I'm building at 760 and just to see what was outside my myopic 96m I turned up to 512. I was disturbed mightily by the horrors revealed and I personally will just slap 96m back on when I am done.
However, there's no guarantee that others are running 96m or 64m so in the interests of research (and build direction/wall heights v sky visibility to minimise said horrors). What draw distance do you have?

Usually at 288. Though sometimes I'll turn it up to 512 for a day or so....for no apparent reason.

64, because on my crappy graphic adapter that puts enough load on the poor thing as it is. Would love to put it higher but I am affraid the machine won't survive Greetings, Marcel

I put down 512 which is what I have my draw distance set at when I'm building as I tend to build on the larger scale. Then again I spend most of my time in an uncluttered island sim. I drop my draw distance to 256, 192 or 128 whenever I'm elsewhere depending on how clogged-up the region is. 512 on the mainland or in a texture-laden mall sim is quagmire hell. Having used the longer draw distances for a long time has made me deeply cynical... the sky in SL is full of trash and tacky skyboxes that countless residents think they can hide 'up there'. Hah! Now I know why my first attempts at building a sky village in SL were met with skepticism.

I used to have 512 when I had private island too though ... the first private island anyway. The covenant there was very strict, so 512 was 512 of eye candy all the way.

Usually 96 to 128.
But it can be a treat to turn it up to 512 in a place like Caledon or Dreamland.
Pass on most mainland Sims

My old dinosaur can handle 516 but I normally run at about 256m and have no problems at that.
I really don't need to see further than that.

96-128 generally. 256 if I just want to sit and look at something. I went to 512 once. Once.

I hook up via one of two computers. One is all-singing, all-dancing quad-core, the other is about 4 years old. On old computer - Draw distance 64m (minimum) On new computer - Draw distance normally 256m - more in open spaces and I vary if for snapshots. It works well in many places at 512m but more prone to struggling. When I'm on the OpenSim Standalone island I always use full 512m with no problems. I use old comp about 60% of time and new one 40% - because of competing demands between my RL agency and other RLs who do wargaming and stuff like that!

512m most of the time, sometimes I drop it down to 256 if there's a lot going on in the sim and I need to crash less

For my main system I usually keep it at 512 now, but my secondary isn't as powerful so I tend to keep that at 128 or less, depending on where I am. As Builder I need to be aware of a large area around me.
The aestetics of the view certainly can change that, however. If I am roleplaying, or interacting mostly indoors, I may turn my draw distance down as far as 64.
I find it rather annoying that at a draw distance of 512, standing on a 61 M elevation plateau, I can still clearly see a sky build that is a full 700 M above me. That *should* be culled from my view, but it isn't, unless I reduce my draw distance.
Fortunately, in my home sim, those whose sky builds are at lower elevations do strive to make them pleasing to look at, and not mere floating cubes and boxes.

While my computer can handle 512 without any significant issues, one look at the stuff that shows up when I go there and I drop it right back down again. I normally run at 128 with occasional bumps to 256. When I visited Caledon I cranked it up and loved it. While shopping or at busy clubs, I drop to 64.

I generally run at 128 day-to-day. I go down to 64 in enclosed and/or laggy places.
I can go up to 512 without problems if the ensuing lag level is tolerable. I find it wonderful to see an eclectic spread of builds on the screen. Nice ones, awful ones, gorgeous ones. Some skybuilds can be particularly wonderful and idiosyncratic.
BUT: I find that with the new RCs and Windlight I am forced to try and use as high as (im)possible a draw distance when flying about. The old clients just went into an indistinct fog outside of the distance. With the RC, the sections outside the distance are now rendered in clear sparkling water. As I move, the water gets replace by land and buildings. It's absolutely awful. It's totally unnatural (which is saying something when we're talking about SL!). It wrecks my head.

64 typically, since that is about what the laptop handles with most areas, though after a recent tune-up, I have found 96 to 128 to be generally tolerable, especially on scenic horse rides.

I used to run it at 64m on the desktop an 96m on the lappy. With the new desktop, that one is now usually at 128, though I will go 256 (or higher) from time to time for piccies an stuff.

64 to 96 most of the time simply because with WindLight I can stand on my deck and see beautiful water instead of the crappy mainland commercial *!@#! that surrounds me. I do hack the ‘panel_preferences_graphics1.xml' to extend my draw distance to 1024 or even 2048. It will lag the hell out of my computer, but it’s still cool to stand on one end of a sim and zoom to the other end

While my PC can handle 512 without a problem...I usually keep it between a28 and 250 depending on where I am....lag issues in larger busy areas mean lower draw distance if I want everything stable and smooth enough to move around. If I'm doing a photo shoot I adjust my draw to include whatever ditance I need for the shot. With windlight I often am looking for just good sea and sky effect so the draw doesn't matter..... but if I want to go drive my motorcycle around Sturgis or ride my horse at AKK I'll increase my draw. It all depends on where I am...what I want to see...or not. lol

I usually keep mine anywhere from 96 to 128, simply because I don't hate my computer /that/ much In RC having the water replace the land is a bit confusing, but I'll manage.

depends. 128 is my daily walk-around setting. 64 if i'm getting laggy, and 256-512 if i'm working in my sky workshop so i can move the camera all over.

I keep mine at 64. I have an older machine, and it's what I'm used to. (And when I'm in my skybox, it lets me pretend I'm alone up there. It's always kind of weird when I log in on my husband's machine, with his higher draw distance, and see the other stuff floating around up there. Every now and then, I'll bump it up if I want to see something farther off, but I usually bring it back down before I go hopping around again. It just occurred to me - I'm nearsighted in RL too. Wonder if that's significant... lol

Did you know 64 is NOT the minimum? It's just the lowest you can set in preferences... On a weaker laptop I got double the FPS by setting my draw to 50. Just go into Debug Settings and set RenderFarClip to what you want. (Conversely, I just won first place in a photo contest with a photo I took with my draw distance set to 600.) Usually now I "live" around 100ish...

my draw distance is as long as the paper and my arms, however if the paper was big enough I could stretch a bit and increase the draw distance
