I am all for remembering
but sometimes sadly 9-11 doesn't feel like remembering as much as a political statement
I have lost loved ones and that pain is no less painful that those who lost loved ones in the 9-11 attack
I remember my loved ones privately in my private memories
(and yes, I know how it feels to suddenly lose a loved one, my brother died at 29 from heart failure, he was 3 years older than me, and I missed the call and when I returned the call to my sis in law, the first words I heard were OMG (my real life name here), Kenny's dead.)
For a long time... I could not watch south park, because the character kenny almost always gets killed, and hearing the words they killed kenny would hurt.
I have a feeling, 9-11 being brought to the forefront every year, is much like that for those who lost loved ones.. a bitter reminder
I got past that though and now I can watch the show without the sting of those words
I guess what I am trying to say is... if you lost loved ones in the 9-11 attack mourn them, remember them, but don't tarnish their memories with the political side of 9-11 (sadly, for me, 9-11 screams more about politics than anything else)
to those who lost loved ones on 9-11 my condolences and may the years make it easier to bear

I was stuck in traffic on Church Street underneath the towers for an hour at about 8:50 on 9/10/01.
...yes, that's right, the morning before I had come into the city from the Staten Island end and got stuck in the morning traffic...lookin up thru my sunroof at the towers, with my Dalmatian in the passenger seat...waiting for the UPS trucks (that were parked two deep with deliveries) to move...watching a man push his hot dog cart up past the stairs to the courtard in between them...
...the morning before this happened, on my way into the city from Philly...same time, same place. One day early.
My friends lost family and friends that day, I was one step removed not only in time but also in knowing several victims.
Yet...my SL2RL boyfriend is Muslim, by birth (I was Catholic by mine, but became a Buddhist a decade ago), he's not particularly praticing, but that's his background (he's Malay).
I was in the city about a month after it happened...staying down near that area...and the smell...was still horrific. The posters of the missing were all still hanging. I'm sure those of you that live there don't need to be reminded.
I'm posting this because I think we all *seem* to agree on one thing...
It's not the religion that's the problem, it's the specific use of religion that's at fault. It's not the politics, it's the specific use of politics at fault.
Hope somehow this helps.

I was at the Ceremony yesterday, as I am every year, then visited the graves of those that I knew who were lost, then got piss drunk with some cops and firemen. I too am dismayed that people can't put politics and religion aside for a short time, not just in this case, but in all instances where remembering those who have been taken before their time.
The whys of that event are compex they have cuktural roots going back thousands of years, and politically dating back to the European Colonialism of the Middle East a 100 years ago. I rankle at those who say it was comeuppance to America for her misdeeds. No, America paid for it's share and those of all of the Western Civilizations on that day.
A lot more than a "bunch of bankers" were murdered that day. And many were heroes. Besides the Uniformed Services people, whose job it was to go in there despite the danger, but a lot of ordinary people did extraordinary things that day.You don't have to honor or remember them, but don't piss on those that wish to.
It is appalling how that tragedy has been turned into a jingoistic political football, but that is the time we live in. I am still angered that 7 years later there is still just a hole on the site, and even now that construction has officiall started, A Port Authority Drone was saying the other day that the projected 9/11/11 completion date may have to be pushed back. It only took 6 years to build the original Towers from the ground up.
*Rant over
