Who'd have thought that a thread with this title would end up being tainted by accusations of anti-semitism ?

The last batch of names (I think they might be still available) had plenty of variety. Some odd choices, though... who'd have thought a West Coast US company would put so many rugby union players names on the list? Troncon, Wrigglesworth, Castaignede, Contepomi, Lynagh, Pienarr and a few more I've seen around the grid.

I never saw it mentioned but the batch before this one had a lot of baseball players names on it. Baseball season is . . . well started, since they played in Japan those real season games. Dang. Baseball season started and I didn't . . ok I did notice, I just haven't looked to see who won. Or if the games were actually played.

But are you a cunning linguist? :D

You can't imagine how often I've heard that one already.....

@Suezanne: That's interesting-just copying this list explains all the spelling variants, but why would someone/LL DO that???

The rugby union names were clearly for the Wolrd Cup, I got my alt's name back then (Jenkins)

Why would they name a sim Trollsweat? I doubt a lot of thought went into it. They probably just tapped a book on names and this batch happens to be what it is.

It is better than the "look around the room, say what you see" approach which they were taking a while back; Television, Toaster, Washingmachine, Forexternaluseonly etc etc.

copying this list explains all the spelling variants,
I put in a few of the names mentioned in this thread, and this list was the only entry Google that had all of the 4 or 5 names I searched for.

The list I found is on JewishGen.org, "The Home of Jewish Genealogy". An easy explanation of how a person assigned to produce names for new SL users would come up with that list is that they were checking the family history of a Jewish person or searching for the history of a name or for other reasons had that list of names already on the screen or fresh in their memory when thy got the Noob-name assignment .

Easy explanations aren't necessarily true explanations, of course, but at least they aren't hard to come by.

Maybe they got the names from that site...It's as good a list of names as any.

That's what I thought. Then I found out you get different lists on different servers....but still, there are a LOT of Jewish-sounding names.

Alyx is a linguist,

Its probably curiosity rather than bigotry.

---------------------------------

I imagine myself the reason there might be more jewish names than usual is there weren't as many in the past? Thus they were a good source for new names?

I've noticed some historic NASCAR and Indycar driver last names.

By the time I could find Yarbrough on the new sign-up pages, somebody had already taken Cale as a first name. And Johhny Rutherford just isn't as cool as Cale Yarbrough.

Is Dick Trickle available?
