How many characters in your password?

Password security for the win hey.

LL does not put any particular rule on password creation like requiring a number and a non letter key or a a upper-case character, etc. So what we have here is just good old regular character's from the keyboard that we choose to use.

I myself, mix up my password with numbers, special characters and always an upper-case or 2. When i started SL i used some common password that i also used for everything on the internet. When i became more involved i changed it to 9 characters, when my involvement deepened even further, i changed it to 9 characters + special/upper-case/numbers.

My passwords for SL have been as short as 6 characters.

Of course i don't use any words from the English language or actually, any real words for that matter anymore. I make up words and then play with the word i made up until it fits something i can remember after a couple days.

I hold my SL password to be more important than my bank account password! But the bank forces you to use numbers and upper-case letters.

Should LL enforce some better password creation security to ensure people use special characters/numbers/upper-case letters?

Anyways, i am so off my original point.

How many characters is in your password?

It is a hidden poll and only Lindens can see the results - so i think it is fine.

I am not asking you if you use special characters, numbers, and upper-case or the specifics just a range of characters your password fits into.

I use a One Time Password (OTP) generator to create my passwords and they are long.
I don't bother to remember them but have all my logins stored in a PDA which encrypts the lot with strong encryption and gives me access on a 4 digit PIN. Yes the PDA is backed up, encrypted backups and the PC sync program also stores the data encrypted and demands a PIN login to access but allows me to quickly cut and paste my login passwords.
All I have to do is remember my PIN and update the PC program or PDA with a changed password and the next sync does the rest.

I decided when I got into the whole signing up to web accounts for things that my memory was far better put to use remembering real information rather than meaningless alpha-numerics so I searched for a better solution of storing my passwords. Think of my PDA/PC program as an digital password wallet that has a 4 digit combination lock on it.

I voted but I'm not saying how many characters because that would make it easier for people to guess my password :):)

Actually it's 10 characters (to an accuracy of +/- 2!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

Assuming someone has a case-sensitive password comprising 6 alpha-numeric characters, that's 62^6 (or 56, 800, 235, 584) possible combinations. I'm sure that's readily crackable -- at least assuming you don't trip some sort of security precuation if you have too many wrong guesses -- with a fast computer, but, in reality, how great a risk is it someone's going to try it?

I won't give details of my password construction methods. But I have attended pro classes on computer security, in which we used the latest hacker/cracker tools to see just how easy it was to crack a typical password. Everyone had a system on the classroom network that they were suposed to set up a password on, that they felt would be secure. One fell in less than 5 seconds, leaving that student totally shocked. Most fell in the first 5 to 15 minutes of cracking attempts. The majority of the rest took less than half an hour to crack. All but mine had been cracked in the first hour. They gave up on cracking mine after more than three hours of concentrated attack by everyone else in the class, including the instructor. You see, I already knew how to create passwords that were quite secure, and which were still easy for me to remember. I still remember the password I used for that class, many years later, even though I have never used that specific password for anything other than that one-shot class exercise.

Shell Account -- Barcelona

You won't guess what I just did!
Don't know who you're messing with
Put my comp-sci skills to work
Engineered your logon word.
What's the point here anymore?
Here's one tip to be secure:
You should be less obvious
I don't think you're smart enough.

I have the password to your...

Who's that girl from Camp Lejune
Sent you letters every afternoon?
Rather not have her around
Had to bring her server down.
