Okay, like a lot of the people here, I truly did believe that there were no questions too stupid to deserve an answer on this forum. That's what the forum is for. I've learned a lot and had a lot of fun along the way from derailed threads that could, perhaps, be answered with a simple yes or no. I'm also more than happy to help people with genuine questions and problems, both here and in world.
But I must admit to to feeling slightly miffed (putting it very gently) at a new breed of poster who seem to believe that this forum is here to answer any radom question at all that pops into their, apparently rather empty, heads. They have no intention of checking other sources of information before they ask and, besides that, the majority of their questions don't actually belong in this section of the forum.

Chaos is bad, I know, but we now have someone who over the past few days has posed these singularly challenging questions:

Collar hmmm?
Slot machines?
Is this possible?
Red on minimap?
Spam for buying L$?
Group land, how does it affect tier?
Amethyst tattle TOS?
Piggybank?
Circular landing?
To ban or not to ban?
Which AR is responded to the fastest?

Perhaps I'm being hard, but it strikes me that this person knew the answers to many of these questions. After all, how many two-month old newbies have a substantial amount of land, are fairly accomplished builders (I took a peak), have a business and a family of mistresses and pets. And why do we have to have questions that really belong in any number of forums except this one?

Are we here to help people choose which collar to wear, or how to script a nonsensical piggybank?

Okiphia, what's the game?

Oh, and where's Bigwig? I miss him:)

An awful lot of those questions were real questions. Glad your not the forum moderator...

And really, would a completely dead forum like most all the others be any "better"? If there is so little discussion that the majority of people that come here just stop coming here to answer quesitions as well as have fun (and I answer a LOT of noob questions with real answers), then the entire forum could become less useful.

I agree with the point of the post (there's a difference between SL specific questions and SL content questions), but it's unfair to focus on a single person though.

Someone new to the forums is going to ask the kinds of questions they see other people ask. Failing resmod intervention (which most don't seem to want on that level), it's up to frequent posters to (nicely) point out when there's a place more suited for that kind of question. The in-world 'Fashion Emergency' group for clothing related questions comes to mind, the Scripting forums for script-related questions, etc.

(And I still wish people would use search more than they do. Most questions can be answered within seconds by doing a simple search)

You're right, it is unfair to pick on one person. Yet again we have Ricardo posting his usual whinge about SL in general, we have someone asking for Tringo locations and a host of people who have not read the blog and are asking whether SL is down. We also have a discussion of weather and the cartel discussing their latest rather jolly jaunt.

We do have a rather interesting thread about getting the Lindens back to the forum. But why should the Lindens take this forum seriously, when it's pretty obvious very few of the people here do either?

My take? Be kind, helpful, funny, serious...or be silent. Unless a person is being offensive, trolling, or otherwise unpleasant, why sweat the small stuff?

If I can contribute an answer I will, if can't I won't, and many times I'll just skim through the threads. And frankly I've found some good info in the posts that were listed.

So if you don't like someone's repetitive post...eat some pie and skip over it.

I do get fed up by people posting questions that even half a look at "search" or (GASP!) even the Wiki could have solved, and I can't stand the bloody Classified spam where people advertise always the same damn sex beds right away in ALL of the subforums, or post the same classified every other day. THAT'S what gets on my nerves.

You know, the day we start running people out of a forum called ANSWERS because some of us think that there are too many stupid questions, then we've crossed the line from being helpful to just being a**holes.

Just sayin.....

I agree, but I've seen too many genuine questions I couldn't answer being dropped off the front page and ignored, bumped down by questions that are truly asinine, or not even questions at all.

Is that being helpful?

Um...look down at the bottom of the page, Chas. See the little page numbers? Click on 2 to go to the next page.

That's what I always do...and I keep going until I run out of threads with "New Post In Here" markers.

No need to get sarcy, my dear.
I meant questions I was UNABLE to answer, but someone else may have been able to answer. Not everyone goes past page 1.
Take the 'Lost attachment' thread. Lost on page 2, resurrected, and solved, possibly!
Or did you miss that when it was on page 2?

Different people shop... er LEARN in different ways. Some will go looking on a quest to find answers, others prefer to come where there are people and ask. I answer a lot of questions for people in-world to help them enjoy Second Life and often point them to the place they can find more answers.

It would be nice to have an FAQ for this place, though, although expecting everyone to read it when they need a quick answer to a question sometimes is asking a bit much.

In short, if it looks like a stupid question to you and you don't want to answer it, move on to the next thread. I also like to page through all the threads until the "bold" ones stop..

this is why we have an ignore feature. when you've had enough, you'll know. this is a perfect example of why you should begin your list. and just think, you'll then no longer be exposed to the trolling either. ;)

You seem to be suggesting that because she's got so far in SL, she must be alt or reborn, and therefore her questions are for some other nefarious purpose? Suppose you're right: so what? Is it your job to point that out? And possibly managing to bump a legitimate question off of page 1 at the same time?

Thank you, SL Resident Answers Forum policeman.

Resident Question: Isn't there some sort of rule against naming names?

This thread is mean-spirited. The question isn't legitimate, it's just meant to be hurtful to a particular person with whom the OP hasn't got any real cause to be upset. Can we agree to ignore it until it goes away or Strife comes along and puts the clinkers on it?

Well Chas, your example of the lost attachment thread shows the system does work. It disappeared off the front page but yet it was answered. The regulars here do answer every question that we are capable of. Yes we have fun, but the members of this forum are probably as much if not more knowledge about SL as many of the Lindens. I doubt many of us would come back if it was limited to stale Q & A.

Hmmmmmm.....

Can't quite understand all of this. If there is a place to pose questions where members can get simple answers without a great deal of hoopla, I'd love to be led there.

Sometimes, in spite of sending in "Tickets" which are not fully answered, there is a hope that other "members" may have answers or suggestions that will resolve an issue or problem.

I've Admin'ed and Moderated several other forums, and a very well understood - if not written directive - is, if a thread simply does not please you due to content, as long as it does not violate any "Terms of Use".....Skip Over It.

I thought the replies to my "Lost Attachment" thread and question were quite helpful and appreciate those that replied to it attempting to assist me.

I can understand the frustration at obscure post titles such as "What is this?" or "How do I..."

A concise topic title helps everyone...

It would also be helpful if people used the Search facility to chech if a post had already been made and for an answer to the query given...

I embrace new blood here, some may not know how to use the search facility - but vBullitin must be one of the most used forum software packages on the web. If someone can be able to register to SL and submit payment details, they must be able to see a big button up there saying "search"...

On the subject of that... Should not all SL residents at least be able to read here? I'm not talking about psting - thats debatable, but it's a huge reference (at times better that the KB)...
