Bad news of the day: They're thinking of merging the Teen Grid into the main one

Teens are not the problem to the merger, it's overbearing anti-sex brigades, who will look for any opportunity to keep sex out of pulic life, even virtual public life. Merging the grids means LL is effectively banning sexual activity of any type in SL. It would mean LL had decided to cut bait with a good portion of older residence, in order to go more 'mainstream', something they have admitted to wanting to do. RL business groups and educational facilities run from sexual association like the plague. SL has recieved alot of press as being sex friendly. If LL merges the grids, know that reversing that image and shutting down the SL sex industry is the primary reason.

Will merging save LL money? No, as too many come to SL for sex and adult relationships that include sex (partnered folks playing house, etc). Getting rid of the sex and bringing in the teen grid would make them money in the long haul, going mainstream, BUT ONLY IF THEY COULD SHED THEIR OLD IMAGE. Frankly it could go either way.

However, considering the adult grid if far bigger and has far more paying customers, I'd advise dismantling the teen grid totally, and starting a fresh, new service, with a new name, 'from the people who brought you Second Life', open to teens and adults, but with firm content and behavioral restrictions. The Second Life brand is so tainted by its former press, that starting anew, with only small ties linking the two products would suffice. Kill the adult grid, when it makes money, to take a risk on something so uncertain, at an economically uncertain time, is gambling.

Oh brother, what does an adult have in common with a TEEN?

Just wait till the first lawsuit is filed by a parent after their teen is either lured somewhere or kidnapped after meeting and chatting it up with a nice stranger who was a pedo looking for a victim.

"Merging the grids means LL is effectively banning sexual activity of any type in SL."

People keep saying that, but I don't understand why. "Merging the grids" doesn't mean "Teens can go anywhere they want."

yes it does, they have been posted in this thread over and over again

Because several of the legal protections LL and the content owners/users in SL enjoy right now go poof the second they allow anyone onto the main grid.

You mean like the MySpace lawsuit that was dismissed?

That case is interesting. On the one hand, the girl involved did lie about her age, and was underage according to MySpace rules. On the other hand, being underage meant she was 13 while MySpace has a minimum age of only 14.

I don't think that's the question that was really being asked, so let me rephrase it: The question is why does "allow anyone onto the main grid" mean "allow anyone anywhere in the main grid", as opposed to, for example, "allowing anyone onto PG areas of the main grid, after fixing things to insulate the PG areas".

Because there is no longer a blanket of protection, you can still have kids accessing areas they shouldn't by lying.

But there is no longer the protection of them not supposed to be on the grid.

In the myspace case you listed, if the minimum age was 12. And the girl lied about her age being 18. The lawsuit could easily still have stuck. Because she was of legal age to use the service.

That is the protection that would be lost, and why the grid will wind up sanitized for the viewing public.

Reality is: now the grid is supposed to be adults only. As such anyone here underage is here illegally through fraud. And should be reported as such, and removed from the gird. There is the protection from lawsuits against LL and the current residents - The innocent little spawn should not have been on the grid in the first place

There are supposed to be no children on the grid, adults are therefore safe legally to assume and operate as if anyone they meet on the grid is over the age of 18.

The same reasoning for the tossing of the myspace lawsuit applies to any lawsuits that are brought up.

Now if the grid allows a child on it, then there is no such assumption (little billy can say I just clicked the wrong year in the drop down... which is all that is legally required, but leaves LL and the residents swinging in the wind without any protection from lawsuits) as it is legal for them to be on the grid so the saftey of it being an adult only intended service is removed.

One of the key things is LL's rapid response to underage ARs... it's heavy handed and a P.I.T.A. for many, but is why the grid is safe from the lawsuits and such.

You can't be accused of seeking to find a kid online, in a pure adult only service.

A mixed grid, you can be accused and ruined at will for it.

That wasn't the main basis of the decision. The main basis of the decision was the Communications Decency Act provision that bars internet publishers from being held liable for third-party content, in this case the girl's profile and the exchange of information between her and the criminal. Although the appeals court decision does touch on the fact that the girl lied, it was more in the context of the argument that MySpace should have used age verification software.

The original decision states that in addition to the immunity under the CDA, MySpace has no duty to protect her under Texas law. The girl's lie gets mentioned here, but only in a minor way. The court cites another case, having nothing to do with underage participants, where the basic decision was that the service provider isn't responsible for the harmful acts of its users.

I should have state in my original reference to this case that I wasn't asserting that this is conclusive, merely enlightening. There are technical differences between MySpace and SL that raises questions as to whether SL is entitled to the same immunity under the CDA.

