Oh, gee, there absolutely cannot be "rushing around" from one location to the next. It would be as disastrous as if LL changed traffic to make bots flit around the grid: lag/crash/grid-no-come-back bad. There must be a delay (I suggested 10 minutes; apparently there's a pre-existing system that uses 11 minutes) before a subsequent destination becomes valid for payout.

(I guess one could distribute that next destination immediately when paying for the current location, but then the new destination must not pay out for that buffer interval. Not sure why that seems less appealing to me.)

The benefits for the participator are such....i'm talking about the real benefits....ignore traffic units for a sec, also ignore the generosity towards the people that use this system.

The bigger picture....you are paying for people to come visit you, thats' the long and short of it. For a 1000 L .....i'll get 500 visitors over a period of time that can look around the Square, thats 500 that were given Landmarks from the previous Cone. Now some might keep those LM's or many might ditch them.....the fact that you have payment records for that individual, it's possible to measure the success by matching sales over a period of time. Its all about getting as many "different" visitors as possible.

The fact that traffic units are involved are inconsequential....as they might walk over to some nearby shops on different parcels on the same SIM.

I love this cone idea. I think the direction you guys are going is better then the system Rene is referring to.

Here's how I'm imagining it:
User wears HUD, gets alert to go to location X.
If he teleports there he gets paid immediately and is not required to stay there at all.
The HUD shows a countdown until the next location is displayed.

The business owner pays the service provider some amount of money and a time period. Then links can be displayed to users for his store at a rate that gets close to consuming his money in the amount of time he specified.

To be honest, this kind of service is useless to me. People don't wander past my store and rent land on a whim. But anyway, I can see it being good for people who sell things.

FashCon Group uses the HUD system already....and for well over a year...where have you guys been? lol
Here's how it works, the 2000 participating creators have their logo and landmark loaded into the HUD system. The HUD system periodically changes from one logo to the next The consumer (9000 + members) wearing the HUD will see this....if the current displayed Logo grabs their fancy or they can ask to display the next logo via the HUD......they can then TP directly to the shop. No money involved, no time limits involved.

From the HUD, you cna sselect a Tour Bus ride....----> FashCon Tour HUD: You are now in Tour Bus mode. Locations will be chosen for you and everyone else on the tour bus. Click the Teleport button when the map comes up to go to the next location. Fellow Tour Bus riders are shown above the HUD.

The same system adding a payment wouldn't be too hard i would have thought, but requires the Creators to participate......then again why bother, from this HUD they get visitors for free!

Let's keep things a bit in perspective. Most business owners will pay only money if something is gained. For that matter, I do like the straight way Elanthius writes about it :)

No business owner with a bit intelligence will think that they will rise in search with 330 traffic point gained by those 30 visitors... 330 traffic is as good as none. My stores hang around 300-400 without any artificial traffic, and is nowhere to be seen in places search :D

Why would anyone want to keep an avatar on their parcel for 11 minutes? Of course so they take a look around! If you give avatars the occasion to land and cash, most will vanish within 30 seconds. I have ran money chairs at my former location, and that is what happened with most people that TP-ed in to cash.

Now you could say that the other proposed system will cause people to dwell on the parcel they find most attractive... well no freaking way am I going to pay avatars to hang around on somebody else their parcel! Now my sim is quite attractive to wander around (especially the plants part, I have been told) but that is not the point. If an avatar wants those 20 linden, they should spend their time at my place. Of course I prefer them to actually look around so they see my products, and many will, as they are required to stay anyway. So chances are, they find something they like, or remember certain items they refer to others.

Bottomline is that most of these initiatives are not meant for charity. They either want to generate traffic (camping for example, zyngo, and so on), or they want to attract potential customers (the cone idea, I know similar efforts on the grid as well). We business owners want to earn lindens. And seriously, if you think that most camping chairs are meant as charity towards newbies... you need a reality check. Some probably are, but I bet most are just to get a traffic ranking.

Bottomline two is that systems like the cones are NOT meant as traffic inflators (check camping rates, most people would stay an hour for 20 linden!), but to get people to see what the business owner has in their stores. No person with any sense pays 20 linden for 11 traffic points!

hey Marcel....its 2 L...not 20 :)

Yours is the ideal location to have such a device as the whole sim is yours, you don't share it.....so you'll get the full benefit of those 11 miniutes. By contrast i have Squares which contain 6 or 7 different shops on their own lands....so they could go wandering off there It doesn't matter anyway, i own all the other shops or have a commission arrangements with the others anyway.....so doesn't really hurt me too much if they go wandering off. it all comes to same pot at the end of the day! ;)

Am I missing something?

How is this any different than offering up a freebie to one of the very large freebie groups every week?

Well its not freebies...the "Cone"..you're part of a networked system. Its designed to get many different avatars come visit your shop. They click on the cone, it gives them the LM of the next destination.....they need to stay on the same sim for 11 mins before being paid...so they are free to wander around and look at your shop or any other nearby shops or whatever. You would hope they retain your LM in their Inventory and remember the location. You can pay in as much or as little as you want into the Cone....a bit like a Money Tree.

