If we could just get the spanish and the dutch to stop with their HIDEOUS builds--I'd be fine with any cultural differentiations.

Let's go back just a mere 100 years.

1907.

Nobody from that time, from *any* culture, would really feel a natural on the grid... not without some extensive and deep immersion, cultural cliffnotes and training.

Think about it, and how strange it would be if anyone *did*...

* * * * *

Des: Hey, Rudyard, love your books!

Rudyard Kipling: Thanks! Just getting started here.

Des: Nice fox avatar you've got there.

Rudyard Kipling: Yes, what say, it might just get me a yiff or two eh wot?

Des: You might want to try FurNation.

Rudyard Kipling: I was just there, but the fursecution from outsiders was a bit much...

* * * * *

Des: Hey buddy, what are you doing with all those linked physical prims?

Albert Michelson: It's just a physics experiment. Sod off, will you?

Des: Look, these are my sims, you can't go crashing them.

Albert Michelson: Heh, push me and I'll just come back as another alt.

Des: I don't care *how* famous you are for measuring light speed. Go away.

Albert Michelson: you'll /b/ sorry...

* * * * *

Baroness Bertha von Suttner: I want sum land do u have ne?

Des: We're booked solid, but I'll be glad to put you on the wait list!

Baroness Bertha von Suttner: Yes pls. How much u charge?

Des: Here's a rate card. I'll have a new sim along shortly!

Baroness Bertha von Suttner: can I run an escort service from my land

Des: Weeell... you can I suppose, I don't have formal rules against it. The last person who tried was very disappointed, our community isn't really into that.

Baroness Bertha von Suttner: I have a stalker, he comes around and my bf orbits him. can u ban him?

Des: The bf or the stalker?

Baroness Bertha von Suttner: maybe both it's been a long difficult week

Des: I'll be in touch soon, Lady Suttner.

Baroness Bertha von Suttner: kthx

Baroness Bertha von Suttner: bye

Welcome to the dawn of a new culture.

Bit of a shame that, isnt it Brad? I mean, here we are on a Brave New World and we have all the hang-ups culturally and otherwise that we had in the real one. :)

It's funny really, these days being proud of your country, what you are, and your heritage... seems to make you racist and is most certainly not very PC.

I don't see that, Broccoli. We should all be proud of our respective heritages. It's when that pride gets turned around and we start NOT appreciating the other person's heritage that we run into trouble.

Good example: "I'm proud to be a citizen of the United States. We've accomplished so much, and given the world an enduring ideal of human freedom".

Bad example: "The United States is the greatest d**n country in the world. Anybody who says otherwise is a filthy commie punk and should be taken out and shot."

I have to challenge that, we all have different senses of aesthetics.

Tying it to a specific national or racial group is ... racist.

Well thats pretty much the core of it.

Most of the resentment against the US on the forums is just a carry over from an Unpopular War in which the US is seen as a bad guy.

Most seem to have very short memories of their countries own conflicts and how their country could have been seen as the bad guy.

Unless the US administration and the Congress have Avatars that are active on the forums, I imagine very few people who post here have much to do with the undeclared war in Iraq.

It should not be surprising however when someone makes an anti-american comment because they dislike US policy that Americans feel slighted. The person making the anti-american comment was hoping for just that reaction after all.

Not a shame at all. I embrace our diversity. I hope peace doesn't come by everyone becoming the same. It should come when we all learn to respect the differences we all have.

Relatively speaking - the internet is still phenomenally new. 'Browsing the web' didn't even become mainstream until the late 90's.

In ten years, we're *already* starting to see inter-cultural communication explode. The amount of information available, and the scope of people I can communicate with today vs. when I was in High School is mind-numbing.

Providing we don't blow each other up first, the next hundred years are going to get very, very interesting. I don't think we'll see a one-world government in my lifetime, nor even a one-world culture. But in my grandchildren or great-grandchildren's lifetime.... perhaps :)

I'm glad we won't see a world government in my lifetime. And there will not BE my grandchildren to see that either. New World Order? No one to voice dissent?

No thanks!

Anyway, perhaps if there were fewer people looking to take offence, give offence or simply troll ... we'd all get along better :)

speaking of intolerance

i wonder what it is people have against those who chose to deck out their avas. this is a virtual world and one can choose how one looks. it always baffles me how some can judge others strictly by looks, in a virtual world without getting to know that person. that is the ultimate cultural arrogance.

and yes i'm a "barbie"

I think a one world government will be possible in my great grand children's time. New World Order implies control to me. That would be scary, but I think it's damn hard to control the entire population of a planet. I would expect a world government to be something more like the original concept of the U.S. States operating independently with the country only there to ensure the most basic rights. Of course, we all know that didn't last long, so maybe it's a scary idea after all.

More than a few people have no concept of the difference between patriotism and nationalism.
Many think themselves to be patriotic, while to the outsider they simply look like rabid nationalists.
The best thing to do with a nationalist is to shoot them as soon as possible. It's fast and it stops them from starting wars, imprisoning people they don't like the look of, and generally creating misery for others.

Yes, I am starting to notice these more so of late.

To a certain extent this will happen due to the gutless trend towards political correctness. Mind you there's a big difference between speaking your mind and standing up for your values whether they be cultural, religious, political, etc., and just out and out being an asshole. I loathe the thought of a single one-world society of lemmings all mindlessly playing follow the leader. The positive beauty of diversity far outweighs the negative.

This is what people do without realizing they're doing it. It's an ingrained part of the social behavior we experience day to day.

Yes, it's already happening to an extent. People bend and break to peer pressure far too often, whether it be the need to feel accepted, or just wanting to be a part of the big "in-crowd".

Absolutely.

No, see above.

This is a huge problem even among those who's native language is english. Words can have different meanings, and attitudes are hard to decipher in text, there is no body language to read, no vocal nuances to pick up on. I began learning the english language around 8 or 9 years of age and I still have trouble with it in various aspects. The best way to help those who need it is just be blunt and say what you mean. There's no need to beat around the bush when there is a language barrier to overcome; it only makes things that much more difficult.

We pretty much have that already. It's called common sense behavior. Do unto others... etc. People seem to forget that it's really a matter of just behaving in a respectable manner. The anonymity of the internet tends to bring out the worst in people because they don't fear any real-world implications of their actions.

So basically kill the Nationalists so they wont kill people ..

Thus preventing wars ..

Except against the Nationalists you are trying to kill ..

------------

Interesting use of logic so circular it could be called loopy.

------------

Id have to disagree,

The best way to deal with aggressive Nationalists is to keep them from gaining political power through an open exchange of political ideas and a fair election system.

I won't stop, or denigrate, anyone who wants to look like a Barbie clone ... I just choose not to look like that myself.

I see very few people with a 'fuller figure' in SL, for one. Nor many "non suntanned or bleached white" skins. Heck, even rarer are disabled avatars.

I can see people wanting to reach what they consider 'perfection' ... but what is "perfect", after all? Ask 1000 people and you'll get 1000 answers.

Well, perhaps not at *any* given time: sometimes more, sometimes less. Probably timezone is the next Nationalism. Rather than being Luddites, the Flat Earth Society may just have been ahead of its time. ;)
