Are store owners really that rude?

Darion-Thank you for mentioning that, I will definitely keep that in mind when I am shopping.

Anti-Okay in my (limited) experience on SL, I had thought with her muting and banning me, it meant that I would be muted and banned from a large majority of parts of SL. Thank you for straightening me out!

I don't feel as bad now, and I am a little embarrassed that I thought I was banned and muted from a large portion of SL itself.

I have SO much to learn. :(

Ahhh, see there's another point that I didn't think to make - in most environments (games, internet forums, chat rooms), tools with scary-sounding names like "mute" and "ban" are only given to administrators, and DO have far-reaching consequences. But here in SL, every person with a piece of land can ban, and every Tom Dick or Harry can mute. The net result in this case is: you won't be able to communicate with this one person, and you won't be able to go back to that one store. So yeah, not a big deal at all.

Don't be embarrassed though, SL is different that way as in so many other ways, and it takes some getting used to. As you've found LOL

Maybe this (SL) isn't for me.

Please don't let this experience deter you from SL. Asshats are everywhere - in RL as well on various locales on this great internet.

Mute that shop owner and move on. Customer service is apparently a concept she is unfamiliar with.

Welcome to SL and the nice people that far outnumber the idjits. (And I spelled that wrong on purpose *grins*)

Now that I know (thanks to Anti) that I am not banned from a large portion of SL, I don't think I will be going anywhere! ;)

LOL cute on the spelling, I sometimes spell it that way. ;)

I think that is a bit of a narrow minded view to take when you consider that the standard language of SL is English yet for the majority of poeple in SL, English is a 2nd language. You should inspect the products in more detail before making a judgement IMO

I don't know...I have a bit of a quirk where I often equate many things in consideration to purchase from someone. Grammar and spelling are biggies for me. They may not be to others. To each their own. I would not have contacted the vendor to advise him/her of the spelling error, but it *would* go in my "data bank" for possible future reference.

(People who are not native English speaking I cut a lot of slack for as I admire that effort.)

YMMV ;)

Now I got a message from the shop owner taking a jab at my avatar and taste, does she not realize that when one is new, we cannot afford a large wardrobe? (I have my IMs coming to my e-mail address).

I guess she wanted to make a point? I think it's laughable.

Side question-I guess I have to be in-world to mute someone?

Some people are just poor spellers, uneducated and have the inability to see friends everywhere and think every criticism is personal attack. Mute and ban is often one little power they have.
I remember talking to this one texture maker store owner and she was extremely negative, paranoid and just unpleasant to deal with was blaming everyone who was basic member for the death of her business.
I felt compassion for the person because I saw myself in her too.
I often wonder what the world would be like if we understood others as well we understood ourselves.

Maybe we should all dress in potato sacks and have two black teeth in the front, barefoot and go into her store. :p

That is hilarious! I am going to go on a search for one and take a picture, now just to find one, take a picture of it and put it as my main picture on my profile. That ought to make those who (think they are) elitist, cringe!

So thanks to everyone who gave me information about where to go shopping for clothing and where the skin I was wearing actually came from.

One question, I saw something on a store owners profile that was glaringly misspelled. I mean really misspelled. I wrote her a message correcting the spelling and then I guess I worded it poorly, so she sent me some nasty messages back. The main one being that I am muted and banned from her stores?!?!?!

So, for my first little while on SL, I end up getting a stolen skin, and now I am muted and banned from a store? (I didn't like her clothes anyway and never would have bought them but still she did not have to go off on me like I was trying to be rude, all I was trying to do was let her know that something was spelled wrong. I thought if someone is running a business, they may want to have everything spelled correctly.)

Maybe this (SL) isn't for me.

I would follow my usual way in life, if someone is nice to me i am even nicer back, but if someone is nasty or treats me with dis-respect i give them torrents of shit

this works very well in real life and all situations i have ever been in, so i'm sure it'd work online also

example: today was on the phone to BT, they have been most unhelpful in the last few weeks while moving home, but today this women was really helpful so i told her how helpful she'd been and i could tell by the tone of her voice that it made her day.

Why oh WHY can't people just be nice, life is way to short for bullies and fighting

This has definitely been a good learning experience for me.

