How does SL determin the traffic for a place? for example is it how long people are there or the amount of people that tp there?

I think it's time spent in the area.. but I'm not exactly sure.

the only sure evidence we have of how traffic works is in the wiki/knowledgebase, however many many residents will argue that the info there is incorrect.

Until they update it, I take it at face value.

Kitty Barnett says she has studied this empirically and finds that
"It's not complex at all: 1 point per full minute per avie."

I've done a few small tests too, and that's exactly what I found.

Recently, a Linden (I think it was Jeska) stated that a complex formula is used, but I still go with the person minutes. It could be that Jeska's understanding is out of date.

Having just recently bought a small parcel on ML I kept track of number of Avi's and minutes for several days (only 4 people have access to this land) and I agree with Kitty Barnett when says "she has studied this empirically and finds that It's not complex at all: 1 point per full minute per avie.". :)

Traffic formula
04-25-2008 13:59
Traffic score = number of player-minutes per recent 24 hour period.

I've verified this any number of times on my own land and lots of clubs and other places with bots and campers. Also, the maximum number of avatars per sim is 100, so by this formula, the maximum traffic score possible is 24 hr x 60 minutes x 100 avatars, or 144,000 points, and you can observe the popular places get *close* to that number, but I have never seen it go over.

Sometimes the traffic numbers do not update every day. Ive seen it stay exactly the same for a couple of days (like 12,910 yesterday, and 12,910 today at the same time of day), so the 24 hour period tracked may be from a couple of days ago and not just yesterday.

And another traffic bot farm stumbles onto the grid.

there is a better way to do that then trafic, get your visitors to add your club to their picks, the more you apear in picks the higher you get in search.

Unless you're willing to put 60+ bots on your land (only possible on islands) 24/7 so you can show up in the Popular Places list, I really doubt that tweaking your traffic is going to help much. Search rankings are a lot more complicated than they used to be.

Also, if you are making changes to influence traffic, you should wait 48 hours before assessing the results. This is because the 24-hour traffic window is not tied to a certain time of day, so the only way you know if your alterations had any effect is to wait TWO days to guarantee your changes were in during the whole traffic counting period.

If you are talking about the All search, forget traffic. A few extra Picks will do just as good as traffic.

good luck ..

Sadly ..

Traffic has basically evolved into the measurement of how many Camper Bots/ Traffic Bots someone keeps on their parcel.

How does SL determin the traffic for a place?

going to go out on a limb and figure 8pin meant the "Places tab" ....

While its possible he meant "All", it does have "PLACE" in the question.

The weigth of the traffic doesn't give you any additional score (noticiable) in the new search engine (as others already mentioned). While it does help a bit with the "green dots" on the map (ppl are more attracted when they see some other (they guess) customers already in the shop), but pay attention "playing" with customers (read: fool em) because you would have the opposite effects. In example alot of ppl would NOT come into a shop with 50 avs aligned in the map.. they just hate this; so placing a fair number of camps (eg: 10) would give some help *but* you must be sure to offer then something that the customer will *really* like, because (again) if you attract ppl with numbers, as soon they'll figure it, they feels fooled, so you have to "please" em offering top quality products, otherwise you have: an angry (ex)customer than will never buy your products and probably will share around bad pubblicity about your shop, so you wasted your time (and resources) for nothing.
In short word: with or without bots and camp, if you do sh*t u'll not sell anything; if you do good things, you may hope to "survive".

Picks increasing search.

In reference to picks increasing search.
If an avatar has more than one pick in their profile(for the same parcel), does it increase search results by a larger factor?
