"Are store owners really that rude?"
How much time do you have?
First off, it wasn't your place and you had no right to correct anyone.
With this said, all I'll say is you ain't seen nothing yet. Many are greedy and paranoid and won't hesitate to beat you out one lousy linden if they can. They'll knowingly sell you badly made items and won't bother to respond when you ask for an exchange or refund afterwards.
On the other hand you do find a few who are decent, sell good products and will respond if called on.
But don't take my word for it. Just keep shopping and you'll see for yourself.
You've been warned.

Thank you to everyone who responded and you have all given me something to think about. I can't answer everyone individually, but I wanted to say that each of you gave me some food for thought and I am definitely going to be more aware of what I do/say from now on.

From: Cherry Czervik Yeah but FD, whatever perms are set are irrelevant against Copybot anyway I understand. I do make my own stuff - I just found the fabric texture absolutely ideal lol Yeah I understand. Certain type of fabric is really hard to pull off. Took me forever to figure out how to do Damask once but for life of me I can't figure out poses or other things essential for furniture. When my friend and I were experimenting with jewels painted in clothing layers she was given hard time by this instructor who didn't think she do textured jewelery. Her pearls she does in her clothing layer are beautiful. Anyone knows my friend Auroaskye and her designs knows how hard she works, is really talented but incredibly insecure about her work because few people buy or notice her work. I had to really encourage her to sell her hand drawn dresses more because she so gifted now she is doing animated dresses but very few of her dresses sale. I even briefly paid for space in Etopia so she could have place to be seen by others more but we couldn't afford to keep the place going. Some people aren't aware of how judgmental they sound hope I didn't come off sounding like that either it wasn't my intention.

From: Wildefire Walcott That drives me up the wall. There are some big-name people who do that, too. Mmmhmm. This store owner is very well known and from 2004. I'd expect better - perhaps she thought I was a newb. On the subject of spelling, I try not to be influenced if I see something badly written but I do have to fight it. I have to proof read and correct a lot of things at work (including website copy directly and for clients on the sites they have control over and I can't get in there and change). I've had to force myself to address what I know is a prejudice - after all, something could be painted beautifully or coded like a demon by someone who is dyslexic. Even so, my gut instinct is that if someone was concerned about perfectionism they'd extend that to the way their product was advertised as there's always going to be someone who can help out with language things (I've helped out friends with their copy many times).

This sums up a lot of what I was thinking, but due to a lot of good answers and input here I am trying to change my mind-set. Cherry, how does a newbie protect themselves from this happening? You mentioned that the person you bought the furniture from perhaps mistook you for a newbie. I feel like I am harping on this point, but I really don't want it to happen again (first with finding out I had bought a stolen skin in a newbie helper box and now this situation.)

i often make spelling mistakes .. either due to typing too fast.. inattention ... or just because i am not a native speaker... i sometimes spot them myself .. but am glad when others point it out to me.. there are tons of great shopkeepers on SL .. its just that, unfortunately we tend to remember the not so nice ones more.

When I am lagging everything comes out badly spelling wise but with my artwork I am perfectionist but it doesn't always means it comes out perfect. Sometimes my brain can only hold so much before it shuts down. Usually I get friends to check spelling but often it's after the fact, sometimes it is pain when I am really broke to have to spend more money for upload for item that may never sell. When something is misspelled and I am having a bad week, or not feeling well and friend points it out I confess sometimes get very cranky even though I know they are well intentioned but I have never muted any friends over it...but I have pouted a bit over it

From: Yummy Freelunch Maybe we should all dress in potato sacks and have two black teeth in the front, barefoot and go into her store. And wear paper bags over our heads. (Think I've seen them as freebies and went to a class to learn to make them). Course that wouldn't display the nice black teeth...but another "look" for our new "wardrobe."

From: Lydia Diavolo So thanks to everyone who gave me information about where to go shopping for clothing and where the skin I was wearing actually came from.
One question, I saw something on a store owners profile that was glaringly misspelled. I mean really misspelled. I wrote her a message correcting the spelling and then I guess I worded it poorly, so she sent me some nasty messages back. The main one being that I am muted and banned from her stores?!?!?!
So, for my first little while on SL, I end up getting a stolen skin, and now I am muted and banned from a store? (I didn't like her clothes anyway and never would have bought them but still she did not have to go off on me like I was trying to be rude, all I was trying to do was let her know that something was spelled wrong. I thought if someone is running a business, they may want to have everything spelled correctly.)
Maybe this (SL) isn't for me. Worded poorly? You criticise her/his work here.. I can just imagine how that IM went. BTW: we had something here in Florida regarding a misspelled word on a banner for an A rated school... Everyone makes mistakes.

That business owner overreacted. In Second Life, you'll have to get used to the fact that there are business owners here that do not conduct themselves in a professional manner. Having the creativity to make marketable items in SL does not equate into having the social skills, or experience in a service or retail goods industry necessary to conduct oneself in a professional manner with one's customers and potential customers and you can expect to encounter people lacking in these areas who are running their own SL business. Unlike that particular business owner you may come across another store where you actually like the products so in general I recommend you tread lightly in being critical about any aspect of the business even if it's meant to be constructive unless it's relevant to an actual issue you are having with one of their products. Because a lot of business owners in SL have no real life business experience in retail or services, coupled with the fact that English is a second language for many residents, you shouldn't be quick to equate mispellings in products or advertisements etc. with poor product.

From: Avion Raymaker In my opinion, a criticism like this is better left unsaid if you're not acquainted with the owner, but if you absolutely have to make it, it should be done in the nicest way.
Many SL residents might not understand the plight of a business owner. I love SL, but in order for me to log in, I have to psych myself up, have a nice belt of whiskey, hit the "connect" button, and then suffer the immediate onslaught of sometimes over a dozen IMs. Everything from "can you paint my walls" to "Hi" to "There you are: what are you up to?" Each and every one of these people is someone I care about very much, too.
But if, during that onslaught, one of my new action items became "Fix your mispelled sign, stupid," well, I'm not going to ban you, and I'll probably even thank you politely, but you get the idea of what it felt like to get that well-meaning criticism. I can understand your point, but as a sole proprietor in real life, guess what? The pressure is generally more intense, I can't turn off the cell phone, and being grumpy to anyone but your wife can have unintended consequences. With my wife, I know the consequences, so that leaves the dogs, as long as you don't mind the teeth and all that. I think part of the problem is that some people in SL are running a business and also in SL having 'fun' and can't separate the two (as you have to in RL). So they do the business thing and then get upset when they get what we in real business would consider minor and normal. Abrupt becomes 'rude'. Oh, well, then they better keep it in SL, because they aren't close to ready for what you get in RL small business. (That said, there is a small fleet of RL tow trucks in my area that hauls 'foriegn' cars - on both sides of every truck.)

The way I look at it is this - if someone BOTHERS enough to talk to me about a problem on my land (I actually had someone spot a FLICKERER in a small corner of my store, sheesh I hate them), I AM GRATEFUL.
Because that person cares enough to actually get a hold of me and point out something that needs fixing...
So if you come to my store and want a chat - I try and have staff there most of the time - if not I'll be there myself. If no one is there...Sorry - !