I guess when I am not feeling grumpy and worthless content maker I am trying to understand other human beings.
It is just a hobby.
I believe every experience has lesson even when it's unpleasant one.
Some people behave like jerks often to others but often I wonder what makes them behave like jerks.
It doesn't always make me feel better though.
Thing is often its not about you.
One time I was having very bad day I had to go Doctors on way back I start to choke was having hard time coughing really bad.
Some lady I didn't know came up to me and was quite concern almost motherly told me to come with her and she get me some water to sit in front of this shop.
She went in got me some water from the Deli.
At same time this very well dressed couple came in and they were upset because the Deli clerk was helping me get some water.
As they left they were complaining about the service they had received and how they weren't being served properly.
Around them was act of generosity none of these people knew me nor did they have to help me but they did.
Sometimes things are happening we can't see.

In my opinion, a criticism like this is better left unsaid if you're not acquainted with the owner, but if you absolutely have to make it, it should be done in the nicest way.

Many SL residents might not understand the plight of a business owner. I love SL, but in order for me to log in, I have to psych myself up, have a nice belt of whiskey, hit the "connect" button, and then suffer the immediate onslaught of sometimes over a dozen IMs. Everything from "can you paint my walls" to "Hi" to "There you are: what are you up to?" Each and every one of these people is someone I care about very much, too.

But if, during that onslaught, one of my new action items became "Fix your mispelled sign, stupid," well, I'm not going to ban you, and I'll probably even thank you politely, but you get the idea of what it felt like to get that well-meaning criticism.

I didn't take it personally when I wrote a really nice complimentary notecard to someone re her antique furniture, as the stuff I bought didn't really work that well - asking if there was any chance she could at leisure and her convenience mod the wood finish and resize something, or arrange to provide modify/no trans versions of the stuff I'd bought as trans is of no interest to me. I know she accepted the notecard, but not even a word. Not even a thank you - so I'd bought the best part of 5K worth of stuff that couldn't be modified to fit with the scheme I went to her place for - and in some cases literally were too big to fit in a very substantial house.

Even a "not my policy" would have been less rude, but just being ignored completely I found unacceptably rude. Perhaps I apply my RL work ethic here and expect too much of people.

When these stores get copybots and the like, they are the first to screech "foul play". I can't and wouldn't name names here but I'm making sure my friends who like the retro look in clothes know what sort of service they will get from this 'lady'.

***edit @Avion yeah that's the other side of the coin, there's lots of fabulous store owners and vendors out there - which is what makes such rudeness as this particular case all the more shocking.

I know I've been short with people in the past, but I rarely mute them unless they continue to be a pain.

This one group came up to me once and tried to run my avatar into the water. I walked away, they laughed and called me a noob. ME? Yeesh. I seem to recall them being the pains. I've made many mistakes in my grammer with things, and always hope that someone will come along and point them out if I've missed more. Had some bad errors out there for a few days =x Lol.

Just gotta ignore people like that.. Call 'em names on your end, vent, etc, then mute them ;) I clear mutes every couple weeks to see if they ever message back again. Haven't had it, so odds are she'll soon forget about you.

Their is lovely shop I found in well known sim, name won't be mentioned where all the furniture was way, way too big but very nice.
I didn't buy anything because the furniture size.
The reason why things are no mod is because there is devices or device out there that can change anything that is modify permissions allowed.
I get that is the reason but I guess that persons products is only for very huge avatars, not for me.
Although I am sorry you had to pay 5k for items that were too big, but you can learn from the experience, you can reproduce the items by making them with your own prims size you want based on the items without using copybot.
It might take some effort on your part but it is possible.

Yeah but FD, whatever perms are set are irrelevant against Copybot anyway I understand.

I do make my own stuff - I just found the fabric texture absolutely ideal lol :)

For me personally, if something is spelled wrong at a store or a business here or in the RL, I would not purchase from them. To me, it shows that they don't take the time with spelling, then they probably don't take the time to pay attention to detail with their products either.

please don't judge the quality of someone's work, by their lack of spelling. We are all human and we all make mistakes. As mentioned some folks do not have English as their first language.

If you feel you must correct someone's spelling, do so with the knowledge that it might end up like this one was. Don't let it get to you.

If I misspelled something I would hope that someone would tell me (and they do).
I do not get upset, I am thankful.

If you decide to visit my store, while exploring SL, and see anything misspelled, please do let me know.

To answer the side question: Yes, unfortunately.

It costs nothing to be polite. Heck, I've won a few semi-hostile customers over by simply being polite, even though I really couldn't help them, both RL and SL. Being polite also doesn't mean you have to be a doormat. Just realize there's a time and place for certain behaviors and that it is neither the time nor the place.

If the person is now making fun of your taste in clothing, then it is time to go with the word of mouth and warn away your friends and their friends from this store. They've gone beyond rude right into complete childishness. No, on second thought, most children behave better.

All over a spelling error.
