Now I am going to go ahead here and raise a touchy subject. ((NOT)) NOOBS! Now we all see those guys in SL in the noobie outfits with obviously no money, AV, AO, or anything that us "l33t" players have and we all either make fun of them, or ignore their requests/pleads for help in getting involved in the game. Now I remember when I was a noob, it wasn't too long ago, about 16 months, and I could remember asking people for help or that 25L to buy a starter kit and either I got ignored, or a land mark to an escort shop (costs money) or a sandbox (get greifed) or a freebies place (shitty stuff that people for some reason can't sell)! Now I will start to get to my point, why do we do this? I mean we all went through these same troubles and we all got ignored, we all hated being treated like a well "noob" but why do we do the same back to them? I mean I try to help out noobs when I can, but really, most of the time I blow them off with a simple Landmark to a freebie place or notecard! So whats your opinion?

speak for yourself

I do not blow off newbs, I assist them daily, both as part of my job and because I enjoy doing it as well

planning to hold classes geared toward newbs and such too

so yeah,,, might want to replace the "we" with "I" as in... yourself...
not the rest of us...

We don't all do this, a lot of people spend a lot of time helping out newbies. Why do some people "either make fun of them, or ignore their requests/pleads for help"? Because they're jerks?

I honestly feel like when I joined and returned weeks almost a couple of months later to stay, that I met great ppls.
I returned to Ahern and met a few in the know ppls, joined a Group, had so much fun w/ other ppls w/ the same born/batch dates.
Had my ups and downs and those same ppls were around to listen, direct, help.
I also wandered, walked, flew everywhere, sims were communities, not even ness the themed ones, ban lines and security orbs were few. Ppls stopped and talked to you and knew their neighbors.
Sandboxes weren't that bad and if something arose randomly, it didn't last long.
There were 30k online during the day and 15 k if that, on late night.
Some times I feel like that era is over, or maybe I am "jaded" on the aspect.
I still visit the WAs to chat up and catch up w/ friends and ppls look while I sort Inventory, IMs, read the web.
I try to help, I msg ppls I determine are hopelessly lost, but I do watch a lot of ppls ignoring and mean to new ppls. Mostly I tell ppls how to use the toolbars/menus, Search, places to get good freebs, Lucky chairs, places like NCI, the Ivory Tower etc, and don't give them money.
Sure there is the jerk pretend newbs and the real ones, ppls that stay in the WAs all the time, I am sure are sick of them asking the same basic things.
I do notice the WAs have self motivated good help ppls and do know some of them.
I'm no where as good or as patient as them, but there are still ppls helping.

I enjoy helping newbies who cross my path, especially those that are interested in building or are just generally excited by the possibilities if SL. It reminds me of when I first logged on and restores a bit of that sense of wonder I had when I realized what SL really was.

I try to help when I can but often certain things I just don't have lot of patience for
sometimes I still have problems with things myself.
But when my first alt was new I remember being very lost and confused I had no one
and left. I came back 3 years later when I made this alt and I met few very nice people
who helped me that I truly appreciated but even within my first week I am remember
someone begging for money. He wanted some veichle had nice clothes, was much older then
me and it wasn't like there wasn't places you could make money back then.
There were tons and tons of places you could earn like 120 L$ and up a day while you slept
with camping.
Now that doesn't exist but it helped a whole lot.
If I ever had enough money to create jobs in world I would but most I can do is help when
I can.
The problem is I am human and some people are just plain annoying, heck I even annoy
myself sometimes. LOL

I enjoy helping newbies and always help them when i can . I was very thankful for the help I got as a newb, it is the least I could do is return the same . People helping people.
I never try to make fun of them . Although some can do some pretty funny things. But never make fun of them.

I don't actively seek out newbies, but I do try to help them when I'm asked nicely. Rude noobs get ignored quickly :)

My friends and I keep a collection of boxes in a "Noob" folder of free stuff that we thought would be helpful to those starting out. Some nice clothes, a few furry avatars (I get that request a lot when people see me), a simple AO, a couple houses and a couple vehicles (most free ones are not that helpful though, poor handling). We also have a couple weapons since it's such a common request (a gun and a lightsaber kit).

So, how many others have noob kits?

I treat everybody the same, whether 1 day. 1 month, or 5 years old.

