I don't have a lot to add to the discussion but I would like to point out a pet peeve of mine.

Earlier someone mentioned "6 million Jews" being killed during the holocaust.

The fact of the matter (depending on which estimates you use) is that 10-12 million people were murdered during the holocaust. While the Jewish people were certainly singled out in the largest numbers, using the phrase "6 million Jews" is inaccurate and a disservice to other groups that suffered at the hands of the Nazi regime.

This comment is not directed to the original poster at all because the phrase "6 million Jews" is commonly used in history books, text books, and films, taught in schools, and used by teachers, preachers, politicians, etc.

I'm not even sure why this bugs me as much as it does but it's always been a pet peeve of mine.

This is really simple - on a private sim, the sim owner it the person that determines what rights are granted to the residents in the sim. Now, as a good SL citizen, that owner needs to bear in mind LL's stipulations, but they can most certainly further restrict it.

Therefore, it doesn't matter one jot what LL say if the owner says "take it down!". The resident has no "rights" in this matter.

Freedom of speech... a difficult subject.

When a christian for instance tells me his believes, he is very much intitled to do so. I have different ideas about that but I am not harmed by him/her stating their oppinion.

If that same person however calls me inferiour, shout names to me just because I am not one of theirs, that is racisme and very much illegal here.

Further more, showing any symbol in public to deliberatly point to nazi regime and ideas, will get you arrested and in jail in this county. There is little to no tollerance for that, since europe suffered severely to the nazi regime.

The symbol itself is not saying nazi, the way it is shown does. I would not want to come across that symbol if it refers specificly to nazi ideas.

I find racisme a form of stupidity anyways. Since I strongly believe myself that human is human and the differences between for instance me, a native dutch caucasian man, and an african or decent from africa, is purely caused by the climate, culture and evolution differences. The dark skin protects against the sun wich is obviously stronger in africa. Below the surface beats the same heart.

Strip a tiger and a lion of their skin and tell me if you are able to see the difference :)

Are we debating freedom of speech in general, or this particular situation which, as I understand it, is on private property which isn't covered by any freedom of speech law in the US or most civilized countries? Why, therefore, should it apply in SL?

I have a swastika right in the middle of my RL livingroom. It's on my statue of the Buddha and I see it every time I do my chanting and prayers.

It's a deeply philosophical symbol in Hinduism as well, but thanks to the Nazis no one can display the thing. :(

And why hasn't Brenda wandered in here waving her pants in the air as yet? You people are slacking.

The thing about racism is this..It's just an old thing passed on that is still around..
Most people don't even know why they are a racists..
They grow up in a crowd of people that are close in views and only know one thing..They are the best or they could be the best if it wasn't for this team over here..
They learn from everyone around them..They are taught about all the bad that every one else has done to them..They get raised on fear of the harm that has come to them because of someone they are told is not like them..

I see someone wearing this symbol on their neck and tattoos of lightning bolts and other things..I see someone that was raised that way..
It's not just them..It's every race that does this for whatever reasons..

Not all take the extreme path but some do and those are the ones that keep the stereotype alive..

When i was growing up i thought all the adults were the safe people and knew everything..They didn't fight and they had everything covered..Until i was 10 anyways..That's another story lol..

But i thought the adults were the responsible ones that made sure everything was ok..

The day i figured out it was them doing all the teaching of hate is the day reality really set in..

It's old hate being passed on..and the funny thing is in most cases..Someone brought up to hate another they have never met..Once they get to know them..They begin to see how much they were lied to their whole life..And if they are smart and can push the peer pressure off..They can become someone that takes all that hate and turns it around to it's opposite..

I feel more sorry for someone raised in hate than i would ever hate them..Because if i hate them..I am no better than them..
They just need to get out of their crowd and see the world on their own with an open mind..
Until then it's never gonna go away..
Stupid is a strong word that feels good to say..But really it's just ignorance because they never really knew..

Myself..I am used to racism everyday..I refuse it and won't let it drag me in..Because somewhere someplace someone wants it to be like this..they want us to hate each other..
I'm sure someone profits ..
I don't hate the man that bumped me in the store..I hate the thing that started his hate..
A symbol is meaningless until someone puts a meaning behind it..
I doubt we will ever see the day the hate is gone but damn if i will be another teacher of an old song that has nothing to do with me..The sooner we get started at turning it around the sooner the next generations will make hates opposite stronger..

We are all the same..we just need to see past the paint job as my father would say.. ;)

How is black people protesting against racist comments (backed up by a lot of court rulings) ridiculous?

Is this racist, ridiculous or both?

