While I don't care much for n3tsp34k and single-letter "words", I can handle an occasional abbreviation, though I wish people would refrain from using them. Overuse, and outright unnecessary use does get on my nerves, though, and is the fastest way to get me to stop helping or talking to you.
Me: Hi there, welcome to the Isle of Wyrms. Tard: LOL! Tard: hi Me: Please feel free to visit the Cathedral and view the Dragon avatars. The market is here in Limbo with the sandbox. Tard: LOL! Tard: ok Tard: thx Me: By the way, that is a nice avatar you have there. Tard: LOL! Tard: thx etc I've literally had conversations with people who use lol as a response in a majority of their messages. A couple of times, I have asked them what is so funny, and they reply "nothing", and then I ask why are they (L)aughing (O)ut (L)oud every time they respond. They then look at me like I am from Mars or something. Truly bizarre people at times. |

I'm with you. I despise chat speak, and I admit to not investing myself fully in conversations where it shows up. I like the emoticons, I wish there were more here. I'll use chat shorthand, but not to excess. ROFLMAO, LOL, and emoticons are fine to accentuate a response, but over use is REEEEALLY annoying. Some shortcuts are also useful when having an intense discussion. No one likes waiting a few minutes for the other party to respond. Even worse- when they're typing in l33T. There's a difference between effective chat communication and turning chat into a puzzle game. _____________________

This confession is not in my best interests: it's going to sound dreadful, it's wrong of me, I'm a bad, bad person for this, but: When I see chat sentences that end in "lol" (or even more so, Forums posts), it instantly reduces my subjective assessment of the person's IQ by about 30 points and makes my Freeze/Eject/Ban finger twitch. Now, I know this is shameful, but that's really how it is. I just expect the LOLing avatar to attach some b0rked orbital weapon that was lame even before H4, or to commence a sequence of inane freebie Gestures. So, sorry I'm so shallow and all. But I mention it because I doubt I'm the only one. I love my freebie items!.. Just because they're free, doesn't mean they're cheap =p I've done something similiar in my Club tonight, but nothing so harsh. Some chic went upstairs with her 'pet' or whatever it's called here and started cursing. So I commented, partly to myself, 'Oi. If this isn't a convo I care to hear.' And they quckly went to IMs. Rude and/or distastful conversations should only be shared in IMs or with those that you know won't mind. I find loads of things funny and amusing. Heck, why even chat to others if you can't easily find amusement! =p But, yeah, in general.. Just mute them and prove yourself as the mature one =) |

If the place being described is or was at one time called Ethereal Teal, I have to say that it is my absolute favorite place in all of SL. I was brought there the first time by a very special person, and I in turn, only bring very special people, or go by myself. The music there is so tranquil I ended up scouring the internet looking for the station after waiting all night to hear station identification, and now the same tranquility exists at my own home both in RL and in SL. What a wonderful job.
On the OP's situation, you are nicer than I am. I'd have ended up trying to rip them a new one one way or another. I can't stand it when people compensate for their own self-inflicted limitations by trying to control others. I have danced there when by myself and also with a partner because that is the mood the place puts me in, and I will not be bullied into expressing my contentment in accordance with the "Emily Post Officially Approved Emoting Lexicon". I would have tested my avie disrupter until I had witnessed the effects of every modifiable option, so you're better than I am. Peace, avie origami, it all comes from the Orient doesn't it? Finally, I find it sad that people are beginning to spend more time dictating and paying attention to how things are being said than actually listening to what is being said. It makes it not worth the time spent sharing ideas at all, on an open forum or anywhere else. And there is a public chat channel for a friggin reason.
