I have an avie that's adult size/shape that I only use for setting up a photo gallery (perfectly PG nature and landscape photos). A mentally disturbed person who has been harassing me turned that avie in as underaged and my account was frozen for a morning. I had to scan my driver's licence and send it in attached to a support ticket and wait for them to check it out.

I spoke with a Linden a couple of times in the process and asked if they do anything about malicious false reports like this. There was absolutely NO cause for the report, except this person's impaired mental state. The Linden told me that it would be referred to the Governance Team but that I'd never know what happened from there.

It wasn't a huge inconvenience, but really, false reports should be handled as a form of griefing.

Say I am a reasonably intelligent and motivated 12 year old. What is to stop me from going into my parents' filing cabinet some day when they aren't home and borrowing my mom or dad's birth certificate long enough to stop at the copy shop and post office on the way home from school and verifying myself as an adult to SL like that?
I actually know nothing about how it all works. But I have known several rl runaway minors who managed to set themselves up with false identities.

i have. my point THE point is CAN YOU. and should you have to as YOU are not a minor. should YOU suffer even oneday with ur account suspended with possible discontinuation of your avatar if you are too slow in responding with your age verfication. Just today a received in answer to a support ticket request for entirely DIFFERENT documents to free an alt when my main has already been age verified.

The governance team has two meetings a week. I'm starting to visit the Saturday one at noon SLT. Last weekend, we could hear the crickets. I was one of three people that was actually asking for information and the Lindens there were getting bored. Maybe a few of us could show up next Saturday and drive the discussion. It seems to be usually open to any subject. (^_^)y

I've been regularly attending the Wednesday @ 10:00 a.m. one, but the last couple of weeks I've had connect problems durin the day. VERY worthwhile meetings, IMO.

Interesting and insulting stance you take there. I don't verify, yet I don't think I act childish. I don't grief, I try to be nice to my fellow SL-inhabitants. But... registering because you don't have anything to hide is just as bad. What is your privacy worth to you? I am not handing a suspicious company my passport stuff. If they have it already, they have gotten it by illegal means. If they don't have it, and I give the info, I have given it willingly. But then I am screwed because a business I don't trust will have my details.

So... no verification for me.

I had no idea that they had in-world hours. They wouldn't review actual incidents while in front of residents. It'd be a good place to ask generally, though, about their response to malicious false reports. Thanks!

It's true, they won't address active cases. But, general questions and clarifications are not a problem there. I had one major concern cleared up last week in just a few lines of chat. (^_^)

And, if Linden stalking seems like a fun thing to do... You can always catch up on them during their office hours. These are times when they're on the clock and in-world at the same time. (^_^)y

I don't think it should take 5-7 days. I don't think you should ever have to do it more then a single time for any single account. I think if you have to verify each individual account seperately, it's probably because it's easier for LL to have that information indexed to each account seperately rather then relying on cross referencing accounts.

IDV is LL's way of giving you an extra layer of protection in being able to say "Yes, this is who I say I am and I am an adult willing to take responsiblity for myself and the things I experience on the SL platform". That's why you can verify with false information. If you want to claim to be someone else with your account information, that fraud would be on you.

But IDV I don't think was ever meant to be an ironclad door to prevent minors from accessing the main grid. It's a legal maneuver rolled into a PR trouble spot. It's meant I think primarily to provide a legal definition of who is responsible for the adult material on the grid.

So IDV isn't meant to "be enough" to prove much of anything other then you have jumped thru another hoop in saying that you are an adult and responsible for your own actions. If you were lying about the information you provided, you would be adding another layer of fraud to your account, which probably means it won't be helping you on your day in court.

So.... if LL is going to require manual verification for people that are AR'd for being underaged then I could understand being frustrated with a process that takes a week to complete. But I still think you probably gave everyone enough cause to question your maturity, Jumpy and I'd definately want ID proof from you too if I were the one reading the AR and deciding what to do.

Best advice? Stop acting like a tard and seeing how far you can go griefing people before they AR you. O, and try acting like what you are expecting to be treated as... coz even Mari at her childish best still acts like a reasonable and mature (* for her age*) human being.

Hi Jumpy, my BF and I are here together and read this thread together. We are both in college. This thread is long and at times confusing, but if we understand you, you WERE griefing people... AND using language like this reflects an early teen or pre-teen level of speech.

I have played several online worlds for nealry two years now.

I have gotten VERY GOOD at spotting kids, even sometimes guessing their ages pretty close.

The griefing you described doing and this language together makes me THINK you are 12 to 13. Barely 14... MAYBE.

At 14 to 15 the griefing and language becomes more sophisticated, and often a little more aggressive and frightening. They begin to understand that psychological pain (especially targeting women with stalking, which has happened to me, and brings into play RL fears and experiences) is far more damaging than just droppoing cars on people's heads.

It is very possible that someone simply reported EXACTLY what we have observed here.

I wish to report obervations (see attached screen caps and chat logs) that make me think there MAY be cause to suspect a child is participating in the mature grid of SL. I am concerned because their extremely juvenile behavior coupled with cosistent linguistics patterns reflect, not a mature adult, but a child of no more than 12 or 13.

I have NO MORE substantial verification of my concerns than the attached documentation. hence, I am making no formal accusation. I am merely, as a parent myself and concerned adult, passing on my observations for your review.

Hey, they've got a point, Jumpman. If you act like a kid, and talk (type) like a kid, and grief like a kid, it's only a matter of time before someone concludes that you might be a kid...

It took me a few hours to clear mine up, and probably only took that long because it was early on a weekend morning. I called the number, send in a jpg of my driver's license on a support ticket, and within a couple hours of that, I was back in business.

On the advice of the Linden who helped me, though, I filed an AR against the person who made the malicious false report against me.

i agree, and here is the horrible part. IF some idiot SAYS without proof that you ARE underage. LL suspends your account FIRST and demands that you fax them real life documents
(or scan them and add em to a support ticket) OR they will discontinue your account
if you log on with alts for the same ip address they suspend and age verifi request your alts and IP ban you (easy to spoof your mac adress but they decimate you until u verify .