I'm not the 'helper' type, in the sense i'll go and take somebodies hand on a trip around newbie stores etc. etc. It's just not my thing, but respect to those that have that patience and I'm glad they're around.

But if people have questions, whether simple or highly complex, I'm glad to point them in the right direction. Then it's up to them to actually put some effort in it, and try to put the info I give them to good use.
Some people will then dive in enthusiastically and come back with follow up questions, and i'm happy to answer those.
Some simply take the laid back approach, expect you to explain/do all the work, or simple hand over a full solution to a problem they have. To those i'm generally less accommodating.

So, how you're treated by me is based on your attitude and not on your age.

Over the years I've helped hundreds people (old and new) with issues from simple to
highly complex. And with my age, there are probably some established people lurking in the forums nowadays who i've helped with one thing or another, when they were frolicking young newbs ;)

Nory there is free programs out there like gimp, paint.net if you want to make your clothes
or textures but you're still going to have to figure out the basics.
But any texture you can do your own clothes, there is lot of quality freebies, if you spend sometime looking either online, i.e through google, forums in resident websites,
Sarah Nerd has freebies, read the texture forum sometimes if you find things in there they are actually helpful answers..
Problem is not everything is going to be free, if you want things for free you've sort got to figure out how to deal with what is out there and look.
I know it confusing at first and all, somethings I still don't understand and I have been around for while.
There is lot of hard things, lot of people don't have patience for those whose intelligence isn't high or they are unwilling to figure out things themselves.
There was lot I read and still don't totally get it.
And truthfully sometimes even trying to figure out certain information in RA in search is hard, you can find pages and pages on help me with my Gor lifestyle questions but its much harder to find why aren't those particles still there type of answers.
Most of all enjoy what you can, forget about rest, experiment, explore, don't worry about the money but if you're going to want to do your uploads you're going to have to put some money in the game or find a job or sell something.
I will tell you from experience jobs and selling things isn't easy to do here for everyone.

I've taken many a newbie to the NCI Centers and explained what is there to them. I've even done a basic walk-thru of the Edit window for some of the newbies I've run into.

It doesn't take that long to explain how the Search window works,or how they can find what will interest them(groups for example).

I often go down my list of basics I think they should know. There aren't enough mentors or volunteers to go around. It doesn't take that much time out of anyone's day/night to help someone out.

I'm so grateful to everyone who was so patient with all my questions when I first came into SL. There is always something new to learn and nobody knows how to do it all(with the exception of Torley Linden).

I remember pestering you with questions many times during what I think was a weekly Show and Tell. You and your co-host were very friendly and positive and provided me with great info and plenty of inspiration.

I do not hand out noob packages

I teach them how to find stuff themselves via search, instead of handing them something that they may never use (how am I to know what they like or dislike)

I follow the old adage... teach a man to fish...

as for the poster asking about learning to make clothing and such

use the search tool in world and search for some classes, there are a LOT out there
also check out the texturing section on these forums, it has a TON of info in there

the best thing to do if you want to learn, is just jump in and start doing and you will learn

:)

Well, I'm a good Newbie helper.

I hand out self made items, that would actually sell, and some high quality transfer permission clothes in a newbie package.

I sometimes have a crazy moment and hand out 200 L$ packages in money.
That way Newbies can have a good start and buy a little bit to start with.

I have notecards to tutorials and tutorial islands, and some personal best island map full of landmarks to places that SL hides way to well from the newbies.

Just see it this way, you are new, and have no idea what to expect. Especially the landing zones for newbies, such as Hanja need to be the open arm welcome to new players.

What would you do?

You land in your newbie outfit, hardly know any controls, and the first things that happen to you is a naked noob with a noob penis stalking you, and others bitching you off when you want help. What would you do?

I would de-install SL and move on with life.

First impressions are important. I helped countless of noobs with the game, and made them into early adaptors, with a little money to get to know the game. They'll taste for more, and thus keeping the SL economy rolling.

I think that's a good thing.

I try to help new people if they ask for help. Even if they ask for sex I politely refuse but instead I suggest they try one of the sex hotspots - not that I know many of them!

Lot's of newbies ask for sex, because that's the main reason they're joining SL :P
I refuse by standard.

