For me, I'll tell the closest city as the one I live in... if I tell them the 'community' name, then it's way too easy to find me.

I'll tell my age, first name (Both birth and chosen if they ask the right questions), and my RL gender to anyone who asks.

I'll tell more specific things to close friends (Name of the 'community', height, weight, cell # in some cases, etc)

My RL and SL are not 100% seperate, so I don't mind.

if I'm on my griefer alt (Lol yeah right.. just my 'I dun wanna talk-a to yoo' alt) then I won't give any RL info at all.

I just met my best SL friend in RL. We've known each other pretty much since I started in SL (8/06) and have been close for the last 8 or 9 months. We knew some basic facts about each other when it was more of an acquaintance type relationship, but the exchange of real names, emails, phone numbers and such didn't occur until the friendship was fairly firmly established.

I am bumping you to an 8.5 on the Official Trout Measuring Instrument of Sluttiness. You are an enigma - on the one hand a sweet, gentle, intelligent woman who we would like to wrap up in our arms and protect, and on the other, a temptress to whom we would like to do all sorts of unmentionable things.

Congratulations and shame on you! You are a bit of a slut.

Just a thought on how close you get to giving away where you are, City, District etc.
To me 2 groups of people who you would not want to give your location or who you are to. First people many, many miles away they probably ok to give City/district to they might never identify you.
Second, would you want people you know in real life who you are in SL and what you get up? These might well identify you easier from info. you give out. You might be chatting to next door neibour you never know!

Sadly I made the mistake of giving out too much RL information and a photo.
It was only given to 4 people, but sadly it was sent on to a lot of my SL friends with a rude notecard and edited picture. Very humiliating and embarrasing.
Its quite frightening, I have no idea what to do as it was sent from an alt.
I urge people to be SO careful, no matter how well you "think" you know people.

Many of us just don't care, Lillie. We have our 1st like pics in our profile and we're not shy about who we are.

As for a rude notecard, that's something that's out of my hands. If people wanna create a notecard saying that I'm an asshole then that's fine too. My friends already know it. :p

But I can see how this kind of thing would be a problem for somebody that's guarded about their 1st life details. and I think some unlucky people out there have had a bad experience with stalkers and so it's totally understandable.

While I don't have a problem telling people where I'm from in RL;
if I was the OP I would've short-circuited the thread at the beginning:

xxx: So, where in the West are you? I am in Virginia in the East

OP: Oh, I keep SL and RL separate and don't reveal my RL location
for personal reasons. Hope that's OK with you.

Ugh. I hate so much the conversation that goes:

"Where do you live?", "What do you do in RL?", "Do you look like that in RL?"

I don't mind answering any of those (I keep the 'where' a little vague.) but it's just so boring.
None of it has anything to do with personality, kindness, or humor, which is what I look for in people to talk to.

Plus, when I want to think about RL, I log off and go live it.

There's, uh, probably a lot of things you didn't know about lindens. Another, another interesting, uh, lindenism, uh, there are only three jobs available to a linden. The first is making shoes at night while, you know, while the old cobbler sleeps. You can bake cookies in a tree. But the third job, some call it, uh, "the show" or "the big dance," it's the profession that every linden aspires to.

I do tell people what state I am in. If you don't feel comfortable doing so then don't. I am glad too that you stood your ground to such a pushy person. I believe I would've not told them either their insistence is a bit alarming and freaky.

I assumed she meant she used the general search.

So normal Google, well for SL looks like I'm in Japan and an author.
RL well I'm dead! So location not matter. Was famous though.

Google has nothing on me - not even close. However I am very careful about what I give out on the internet. It pays to be cautious.