The core question is still whether LL has any responsibility to keep minors away from adults. They do have a responsibility to keep minors away from so-called harmful materials (i.e., pornography or obscenity) that they create, but I'm not sure what their responsibility is with regard to otherwise legal pornography created by their users. However, if they fix the problem with being able to see into mature sims from PG sims, then I don't know of any case that suggests they have any responsibility to keep underage users and adults from socializing on the PG sims.

The only thing *I* am worried about is LL going the IMVU way and hammering down the mature content in the name of protecting the kiddies.

Which would mean SL's population would soon look like IMVU's, and become mostly pre-teens and teens. And that would tend to run counter to their strategy of having big herd of sheople with lots of money to spend that they point to as a userbase to get Big Business to finally buy in to SL on a grand scale. Pre-teens and teens spend money, but not nearly as much or as freely as adults.

Limit X rated content to private islands with adult verification turned on, fix all the software issues that have been raised, and either solve the adult verification problems for non-US residents or write them off as customers until a solution is available.

Agreed.

I think a lot of this argument will be narrowed down once LL has figured this out and presented their "road map". We don't know if LL is going to let teens all over the grid, only on PG sims, only on a few little regions, or if there will be no grid merge at all...
LL has done a lot of little hinting at a grid merge for a long time now. I just wish there was a more official word on it (soon? later? never? how?).

Basically, turn most of the main grid into the Teen Grid.

Considering the rousing success the Teen Grid is, that doesn't seem like a sound business decision.

Who decides whats x-rated? Your idea of X may be a lot different than mine? Is simply being topless or naked X? No not at all. But you disagree?

Now some of those places with those functional dogs or horses may be, but see, NOW I'M judging. to them it may seem all normal.
So the question is, WHO decides whats x rated?

"Adult Verification" does not work. Read that again: IT DOES NOT WORK. It can not keep a non-verified person from seeing and interacting with virtually everything and everyone on a parcel. Even when it "works" exactly as intended, it only prevents physical access to the first 50M of altitude above the terrain mesh, and does nothing to stop camming in, clicking, or chatting. A "kid on the grid" has virtually unlimited access to XXX material, and there is NO mechanism in SL today to prevent them from accessing it.

In the entire time SL has been around, one of the most asked-for features has been real privacy - walls that actually function as walls - areas that you can protect so only authorized people can get any data about what is happening inside that protected volume of space. And LL hasn't come close to giving us a solution.

You can NOT "age verify" a private sim, unless you are willing to allow full and unrestricted access to anyone who DOES meet the "age verification" requirement. It can't be used in conjunction with ANY approved access list. Yes, without age verification, you can use a group list to lock down your sim to only a short list of people that you have chosen to trust. But LL will not even ALLOW you to know if any of those people have age-verified or not! There is no profile flag, and no scripted calls, that allow you to test for age verification. The ONLY way you can determine if someone is age-verified is to demand that they walk through a small age-verified parcel, on the ground, and VISUALLY determine if they could do it or not.

It is pathetically easy for anyone to falsely obtain "age verified" status. Residents have proven this repeatedly.

Before LL considers allowing minors on a grid full of adult XXX content, they MUST demonstrate that they can prevent those minors from having ANY access to that XXX content. They must demonstrate that they have provided tools to land owners that actually ensure even as much privacy as a rice paper wall would in real life. And they can NOT demonstrate that now.

Existing Mainland property owners in Mature sims bought their land with the understanding that it was 100% approved for them to be able to use and enjoy XXX content on that land. That are NOT going to be the least bit willing to sell their mainland parcels at a severe financial loss and go live on private sims, just to have the XXX content that is legal today. Most of them own mainland because they have rejected the choice of living on private island sims, and having any other Resident as their landlord. Those people will NOT willingly pack up and move to private islands, any more than most real-world land-owners would willingly turn in their mortgage or the deed to their land, in exchange for apartment-style leases that go through a third party.

Saying "Oh, well we will just limit XXX content to locked down private sims." is as naive and short-sighted as saying you'll just pass a law in Real Life that says guns, or pets, or alcohol, or any other items that are legal today can only be owned and enjoyed in locked rooms on offshore platforms, and that they must be removed from all the cities and rural areas where they are legal today. Who is going to compensate the landowners whose legal rights to use that content which you want to restrict would this be abridged? Who will pay to relocate them? Will you?

bumped for relevant thought... ;0 i've been wondering what if/any i should do in relations to the possible/probable future of sl. there's not much to keep a kid out out of a possibly prono website... so i don't know exactly what i should prepare for.

they are looking way farther than that down the road..

and their aim i don't feel is big business but education and family use or a place they feel they could come..
but we're all guessing right now anyways.