"I DON'T KNOW YOU"

And I use the excuse of being a newbie helper, thus being busy. and I'm 4 feet tall, not having any adult shapes in my body.

That alone should keep sex requests off my back. Too bad some people have weird fetishes >.<

So whats your opinion?

it's newbs not noobs lol
newbs is new people..i can't even call them newbs i call them new people because i feel like i am still insulting them calling them newbs lol

noobs or otherwise know also as nubs are people that know what they are doing but do stupid not ignorant but stupid things and know better..

and i always help out new people all the time. ;)

I for one dont ignore them, i try to help the best i can or send them in the right direction. Unfortunately there are a lot of people out there who wont help because of who knows what, but in all honesty that sickens me. We all started the same and if it wasent for the help of a certian few, id still be wearing a new skin im sure lol

Sure just this past weekend, I was building in a sandbox i frequent and was approached by someone fairly new who was looking to get into building. I helped him through getting used to the build menu, we fiddled with some of the shapes and such and then I had to log off for the night. I came back the next day and this person was around, and he told me that he had a question about linking while i was offline and when he asked others there, they told him they wouldn't tell him unless he paid them. Has SL gotten to that point? that someone has to be paid to explain the link command? Its starting to remind me of the rating system that once existed.

I beg to differ. Newbies, yes, and l33tspk would actually type it as n00bs

Pep (But of course you can say whatever you like as long as you don't expect others to follow the same conventions)

Had two new ones (dont really like the word noobie) watching me the other day while I was building my store. They just wanted to watch :) Showed them how to rez a box so they could sit down.

They stayed for quite sometime. I would tell them what I was doing while doing it. Had them rez some boxes and shape and stuff sothey could do it along with me.

It was kind of nice to have company :) They asked some questions and I answered them (thank goodness they were easier ones :) . They umm even politely pointed out when I put a texture upside down lol. So showed them how to fix it.

They thanked me for letting them watch I told them thank you for watching.

So not everyone as you can see in this thread is mean to new ones, there are quite a few of us out there that help and well enjoy new ones.

Well I thought i might add a word or two, being a Newbie, 10 days old in fact, and would like
to take this opertunity of thanking all the people in SL who have helped me over
the last 10 days. Its been a great experience, very rewarding and I have made some
good friends. I came in to find out .... and found out a lot more than I expected.
Thanks to all of you , and I for one will be helping Newbies, not necessarily in the usual
places cos i'm a bit of a Wanderer, in fact at times it feels like i've actually helped some
of the Oldies :)

I remember my newbie days with fondness, as it was a terribly exciting and interesting time in getting to know this place.

One thing I do wish is that someone had just handed me some landmarks to Emery and Shiny Things and told me how to buy Lindens.

I wasted far too much time wandering around Noob Island and places like that digging through boxes of stuff, wondering why I need brick textures and a sofa. Between the badly made freebies and the laggy tackyness of the newbie places, my first impression of SL was, well, laggy and tacky :)

Now I tell newbies to forget about looking for tie dye t-shirts and hand them LM's to fantastic places like Hosoi Ichiba, Insilico, Comcastic, or Kowloon.

I remember my first days very clearly.

I landed at ahern a TSO refugee. A very nice lady said before I had even rezzed fully follow me. I guess she was trying to get me away from the welcome area denizens so she could help me with less chaos. Then she started to move off. Unfortunately I had 3 problems. 1. I couldnt remember how to walk. TSO being a very different method.
2. I couldnt see anything yet.
3. By the time I figured out how to talk she had vanished.
I still wonder what the dear lady must have thought.

Being the curious type I just wandered around Ahern doing things. Playing with the shooting gallery. Reading the tutorials. FInally ended up in the sandbox there and started throwing prims around. I got hooked on building by the poke at it with a sharp stick method by just exploring it.

Next I explored the search and found the linden picks section and instantly found things like a mahjong park and the Ivory Tower of Primatives and Yadnis.

Next I discovered the event callendar. Back then there were maybe 20 events tops in a whole day and most were classes or show and tells.

The first person that actually taught me anything about building was Toy and I went to every class she did for weeks!

My first purchase was a T-shirt from a mall I stumbled into while looking for land. It said "Lag Sucks". Still have that shirt. LOL
