Are store owners really that rude?

So thanks to everyone who gave me information about where to go shopping for clothing and where the skin I was wearing actually came from.

One question, I saw something on a store owners profile that was glaringly misspelled. I mean really misspelled. I wrote her a message correcting the spelling and then I guess I worded it poorly, so she sent me some nasty messages back. The main one being that I am muted and banned from her stores?!?!?!

So, for my first little while on SL, I end up getting a stolen skin, and now I am muted and banned from a store? (I didn't like her clothes anyway and never would have bought them but still she did not have to go off on me like I was trying to be rude, all I was trying to do was let her know that something was spelled wrong. I thought if someone is running a business, they may want to have everything spelled correctly.)

Maybe this (SL) isn't for me.

Well I'll answer the question in your thread title. No. "Store owners" are not always rude.

However "People" can be rude. It's human nature.

Bottom line is you were critisizing someone when it wasn't requested. That in itself could be considered to be rude. Some people don't take critisism well.

Personally I appreciate it when people IM me to inform me of mistakes as would the majority of people, but you allways run the risk of offending people when offering a critique that wasn't requested.

I think this is probably a good thing. Imagine if you had purchased a product and there was a problem...sounds like you would have had a nightmare getting any support.

Ugh... Maybe that's why I don't IM strangers so much. (T_T)

Well... Nasty people are nasty people and moreso online because you can't reach across the internet and slap them. Please don't let this person be the representative of the SL community as a whole. There are better (and worse) people to meet everywhere. The best thing to do is write the experience off as one less retard to deal with and move on. (=_=)y

Dante-very true thank you.

Porky-I agree, and yes that's true. I am thankful I didn't buy anything from there.

I wouldn't mind this person getting very upset with me, I know she didn't ask for it, and I wouldn't have been surprised with her yelling at me. But muting and banning me, I don't understand.

For me personally, if something is spelled wrong at a store or a business here or in the RL, I would not purchase from them. To me, it shows that they don't take the time with spelling, then they probably don't take the time to pay attention to detail with their products either.

Dante-I didn't take your post to be mean. ;)

I have a thick skin, I don't mind people telling me off that does not bother me. The fact that she muted and banned me is odd.

No need to edit your post Dante.

I think that is a bit of a narrow minded view to take when you consider that the standard language of SL is English yet for the majority of poeple in SL, English is a 2nd language. You should inspect the products in more detail before making a judgement IMO

I read the person's profile and looked at their products very carefully, the store owner is English. In cross referencing her profile as well, I noticed it was all written in English.

I am still new here and learning the ropes. Forgive me.

Running a business and designing content is stressful.
Some people who do it are struggling with things that others may not understand.
Their patience is low and often are grumpy group of people, not all but good percentage
of Designers I know is they only have set time for certain things and tend to be moody.
I imagine some may not have same skills or abilities of the extremely literate and educated
Residences who wander around Second Life with compulsive urge to correct grammar.
Or they are so caught up in what they need or are doing or are making things get missed, i.e spelling, ethics i.e I shouldn't resell this skin I didn't make it.
The truth is not everyone has tons of disposable income who is here, some are quite poor and think they can change their circumstances selling things here, and just like in the first life
some are willing to steal to do it.
Ethically yes we shouldn't resell stolen products, we should be polite to everyone but reality
is often this isn't the case.

I admit to horrible spelling. I try my level best and sometimes, I just don't get it correct (right?).

Usually, a person just drops me a tell, something like this: "Sorry to be a pain, but I just noticed that you have x word misspelled. It should be y." No problem, I can fix it :)

Now, if said person goes, "nOob u spel bad!" I'm going to laugh at them to their faces.

Yeah, muting and banning sounds rather extreme for either format. But, the person owns the shop and the land it's own, thus can do whatever they want. Logic doesn't need to apply ;)

Maybe they were cranky and having bad day?
Imagine yourself at the crankiest in SL and then having stranger instant message you in middle of that about something you didn't do or accuse you of something.

FD-That makes sense, thank you.

Raudf-(Love your name by the way), Thanks for your input.

I am going to relax and not correct someone's spelling anymore. I don't want to create issues for anyone and I didn't think about how doing that might affect someone.

Lesson learned and thank you to those who gave their input it is appreciated! I am still learning so this helps me tremendously!

That was kind of the response I thought I may get, however I was wrong. I can claim that.

By the way, I love your clothing, I just haven't been able to buy anything, but I am going in world later today and am going to shop!

In nearly two years, never happened to me, not that I don't do things wrong, I do and it's annoying as hell. I never have strangers IM me, they are all potential friends. :)

I have corrected spelling for other people often, sometimes in their profile, but usually in their notecards that come with products, usually it's a case of them copying and pasting and forgetting to remove the previous product name and replacing it with the one the product it comes with, no one has ever been rude back to me, occasionaly i have got a free gift out of it.

I have a family member that struggles with grammar and spelling, yet runs a business and is damned good at what he does. Because of this, I have learned not to let spelling be a factor when deciding whether to shop somewhere or not.

Muting and banning are powerful and useful tools for the responsible land owner, but try to keep in mind that for some they are a way of refusing to deal with an awkward situation - and ultimately not very meaningful. If mute and ban was available to every ill-tempered person driving a car in the real world (to choose a random example), we'd all probably be muted and banned a thousand times over by total strangers for doing nothing wrong outside of the mind of the person doing the banning. It's a frustrating, helpless feeling getting muted and banned but with a bit of perspective you'll find it really doesn't harm you at all - and in fact it spared you a (probably) equally frustrating and infinitely more time-consuming discussion with this person who doesn't appear to take even minor, helpful criticism well at all.

It's no big deal, really. The vast majority of shop owners are (in my experience) friendly and helpful, if sometimes awfully busy :)

Darion-Thank you for mentioning that, I will definitely keep that in mind when I am shopping.

Anti-Okay in my (limited) experience on SL, I had thought with her muting and banning me, it meant that I would be muted and banned from a large majority of parts of SL. Thank you for straightening me out!

I don't feel as bad now, and I am a little embarrassed that I thought I was banned and muted from a large portion of SL itself.

I have SO much to learn. :(

Honestly you do not have to do that! I didn't want to post a thread and have people feel sorry for me!

Don't give me the option of something for free...I will be in your store for hours now trying to decide amongst 10 outfits I have my eye on! YAY!

LOL no kidding! I am just going to have to buy more Lindens; if I stick around SL, I plan on owning everything from her store. :)