The FashCon HUD is something different, its primarily for Fashion and AV products, bringing together Creators and Consumers....no freebies involved, no money involved, no time limits involved.......just TP's to stores.
Creators are allowed to send Notices of new product releases....its delivered to the whole Group (11000 + members)

There would be an up-front cost for LL in producing such a thing. Most of the cost would be in developing the back end.
The ongoing costs would be borne by people wishing to donate some of their cash to newbies.
This whole idea will not put more money into SL and no extra money into LL's pockets, right?
So why should LL bother?

I wasn't aware of the "Cone" system.
Do I understood correctly from posts above that the "30 avatars" is the maximum number of visitors that the system would deliver per day.
When you say that people can pay in what they want, is whatever they pay divided equally over the 30 avatars.

Certainly, if it's a maximum of 30 avatars per day, then the deliverable from the system is the eyeballs and not the traffic.

I'm puzzled by this Cone system, Rene.

As far as I know, there is no way that a script can tell who is in the sim. It can find out how many avs are in the sim, but not their names or UUIDs. Am I mistaken about that?

Let me think about it. First glance....it's a tad too random for my tastes. If I'm going to toss out effort....I want it more focused on legitimate potential customers. Could very well turn out that 95% of these people are NOT potential customers.

If someone is not using it as advertising....strictly to put money into the hand of newcomers....I would rather just hand them a nice wad....than make them play a game for small amounts.

As I have stated before concerning freebies.....don't really care to have a ton of "grab and dash drop-ins" annoying my regular customers.....and if you make them wait 11 minutes....lots of potential for annoyance there.

I'd guess that the Hud takes care of the location information.

No...sorry for being misleading....i was using as an example the number 30 for maybe the whole day. I would pay the Cone 60 L directly....at some point 30 avatars will visit one at a time at different times......it could be as quick as 6 hr period or as long as 24 hours, depending on how many participants are online. Each 2L you pay in, is good for 1 visit.....its a bit like buying credits in advance....you just don't how long it takes to use up the credits. When the "Cone" runs out of money....its taken offline or out of the network. it's reactivated again, once you feed the Cone.

Well you never get a ton of drop ins....it will be 1 avatar at a time. you can locate the "Cone" anywhere...in or out of your shop...makes no odds as they are free to roam and window shop. They might be newbies now (or even older avies), but they might convert to PIOF users one day...or might save their Lindens and come visit your shop one day.
It can be measured if it's succesful or not...upload Transaction record over a period of months and sort by resident name. I was always keep a transaction listing (built up) by Year on one Excel file....I can slice it and dice it anyway i like....by product, by location, by amounts, by resident....so easy to see really.

Well MysticTools for one has a SIM scanner as well as the 96m scanner.

MysticTools goes up to 4096m too......no escaping :)

MystiTool HUD 1.3.1: Sim Scan - Coco Beach (NE) <249,152,60>, Distance: 129m - Merry Drezelan (F)
[11:22] MystiTool HUD 1.3.1: Sim Scan - Coco Beach (SE) <226,30,22>, Distance: 0m - Rene Erlanger

You think the "Cone" could not use MysticTools tech?

If MystiTool does it, it can be done. It's just that I'm not aware of an LSL function that does it.

by placing a cone which i'm owner of....and placing it on my own land. I guess it activates a sim scanner......you could not activate the same object on someone else's land that has "No Objects" create unticked. (i'm guessing on the last part)
I say this as MysticTools would not allow me to start a SIM scan on someone elses land with "No Objects create"

---> Can't rez object 'MystiTool Sim Probe' at { 117.714, 49.6954, 44.1987 } on parcel 'Starr & Eddy's Home' in region Coco Beach because the owner of this land does not allow it.

So a SIM scan from your own parcel works fine.

Scanning the sim isn't possible in LSL. LSL has a 96m maximum range. There are region functions, but I'm not aware of any that return the names or IDs of avatars. Perhaps there is one that I don't know of.

Right, but it's not hard to imagine something that rezzes up a bunch of things that fly around the sim and scan it all.

Ooer. The cone idea sounds good, but I don't think I'd like something like that. I'd prefer an area to stay within (up to 96m radius, which is pretty big) rather than the whole sim.

Lets be honest...if you rezzed a Cone in the middle of your store....arrivals ain't going anywhere else. From what i remember your shop was up in the air and enclosed.....so the chances of any arrivals leaving your shop are really minimal.

I've seen ones that work like that. They rez slave drones that zip around the sim. They break if the parcels have No Object Entry.

Anyhoo, if the Cone system uses a hud, then the hud can tell the central system where the avatar is located. No need for any sim scanning.

Also....don't expect sales then and there.....what you'd be buying into are future prospects. Retaining a landmark for your store could be quite handy...who knows if that Avatar one day settles down and rents land etc, i think secretly a lot of avies harbour a desire of having their on home and land. By having your landmark in their inventory would make you one of the first port of calls for furntiure.

Being a Landlord myself, I can't tell you how times new residents have asked me for good furniture store LM's.....after finding out what type of furniture they're into (which ignores more often than not our own Renaissance Furniture shop)....i'll dish out 4-5 LM's (yours is usually one of them)

Thank you, Rene. It's appreciated.

I wasn't thinking of doing the cone one, but it does sound like a good idea. Even so, where would one sign up for it? I tried searching but didn't come up with anything that sounds like it.
