Where do you fit in?

How and where do you see yourself fitting into SL?
How do you see yourself in SL?
What are your hopes and dreams, your aspirations in SL?

SL has turned into an extension of my FL, in that I am the same person, hang out with the same type of people, have the same values, etc. I am not trying to fit in as much as I am interested in doing things that I do not have the time or money to do in FL. Y'all have shared in my newbie plight...and my SL side has certainly come of age. I tried the role playing thing...not my bag! I think I am too simple for that...

I really want to learn how to build someday. It is not something that I have the time or ambition to do now, but I would love to take my creative side a step further and build my dream house, make my own clothes...

I like the idea of having a special someone waiting for me IW. I am not sure if that fits into the dreams, aspirations category...but I am taking applications! LOL

Being not a very social person, my place is on my land, where I sit in a rocking chair on my front porch with a rock-salt loaded shotgun across my lap and yell "Damn you kids get off of my lawn!" a lot.

Or something like that.

For us children of the 80s it was an important movie.

Oh dear, is it "reminiscing about the 80s day"? Well, I was and probably a part of me still is Alison.

@Cristalle: Outsiders earned me the nickname Soda for a while, though I don't know why. I don't look anything like Rob Lowe, I even got the wrong gender....

And oooooh, Time Bandits and The Goonies!

...What was the question again?

I am....a child of the 80s, obviously. On my parcel, my radio is permanently tuned to Radio Nigel.

And else: A fave quote, brownie points if anyone knows where it's from without googling it...

"The future is all around us, waiting in moments of transition, to be born in moments of revelation. No one knows the shape of that future, or where it will take us. We know only that it is always born in pain."

I'm honestly not sure where the journey is taking me, but I feel *very* far from 'arrived' myself.

The day you stop growing and changing, though... is a scary day.

Maybe I run the risk of getting thrown out of this thread... but from my perspective, it's still early dawn, the sun is rising and there's the rest of our lives ahead of us.

Cyberspace and our place in it has barely begun. It's a tough world on the digital street, but the one thing it does easily allow is second chances for just about anybody.

I'm a singer in RL, and am just 'chomping at the bit' to do live performances in SL. So If I was to really think about my 'place' in this virtual world, I would have to say it would be as a performer.

I think I could probably set something up to pull that off in rather short order, if it's not a professionally paid thing (we can't afford that)... an audience anywhere from say 20 to 80 depending on time of day, and internet radio simulcast work for you?

Mommie Dearest... still gives me chills. It's about the actress Joan Crawford, and how she was abusive to her children. Faye Dunaway gives an amazing performance. Here is this glamorous actress who, at home, is this totally drunk and neurotic mother... the hanger thing still gets to me.

"Amadeus"
"Beetlejuice"
"Romancing the Stone"
"Bladerunner"

As far as where I fit in... I've never really worried about fitting in anywhere in SL, so I guess I just sort of wing it pretty much everywhere. :)

The Hollywood Starlet Era of the 40's is of great fascination to me. It was such a glamorous time, the great ones had a beauty that can never be equalled. Add that to the grinding studio system, the incessant publicity machines, it was no wonder a lot of them were neurotic basket cases.I've become a great admirer of Joan Crawford, the actress. I love all her work, and have gained a lot of insight into the things that made her what she was off screen.

Great, sounds interesting I will have to hunt it down for the next SL down time period :)

That is the most heart wrenching movie I have ever seen, I only watch it if I need to cry, really cry...And I don't have anywhere to go the next day because I am so wrecked! LOL

So true, and Jack Nicholson added just the right amount of levity to keep it from being suicide invoking. To this day, his "I'd rather stick needles in my eyes." is one of the great lines of filmdon.

I liked him best in Witches of Eastwick, though The Shinning is a close runner up. He was excellent in Terms of Endearment though. Very few Jack Nicholson movies are very poor I find - though Wolf came close.

EDIT: Here's Jack!!!

He is also one of my favorites.. Some of his latest work is great.. I enjoyed 'About Schmidt' and 'Something 's gotta to give' was not bad. 'As good as it gets' the one line that I wish I had thought up... "You make me want to be a better man.." - 'The Shining' is a classic.

Ok, now back to the topic... I am not sure where I am going in SL.. I have not great aspirations other than to be as happy and do my best to help others be happy as well. I explore some, dance some, rp some, build some.... an idler of sorts. :)

SL is a big surprise for me I was not expecting it to become such an integral part of my life. I can honestly say that people here have become part of my life with very few qualifications. Another revelation was the fact that it brought out feelings that I was not expecting to feel again in good and interesting ways.

