What a great subject; it's got me thinking. I had been making custom content for the Sims and Sims 2 for several years when my son told me I should come to SL. I'm like a semi-skilled laborer from Europe who traveled to the new country in steerage then found a way to make and sell enough of something to survive.
I started making clothes because I figured that's what most people buy. I rented my first shop when I had about 3 merchandise boxes to put out. Now I have three shops in rental spaces and my main shop on my own land and I make a bit more than tier each month. My son helped me get hired by an SL development company and I get a small but fairly steady PayPal income making signs and ads and things. I guess in I'm kind of a loner type person. I do most of my work off line in image editing programs. My rl family and few friends satisfy my social needs but I enjoy chatting and working with my SL friends too. I consider myself to be the same person wherever I am. I enjoy taking a break to read forum posts and join in the discussions. Easy Rider was the defining movie of my youth. And Lauren Bacall? Yes very classy. _____________________

Where do you fit in? I don't. Never been much of a 'joiner'. I arrived in SL over 3 years ago with no expectations or goals, mooched around, done a few things met a few people, made friends, made enemies and do my own thing. I do a bit of building and some live music shows neither of which fall in the mainstream clichés. I'd still build if no-one bought my stuff and I'd still do shows if no-one came to them. I'm weird like that. Damn you kids get off of my lawn! Pass me my banjo and whiskey, Martha. _____________________

A year plus, on, i don`t think i "fit in" and never have, swept along the crests and troughs of SL success and failure. I can do just about anything i want in SL now, its brought some sense of achievement, realisation of limits, and its been self driven, perhaps by obsession not to fail.I am often left with no direction, no road to travel, because ive been there done that. Dont see this as a negative post, i dont feel negative...
but sometimes ive no purpose in being in SL at all... i think there is something ive yet to do.. something im waiting for...films? ive a copy of "Remains of the day" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Remains_of_the_Day and "Orlando": http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0107756/ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orlando:_A_Biography both films have my spirit in them... |

Hmmm, ok ... Ladies' man, scripter, maker, and good friend. Oh yeah, and pervert. Not necessarily in that order. One thing I really like about SL is I can be half decent at making so many different kinds of things, including tipjars, poseballs, animations, jewelry, hair -- ok, my hair sucks -- furniture, builder's tools, and goodness knows what next.
Just no end of things (or ladies) to tinker with! ![]() The main think I like about SL is that everyone can be whatever they can make of themselves. The biggest limitations are your imagination and how fast you can type. Ain't that grand? Well, I can type pretty fast, I just can't think that fast. This gets me into trouble sometimes! |

I agree, I think that movie and also Goonies should be required viewing regardless. Saw Goonies when it was released. The Breakfast Club just didn't seem to be my type of movie, and so I've avoided watching it or learning more about it. Almost as important as "Airplane" Agree strongly Airplane important. No idea about the "almost as important" part. For my circle of friends it was "Red Dawn". Also an important film. _____________________

"Terms of Endearment" "Excalibur" "Big Trouble in Little China" *Vastly underrated "Escape from New York" "Mommie Dearest" This is my Snowed in 80's film festival. I'll watch "Big Trouble in Little China" & "Excalibur" again. Tried watching Escape from New York once but I was ill and I fell asleep. Once I have fallen asleep before a movie it is hard to ever watch it after that without falling asleep. I love Die Hard, but I fell asleep once and well . . . . ![]() "Poltergeist" "Amadeus" "Beetlejuice" "Romancing the Stone" "Bladerunner" As far as where I fit in... I've never really worried about fitting in anywhere in SL, so I guess I just sort of wing it pretty much everywhere. ![]() Saw all of them. Rather like the Romancing the Stone and the Jewel of the Nile. Poltergeist is one of the few horror movies I actually saw. If I'm remembering the correct film. Still haunts me. _____________________

OOooo, I was one of those crazies back in the day who went to the weekend midnight showings of "Rocky Horror," dressed up as Magenta and threw cards, put up umbrellas, knew all the lines... ...and have I ever mentioned I sang a duet about 6 years ago with Meatloaf? (Whaaa? It fits. He played Eddie!) I used to dress up for those midnight showings as Columbia....I probably still have the silly hat somewhere. _____________________

