I've always found it sad that a predominately social place like Second Life would make a move to limit the natural social nature of its online forums.

This actually did happen

9/11/2006 of all days.

If you go to the archives you will see how many forums were closed on that day.

HAHA....I realize there is truth and have heard that many forums closed.......I'm just being a smart ass - I enjoy these off beat threads where people lighten up and goof off - the end of SL statements are getting a bit....well....old  . Have fun while it's here....it is still useful for many and more serious questions get asked and answered then there are threads like this. :)

Yes and it was rather sad to see them go away. Those forums were quite useful back in the day but then it got so out of hand. What with the fan/hater comments in classifieds to the actual need for resident moderators to police the forums to 'break up fights' in General. It was constant drama and alot of people were driven away and didn't want to even ask for help lest they get a rude comment or a thread derailed.

I'm really not trying to be a bitch with my last post, I like fun as much as the next person. People can be as sarcastic as they want and start with their 'the sky is falling comments' but I've been here for over 3 yrs and have seen it all here and I just don't want to see a useful forum yet again be closed.

Perhaps that is really why things are as they are now - maybe they have realised that the lurking threat of closing them will keep some decorum on the forum! and yet allow social dialogue to flourish. In reality the sky has not fallen yet - to coin a phrase! questions are still asked and answered and yet there is way more fun than ever!

Yes but there is a difference between being social and what went on back in the day.

I don't think The Providers give a shit enough about the Forums any more to even close them.

Would be solved pretty simply by opening a general forum.

I guess thats too simple.

Wouldn't even take admitting they were wrong, since barely anyone is still here from back then.

Half of the actual questions in Resident Answers even when Strife was here were really general topics anyway - and he was a stricter moderator than Pathfinder and Jeska ever were.

Things like Banlines, and Age-Verification, Gambling bans ; Those aren't questions by residents really. Those are SL general discussion topics.

Neither do we.

If you follow RA regularly, you'll see that Ray and quite a few others have commented along these lines when things were (in their view) getting out of hand.

As big a goof-off and kidder and thread derailer as I am, there have been times when it even got too over the top for me, too.

But everyone has a different tolerance for this stuff. When Strife was actively moderating us, I think he managed to strike a pretty good balance. Since he left, things have gotten a lot looser. And when a very few threads WERE deleted, it was the wrong ones. Again, IMO.

Please, LL...could we have our General Discussion forum back? And an active and fair moderator?

In the meantime...I won't promise to limit my goofiness. But I do promise not to snipe or snip or hate on anyone. I'll try, anyway. And I agree with Trout -- despite the nutty threads, RA is still answering questions reliably and quickly. Surely we get some points for that.

The constant abuse of this forum is way past ridiculous. The general forums were taken away due to bickering and whatnot and we were lucky enough that LL made this forum available so that people with real questions pertaining to SL would still be able to get helpful answers from other users. Before too long I'm sure they will take this forum away as well due to threads like this that are just chit chat about sluts or whatever.

There are many outside forums for off topic conversations available to everyone, this really isn't the place for it. I hate to see a useful forum go away due to people taking advantage of it.

Seems like to me, that WE the posters and customers who pay for this Forum have decided that we need a general forum. So if LL wants to do even more to piss off a segment of their paying customers, let them shut it down.

Zsu wins the thread BTW,

Trout didn't think it would be possible to derail it ...

And here we are discussing a serious topic.

I wasn't here back in the day, but I've been on forums and bulletin boards since before SL was in existence and the stuff that goes on here is nothing like what goes on in other forums. I underastand it was a lot worse when LL shut down the general forums. A little bickering about banlines and ageplay is not flaming. If LL can't handle the little slap fights that we have occasionally, then God help them if they ever go out on the rest of the internet.

Seriously - this forum is incredibly well-behaved in comparison to others.

I read some of the Archives. I've been to Family Barbecues and Schoolboard meetings that were more rancorous.....some of that stuff would be considered Sweet Nothings in Jersey......

Best sig I ever saw was this (though old hat probably to hardened intaweb hacks!):

"The Internet, where men are men, women are men and children are FBI agents."

try www.survivorsucks.com

LOL okay I like survivor ... I just lurk there.

That site is just MEAN. To the show's producers, to the contestants, the other posters .. some who include RL friends and family of the contestants.

Read that one for a little while and then you'll realize how Disney this forum is (or ever was) by comparison.