I'm trying to help solve a renting issue in which a home renter in a private sim was asked to take down certain contents from his home. The TOS seems to be pretty clear:

(iv) take any action or upload, post, e-mail or otherwise transmit Content as determined by Linden Lab at its sole discretion that is harmful, threatening, abusive, harassing, causes tort, defamatory, vulgar, obscene, libelous, invasive of another's privacy, hateful, or racially, ethnically or otherwise objectionable;

So I'm really just gathering relevant information to help solve the quarrel.

My question: is nazi paraphernalia as swastikas, portraits of Hitler as Fuhrer and other nazi-related content, something "determined by Linden Lab" to be "hateful, or racially, ethnically or otherwise objectionable;" ?

On a private note I believe it is a clear case of offensive content, but I need a linden answer to help settle this and if necessary file an AR.

As long as I have been around Second Life the following was real clear:
It is illegal in Germany and most of Europe. Linden Lab respect this law.

Note there is a difference between Buddhist wheel of life and Nazi red white and black displays. I doubt LL would recognize that difference though.

Perhaps this is a very simplistic view on this..but this is what I have taught my children.

There is only one race. The human race. There ARE different ethnic backgrounds, different belief systems, even different colored people. However, you don't see other animals making those things an issue or a reason to hate. You would never see a dog, for instance...the CANINE RACE, wanting to fight or hating another canine because of the color of it's fur, or where it came from.

There ARE no "race wars" because there is only one race. People hate because of a huge variety of reasons. But from where I am standing...we are all one race of people.

Ok..I know..simplistic. But my kids grew to be adults with THIS belief system. And I know they will pass that on to their kids as well.

Thats why I say just eat the Vegetarians & Vegans :D

God help 'em if we're stranded in the mountains after a plane crash.

Vegetarian..... The Other White Meat

Bear meat is nasty tasting and smelling if the bear has been living on a strictly meat diet, like salmon or carrion, as most coastal bears do. Bear meat is tasty if the bear has been living on berries or plants all summer, even garbage.

Personally, I think the other white meat is environmentalists.

I'll be the 1st to say it: The Servers that SL is hosted on, reside in California, USA. So yea, it IS the United States.

BUT- being a private company, they can rule as they see fit.

I was reminded of that the other night dancing with some friends up at SR when I got a im asking what the "chicken scratch" was over my head was....(I have a Kana group title that say's "Kawaii Neko Girl";) when I replied it was japanese he responded that "SL was American as the servers were in the US of A and then went on a racist rant.

I just muted him and reported him to the SR management with a copy of his IM's... should have AR'ed him too

One of the places where my best friend worked everyone at the cubes had an assortment of posters. One had Princess Di, other kitty cats and puppies, several Elvis, confederate flag etc.. Well when my best friend placed a poster of Malcolm X in her cube, all of a sudden everyone was told to take their posters down and were restricted putting them up in the future.

As much as I'd like to see that, I'm afraid it doesn't apply here. Godwin's law states that, as a thead ages, its probability of reference to Nazis or Hitler reaches 1. Kinda hard to apply when the probability hits 1 from the very get-go, because the thread actually discusses the use of nazi symbols.

I think I have met that idiot.. or his brother.. :) I just had fun sending him curse words in japanese until he started cursing in open chat, and then he was banned from the dance floor. *impish grin*

It is amazing the number of people that forget that America was founded from all countries, and it is supposedly proud of being a melting pot.

when i first had gotten to sl i remember going shopping..where we landed was right at the door of a club ..there was this guy walking back and forth shouting to everyone to speak english..that the language in this country is English and we all needed to start speaking it or leave SL..he just kept going on and on and on and on..

I finally had to say something to him because he was driving me nuts.
I just remember saying to him.. Will you Give it a rest already!!???
You are screaming in one language to people that speak another..When was it gonna sink in that the only ones that can understand you are the people that can speak English?

I probably should have just moved on and not said anything..I was new at the time and that was the only way i knew how to deal with jerks..I wasn't sure how to AR or mute people yet and i didn't feel like hearing some jerk spouting the whole time i was shopping..

Founded from all countries? Hmmmm...

Which colony was started by the Burmese? And what founding father was Turkish? I must have missed this one in history class.

I love Thai curry and I couldn't live without a carne asada taco, but neither of them was available to George Washington in 1776.

Pretty sure that Myanmar helped found the 15th colony, but they decided that the puritans were too uptight, and left before they were labeled 'Adult' and resettled.

And it is well known that George Washington's Great Grandfather 15 times removed bought his shoes from a Turkish in-law, but the in-law's name wasn't recorded.

All this information of course only resides in my head, but that doesn't make it any less valid. ;)
