Do you think this will seriously threaten SL?

I'm not sure how. I basically couldn't exist, and wouldn't find anything to spend money on in that whitewashed neighborhood.

The biggest thing threatening SL's future is LL. Specifically, their poor decision making and the way they treat their customers.

i think that 'competition' is exactly what a lot of us fear sl will become!

and i think someone needs to mention things such as schoolgirl porn, tentacle porn, bukkake, and scat to the nerd that is suggesting the japanese are somehow more pure and innocent...

No.

Content creation sounds extremely limited if it's even possible.

From: someone
"In ''meet-me,'' players' avatars, or computer-generated alter-egos, are rounder and softer, more like the cuddly characters of ''Pokemon'' than the angular and relatively realistic avatars of ''Second Life.''"

It just looks like a place to socialise for kids.

The lack of adult content would also limit its growth in my opinion. Adults have more disposable income than kids, and occasionally want to experience adult (not necessarily pornographic) themes. Withdraw those themes and they'll withdraw their dollars.

Have to agree with you.

I'm not sure either that this poses any real type of threat to SL, because let's face it, without the more "adventurous" side of a virtual world, nobody would play it. If they are trying to target a younger age group, and/or a different demographic of users all together, more power to them. Anyone who would play that game has already been long gone from SL.

*shrugs* Just my $2L

Tentacle porn? I must lead a very sheltered life, a bit like these mythical Japanese people.

Quoted from the linked article

From: someone
Japanese are so well-behaved and conformist, he says, they would prefer a more predictable and secure virtual environment over the free-spirited anything-goes of ''Second Life,'' created by San Francisco-based Linden Lab.

ROFLMAO!!!!!!!!!!

Orrly?

Has the idiot that wrote that article looked at the pron comming out of Japan? Umm....anime/hentai anyone?

That hournalist is delutional, or just plain blind (maybe stupid). Japan has just as many perverts as the rest of the world.

In short, the article is like most news. Full of sh**.

I've known numerous japanese people since i was six, conformists is not a word I would use to describe them.

So who's starting the pool for how long the first prim willy shows up in "meet-me"?

I got $L50 on 3 minutes.

No it won't seriously threaten SL. The designers of 'meet me' totally missed the point.

Rounded characters? Reminds me of those avatars on the Wii game. Especially the ones without legs! LoL

lol@ The Japanese comment. You can`t just group people like that. Aren`t alot of the Japanese into poo porn and such lol Humans are still humans regardless their ethnicity.

I will say though, every single japanese person I have run into on SL I always walked away saying "Wow, they were very nice to deal with"... Cant say that about other people i`ve came in contact with.

From: someone

Hoping for a million users in its first year, Hamaoka is in talks with dozens of companies, including Shibuya retailers, to set up shop in ''meet-me.''

Well that sucks, user created content is really what is going to keep people in SL, I think. I know it keeps me here. I`m not interested inbuying RL branded clothing in a virtual world.

From: someone

The operation and design of ''meet-me'' will be strictly controlled by Transcosmos, ensuring law and order and far more policing and filtering to ban profanity than in ''Second Life,'' which only recently outlawed gambling and is grappling with violations.
This sucks as well. I like that sl *is* "Free-spirited" i don`t want to feel controlled and moderated.

This game will probably be very well crafted. But no freedom to create and sell.....and i have to question how individual freedom is going to be in the game (Ive been involved in some heavily moderated group places where the persons moderating are powerfreaks who piss everyone off who doesnt "comform" to their ways, and though they are calling the japanese "conformists" there still needs to be a line drawn. Theres a difference between conforming to a set of rules, vs conforming to some powerfreak trying to control you)

Bring on the competition! The more there is the better SL will become! Or the more it will collapse.

I wouldn't be against a VR without the sleaze factor as long as that's how it was promoted. It really doesn't impact me in SL though. I'm not for it or against it, just no interest in it. I have no interest in being any kind of cute pokemon like creature.

Please don't say Pokemon. I come to this forum to have a minute's peace from my son's neverending obsession with Pikachu and his posse. I've spent a sim's worth of tier on Pokemon crap in the last week alone. :)

Tentacle porn?

/me turns and looks at his trapped victim. his back mounted tentacles slither ominously as he flicks his head, flinging his wild and writhing locks away from his eyes while his tongue flicks snakelike from his mouth malevalently.....

Hmmm, maybe this would be broadly offensive if I go on.
