While I'm certain that many people would have a good chuckle at my expense about the marital problems I currently find myself in, I posted this question as a query into the possibilities of when and how this situation could have happened. If you have something to offer other than criticism on my character or valuative jugements on my marriage I'd love to hear it. I'm really looking for more technology related answers. I already have friends with whom I can talk about my relational issues.

here's a possibility to consider: if he, too, is in SL, has he ever gifted you with an item which you never take off? possibly scripted with a device that records and IMs the chat to him...

People who reveal personal information about their personal lives (as you did in your initial post) should know that they opened the door to others offering opinions on, not only the how, but the WHY.

You told us you thought the Linden Lab servers or Second Life have been hacked because you recieved chat logs of your doings while in the game. You've been told several times that that is very unlikely. You've also been adviced of several other ways your husband could have gotten hold of your chat logs. Your continuing to keep this thread alive with subseqent postings implies you have not recieved enough information to satisfy you. So now it seems there is nothing more constructive to comment on........and the "judgemental" or opinions about your personal life are cropping up. You opened that can of worms. Your question has been answered...........stop reading if you are offended. There is little less to talk about in this thread.

considering that most people don't bother with IM if "there's no one around" it's pretty much all that's needed in most cases.

One of the great wonders of crypted ims is that LL's IM log is scrambled, wich means i can tell you anything i want, not only you have no proofs but I can't even be ARed for it.

Turn about is not fair play. Foul play is foul play, regardless of who's doing it.

Monitoring chat remotely, without the knowledge and consent of those being monitored, is against the Terms of Service.

AR your SL partner, de-partner him, mute him, and move on.

It would take a world-class hacker to pull the chat/IM logs from LL.

It wouild take dramatically less ability to get this info from your computer, your network, or your friends. Or as an alt you don't suspect.

The easiest trick is finding your deleted files, even if you've emptied the trash. Things get harder after that, and in general only feasible without serious ability if he's instrumented your computer or your home network.

Do you have a good idea which people he's recorded your IMs from?

Do you use a different computer at work, or is it the same one (laptop)?

It would not be difficult for someone to build an SL client that logs your chats and IMs in a secret place and replace your SL viewer with it, if that person has access to your computer. This is way, way, way easier than hacking LL's logs. I could do this easily, I wouldn't know where to begin trying to hack LL's logs. Even if I knew how to thwart their security, I wouldn't know where to look in their filesystems!

Another option would be an "inside job", if he's friendly with an SL employee who has access to the logs. And if that friend is willing to face a prison term.

BTW, while chat can be logged by a scripted object, IMs cannot, at least, not without cooperation with some nonstandard viewer.

I wonder why you guys decided that so strongly? Is it because of the sheer volume of fixed issues? Or because they never disclose them afterward?

Many breeches are due to social engineering attacks, in which the employee is an unwitting accomplice. Things like "Hey, this is Philip, could you please email me so-and-so's chat log?" So an inside job doesn't necessarily imply a malicious employee.

I'm not sure whether a prison term would even be involved if it were deliberate, unless it was done for theft or other illegal purposes.

Because if it was actually practical someone in Something Awful or 4Chan would have done it and splashed it all over the net years ago.