After a couple of years of SL I feel like I am a totally average resident. I spent my early time just looking around, then bought a 4000 m mainland plot because some girl having a pool party next door talked me into it. I have since bought up most of the region so I no longer have to go into shock when a new neighbor puts up a 30 m tall eyesore of a nightclub or giant tree house filled with cars.
When I first started, I had dreams of making a fortune selling textures. That didn't last long. I had a lot of fun building homes, shops, the occasional scripted doo-dad. Eventually I was able to focus on the the products that sold the best and developed a niche for them in the economy. As soon as my shop started paying my tier I was amazed at how much less I worried about the little day-to-day problems in SL. By that time, I had pretty much seen it all anyway. I too have a front porch that overlooks the water where I spend most of my time. I have met a lot of people on that porch, made some lasting friends, flirted with sexy redheads and seen some of the most outrageous avatars drop in. But I'm sure there are thousands just like me. Like I said, I'm just an average guy. |

Been here 3 years and never yet found a place I belong. Just like in RL
![]() Tried my hand at building - had a shop for a while, but never had enough prims to make it feasible making textures - long story there...... mentoring - enjoyed that till a few things happened and there seemed no point in doing it any more hosting at a club - shyness and reserve got in the way big time there RPing - I suck! worst RPer ever!! As for friends, in the 3 years I have been here maybe found 2 or 3 that haven't turned out to be manipulative liars, or fair-weather friends (you listen to all their problems, but the moment you have one, they run away). Don't have anyone to hang out with in-world, which tends to make me not really log in much. And am waaaaaaaaaay too shy and self-conscious for my own good, so don't go anywhere much to much meet people either. Ok fave films of the 80's: Beetlejuice Dogs In Space Excalibur Escape From New York Ghosts... of the Civil Dead Highlander Indiana Jones (all of them) Labyrinth Ladyhawke Monty Python (all of them) Romancing The Stone The Neverending Story The Princess Bride Willow Never realised I liked so many 80's movies.... PS. I am a great thread killer in Forums too...........sighs |

Hm. I fit in SL with my best online friend. We came to sl together, explored, partnered, then lost contact. Many months later, through many dangers, toils, and snares, we are together again. We have time together nearly every day, and we can share a life denied us in rl. We have the "real" stuff. Commitment, truth, love. That stuff. Three years now.
My sympathies to the poster a couple of numbers up, who commented about the manipulative liars so endemic to SL. Wow, do I know about that one. I recently discovered, entirely by accident, that a former friend who gives the strongest and most coherent impression of religious probity in their "main" avatar, frequents very "noxious" circles indeed with an alt. Is that their "right"? Sure. Is it "deceptive"? I'd say it was. Do "normative" values apply, in SL? I think they do. Why should it be otherwise? Deception is deception. Simply because the opportunity exists to behave this way... I don't know. I disagree entirely with popular notions of being non-judgmental. I think certain behaviors are damaging, regardless. "Wrong". Call me naive. It shocked the hell out of me. The question might be posed - am I being deceived by my best online friend? After three years? I don't think so. Best movie of the 80's was "Reds". Warren Beatty, Diane Keaton, Jack Nicholson, Edward Herrman, Jerzy Kosinksi, Paul Sorvino, George Plimpton, Gene Hackman... /me was a red diaper baby... |

I am pretty happy in SL. I have some great friends who I just adore, have lots of fun, really nice clothes, nice home and a successful business. It doesn't get much better than that. Now if I can just find that Mercedez I always wanted,my SL will be complete.
Though to be honest, I would be as happy with just the friends I made here.Best 80's movie ever-Goonies. But that's only cause I had a huge crush on Corey Feldman at the time. ![]() Neverending story was pretty awesome too. _____________________

me...
I have never fit into any group just skirted the edges of all and jump in here and there. I did have no clue what SL was when I joined a bunch of my gals (rl) dragged me in at the same time one of them has been in for a year now. Had no clue really. Well I grabbed some land the first 2 weeks built on it and stayed there forever. A month later I started to venture out a very wonderful neighbor showed me many things. I never knew how power this place was. So know out of my group of gf's I am really the only one left they pop in now once a month. So I am here making the best of my time. And enjoying my neighbor immensely ) But love to male new friends with you guys too._____________________

Good question, GG. I am not sure where I fit in, but I'm not too worried about it. SL provides me with an unparalled opportunity to try new things and to meet people from around the world. Much as in RL, I like to meet and talk with folks from all walks of life, so I spend time in different parts of SL. Sometimes the groups of friends overlap, and sometimes they do not. Heh, I feel a like a cross between an Venn diagram and an amateur juggler!
