say, "right after the lifetime membership with free land offer expired , darn it... umm, wait, scratch that, what I meant to say was, 'last month' ", then they might be an alt.
