Actually though, I think Chris has every right to define "privacy" as "not having uninvited guests on his land". Just because alt-cammers don't bother him doesn't make his personal feelings on privacy invalid or wrong.

difference is that you don`t see it and they can`t enter, hence "privacy"

Years from now you'll be coming out of a diner in the dead of winter. It'll be cold, and your breath will be visible in the air. As you walk to your car you'll whistle a little tune. Then you'll here a voice behind you. You turn to look who it is. You don't believe your eyes! It's Science! You won't know what's hit you.

This privacy thing keeps coming up, perhaps because it matters to so many people.

Privacy is thought of as a unitary thing: Either you have it absolutely, or you have it not at all. But this is not the least bit true. There are varying levels and kinds of privacy. And this matters.

In SL, there are at least three aspects: The right not to be spied upon; the right not to be intruded upon; and the right not to be harassed. LL respects and supports most of these aspects. Using spy devices like chat loggers on people without their agreement is a TOS violation, for example. Ban lines prevent intrusion. Harassment is broadly forbidden by the TOS - LL recognizes that there are infinite ways to harass and you generally know it when you see it. You can control who may or may not know when you are online or where you are, and a stalker who ignores all that and haunts you is also ARable.

There are degrees of privacy too. Locked doors and closed windows offer some measure, because most people recognize and respect these signals one wants to be let alone. Skyboxes and out-of-the-way property make it less likely unwanted visitors will find you. Islands do the trick even better - especially if they make sure they don't show up in Search.

It is true that the zones of privacy available in SL are incomplete. The main problem is the sort of Nosy Parker camming around by other Residents so ardently embraced by opponents of privacy, which cannot be defeated under present conditions - when you enter a sim, the entire sim and everything in it downloads to your computer and therefore is at least potentially seeable. Even that can be helped a little bit even today: If you go to Client>Character>Show Look At, SL will show a set of crosshairs at every point where an avatar camera view is focused. If there are more crosshairs in your "private" place than avatars, you at least know someone is watching you, and can then act accordingly. I have a JIRA request to make it possible to identify the Resident behind the crosshairs - VWR 1807. You could then AR same. There are other JIRA proposals that would improve resistance to such spying - SVC-99 especially (and see SVC-241 for an overview of all "privacy" JIRAs).

People who have a vested interest in searchbots and/or a passion for being Peeping Toms or business spies have an interest in cultivating the idea that "there is no such thing as privacy in SL." But as you see, there is such a thing; it is merely incomplete.

Something like 95% of all Residents have a vested interest in having and improving on privacy in SL - at least from other Residents. (Lindens with God powers and RL court-issued subpoena powers are an entirely different matter.) LL has an interest too - the SL platform is seriously flawed from the point of view of many businesses if there is no way to keep out spying competitors from your confidential business meetings, and LL would do well to fix that, even if it doesn't care about the feelings and personal interests of the vast majority of its Residents.

So don't buy the bill of goods that "there is no privacy" and can never be. Both propositions are demonstrably false. Instead, push for a better SL experience - and send the busybodies off to some other place to satisfy their compulsion to snoop.

oh i did and wished it was ingame that u could toggle some setting to hide prims/avatars on land so all a person can see wich isn`t on the access list is land

That already exists in debug settings.

ctrl-alt-shift 9 takes away volume, and will remove the sight of pretty much everything on land.
ctrl-alt-shift-4 will hide avatars.

Not quite what they had in mind. They want a setting that stops OTHER PEOPLE seeing what's on their land. It's no good just you not being able to see your own house.

yes but you can`t have others do that while if there was an option to hide the land and avatars on it with an simple land option

All Forum Cartel should have be able to merge any thread that they or another Cartleite has posted on into one thread. In theory, that's already what happens anyway.
