i was shopping one time and i swear i kept coming a crossed the same girl who would comment on the click sound of my boots..this is when the click sound first came out..a friend of mine that owns BC designs made these awesome boots so i wore them everywhere.. i mean i loved them so much i bought every color she had when she first opened lol
So anyways this girl kept talking to the people she was with but actually meaning for me to hear it..something like..god these click boots they have now days are everywhere the sound drives me crazy..i had the volume to the lowest setting before off and may have taken 3 steps up to the vender we were shopping at that she could have heard..
three steps and it was a 5 minute carry on about the click sounds i had to put up with in general chat lol.. so i turned them up full volume and started walking up and down the wall of vendors.. I figured .well if i am gonna be put out there like i was trampling around then i may as well earn my 5 minutes worth of irritation i received..this was the third store i had seen this girl in and finally had enough of her bitching..but i guess some people would rather bitch out loud then ask in a polite way..could you please turn down the volume on your boots.. i would have been more than happy to.
we kept coming a crossed each other it seemed every other store the next few days and every time i would have them on low..if someone has a sound that is irritating me..instead of crying out loud i'll just turn my sound down more times than not..unless it is something that others are offended by ..then i will ask them nicely if they could please turn it down or off if it is in one of my places..

From: Isabeau Imako I have to quote Novis here. I also wouldn't have been half as witty (quick) as you. My answer to them would have been "Cop a Mope".

From: Brenda Connolly ROFL or ROFLMAO have almost become derisive comments at times. You see it here when people use it to sneer at a post they don't agree with, but can't say anything better to counter it. Okay, I'll admit to using lolspeak in a nasty sarcastic way. For example, I might characterize the people who heckled the OP thusly: ZOMG UR DANSING N PUPLIC LOL WE NOT WANT U HAV FUN HEER!!!!!eleven!!!!

As long as I stepped in it, I may as well wade in deep. I don't mean to be the Bill Safire (nor Roland Barthes) of txting and emoticons, but consider these utterances: 1. Qie Niangao: The piano has been drinking lol 2. Qie Niangao: LOL! The piano has been drinking. 3. Qie Niangao: The piano has been drinking. 4. Qie Niangao laughs. "The piano has been drinking." Really, do these all raise the same expectation that I'll next ask for the L$42 I'm short to buy my very first prim hair? I'd speculate that this effect is more pronounced in a diverse language environment. Silly little style cues carry more weight when vocabulary and syntax are such unreliable indicators of anything.

Unless one of those avvies was named Jopsy Pendragon, then they have no real say over what is or isn't allowed in that chunk o' Teal, do they?
(barring regular TOS rules, of course)

I chat speak - i dont bother with caps and punctuation at times unless it impacts the meaning. I wont go thru the bother of trying to figure out to write gr8 rather than great - cause i have to stop to think about it- but "u" and "r" come naturally. There are places where that sort of thing is completely unacceptable and there I will conform -but in the forums, I am usually more concerned with getting my point across- same as chat and YM. Spelling gets to me though - i miss their and there at times- knowing what i shd use and just pick them wrong- but i re-read my posts - usually - before submit.
Hehe - we strayed again!
To the OP - can't be said enough- mute is your friend.

From: Brenda Connolly OMG!!!ROFLMAO!!! I don't get the "eleven" Usually when someone is over-using exclamation points to that extent, a couple of stray '1's will work themselves into the mix. ZOMGZ!!!!!111!!!!!, for example. Actually typing out 'eleven' mocks this.

From: Isabeau Imako Why the hell has the piano been drinking? It's jealous of an organ. I type faster than a greased pig on a slip-n-slide so resorting to U and R would be unlikely. And I'll try to avoid LOLing lest my IQ dip into the single digits When I'm around a bunch of avatars and there is no chat, I find it rather lonely-making. Even if they're just dropping the most mundane lines to each other it at least makes the world seem a little more populated and I like that.

From: Marianne Little they said they should mute us. I said fine and they continued commenting. I asked if they needed help to find "mute".

I prefer 3 and 4, Qie, so I guess I'm with you. But netspeak abbreviations don't get under my skin much, and I use them too. You need a new piano, by the way. They aren't supposed to do that.

People should be kind to one another. There's no good reason for being judgemental unless the person is someone, say, you are going to be doing business with. People do different things at different times, and when they are with different people.
Someone on a silly lark with a friend who is judged by an onlooker as having a "single digit IQ" has done nothing to deserve that, and in fact it the judge who needs to do some soul-searching."
In SL we don't have the physical accompaniments to verbal expression that we have in RL, so people make up for that lack in various ways.

All I can say is, the "peace and quiet" they were enjoying must not have been having much of an effect on these people if they were so snippy.

I tend to use LOL a lot in text if only because my normal tone has a bit of an edge to it, and I've found adding LOL at the end softens it somewhat, making people feel less apprehensive. There's more than one way to skin a cat, you know, Qie.
(LOL)
And, yes, I am aware it makes me look a bit of an airhead, but then that just gives me the opportunity to come up on someone's blindside, and coldcock them, if needs be.
(LOL)