Getting Myrth done and leased is my next concrete goal... expect to see an announcement on that soon :) - Other than that I take it day to day, keep learning things about myself and others as well as sl... and I am having blast.

As far as Nicholson goes, the Diner scene in "Five Easy Pieces" says it all. Makes me laugh every time I order chicken salad.

Can't say that I'm even close to arrival yet. My 1st rezday isn't until August. I've nibbled on a little bit of everything. Problem is that I'm so ADD that I can't find my niche. There are things that I'm decent at, but before I've developed myself in any one area, I'm off doing something new.

Nope, I've got a long way to go yet. My hopes and dreams are to someday find something that I'm completely successful at in SL and stick with it!

I came to SL a year and a half ago with no expectations or goals... just on a suggestion from an internet buddy who said, "you should check this out sometime". I created my account that night and have been here ever since. I was well on my way to being an internet addict before I arrived, now I'm just a hopeless case, but I don't see it as a problem. With SL I can feed my addiction AND have a life. Don't get me wrong, I do work full time in RL, but all the rest of my time is spent IW.

I also wasn't looking for a relationship when I first started. I was an SL virgin for several months until I met my first partner (who later turned out to be a jerk). Swore off relationships again until I met my current partner and Master five months ago.

I'm still not a premium member (shame on me). A couple of months after I started I started buying my lindens, shared a home on a rented parcel with a friend, he left SL, I carried on alone, lost my land because the owner decided that he wanted to do something different with the sim.... then rented another parcel on the sim where my first partner lived. Being the independant woman, I did still want a place to call my own even though I spent all of my time with him (lucky for me that I did).

Being the prim addict that I am, I've since added two other parcels to my home property. But being on a limited RL budget, I wanted to find a way to alleviate some of the expense so I thought I'd try my hand at building. Started out small in what turned out to be a horrible location. Didn't sell a thing in the two months I was there. Found a new rental spot, made a little money. Found cheap rent on another sim, added a second shop. Also a horrible location for a business, but its so inexpensive, I still keep it anyway.

Then the Mall that I was renting space at closed, so I had to find another location. The landlord for my home parcel had some commercial space available. I built a shop, expanded my selection of merchandise and I'm doing pretty well there on a small scale. With a combined total of 4600m in commercial land, I'm now covering both shop land rentals and having enough spending money to keep me happy. FD's sentiments here mirror how I feel sometimes...

From: FD Spark
Most of time I think there is so many better skilled people out there and I am really not that gifted, bit invisible and in big picture of SL I don't know if matter much.

My only real goal is to maybe someday be able to cover both my commercial & residential rents and enough to go on the occasional shopping spree. Otherwise, I have a comfortable home, a massive wardrobe, a wonderful partner and a few good friends. Life is good.

Breakfast Club... one of my favorite movies. John and Allison were my favorite characters.

prolly the only reason I know it. It is on my list of films to watch though. Along with pretty in pink and a few other major ones.....Rocky Horror is at the top of the list though lol

OOooo, I was one of those crazies back in the day who went to the weekend midnight showings of "Rocky Horror," dressed up as Magenta and threw cards, put up umbrellas, knew all the lines...

...and have I ever mentioned I sang a duet about 6 years ago with Meatloaf? (Whaaa? It fits. He played Eddie!)

Just like in RL, I DON'T fit in, & I don't try to. It might feel good for a lil while ta "fit in", but usually that just means being "fake". I'm just me.

I could easily fit in, but why??

Same here! Bette Davis and Katherine Hepburn are two of my faves of the era. Bette Davis for some of her really eerie performances ("Hush, Hush, Sweet Charlotte";) and Katherine Hepburn was a real maverick - definitely her own person!

Kate is in a category all her own. I also absolutely adore Susan Hayward and Ginger Rogers. Her non dancing work is quite good, "Kitty Foyle" being a great example.

Totally agree! I think the first movie I saw him in was "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" - that was a chilling movie on several levels. Next was "The Shining" - one creepy, but excellent movie. (Still trying to get my Partner to rent that one as I see so many "Shining" references in SL haunted houses.)

Backtracked and watched his earlier movies. The "Five Easy Pieces" Diner scene is classic.

Great line from "As Good As it Gets" :

Receptionist: How do you write women so well?
Melvin Udall: I think of a man, and I take away reason and accountability.
