I read people's profiles all the time. It's amazing to see how many say OMG PERV! Don't read my profile!!! Makes me wanna read it more to see what they think they need to hide If you come within clicking distance from me and I am bored, I will read your profile, inspect your prims and maybe even check to see if your eyebrow color matches your hair. If people don't want people reading their profiles then they should leave them blank. Anyone may read mine, go ahead Edit: Also, if there are no good profiles to read when I'm bored, I sometimes sort thru my Friend List and perv the ones in there too!

ETA - isn't it amazing how we still let RL preconceptions determine our expectations? Guilty as well of course. Part of the More Predictable SL.

I'm a big profile reader and I change my a lot as well. The ones that make me laugh hardest are the "Dont "F" with me or her/him". HIP always seems to have interesting profiles.

From: Brenda Connolly "I'm not here for drama. Don't fuck with me or my friends/clan/family or I will come to your house and kill your dog."? Those always give me a chuckle. There was one guy a couple of years ago whose profile was all made-up badass, and ended with "Mess with me and you'll regret it, I know enough scripting to make your life a living hell" and other such nonsense. I was not surprised when he turned out to be nothing more than a whiny little chump with mediocre scripting skills at best .

From: Amaranthim Talon While walking thru a place the other day, I had one jerk ask me why I had two different men in my picks! The nerve! I've had some reactions like this to things in my profile. People who don't get it and want my 'thing' explained to their worldview. The problem there of course - if you can't understand my perspective, chances are I won't be able to find the words to explain it within the context of your perspective. :| - Last time it happened, I just gave up after a few comments back and forth, and replied with a smiley.

From: Pserendipity Daniels You raise an interesting philosophical point. Do you really complete your profile for your *own* benefit? Pep (I would have thought the converse was the truth of the situation; otherwise, why bother to put anything in it at all?) Other than blank profiles, I can't think of a profile I've ever seen which wasn't for the benefit of the writer. Whether to make a statement, promote a cause, attract particular people, state desires or goals, declare one's love, or whatever, they are ultimately for the benefit of the writer.

I've been trying over and over to post this comment, but it keeps timing out.
Apologies if I post twice.
Marianne, your profile is just fine. It makes a picture of the person I imagine you to be.
English is not your first language!? I never would have guessed.

I was discussing relationships yesterday with a friend. She said, "No one wants me."
I looked at her profile...and it was full of "don'ts" and "no's". Every entry seemed to contain something she didn't like. If I'd been a stranger reading it, I would have walked away quickly.
I told her so, and she said, "But people have done all that stuff to me and I didn't like it."
I agreed, but gently pointed out that she was, in effect, pre-accusing an interested stranger of being a not-nice person. I suggested that she re-write her profile to be more friendly and open...and if someone she met turned out to be a nik-nik, THEN tell them to sod off.
She thought about that a while, and then re-wrote her profile. We'll see if she makes a few more friends now.

First of all, thank you for the IM witch corrected the typos. It was in the part of the profile that I lifted direct from a site I’ve forgot about. So I didn’t run a spellchecker on it!
I should use my own words, but when I read it I thought: Yes! And I’ve had it in my profile over a year now.
Pep said: You raise an interesting philosophical point. Do you really complete your profile for your *own* benefit?
Let me try to answer it. This is where my English may fail; philosophy isn’t something I think much about even in my own language. I think my profile is 80% for my own benefit, and 20% for others benefit. I want my profile to give a good first impression of me. It is like an extension of the work I put down in making my avatar appear visually. It is mostly how I like to see myself, but I have to admit that I want others to think it looks ok. I will not change because someone tells me to change. But if I got feedback that sounded interesting, I would think about it and maybe try it out. That goes for how my avatar looks as well.
The part that’s there for others is that those who look for something special, like a possible RL partner, can sort me out. Also my timezone and ESL gives practical information.
I was wondering if I should delete the roleplay pick. But that’s a pick I’ve put a lot of myself in, and I think it says something about me out of a roleplay situation too.
I struggle with the sentence: SL is my "Pretendy Fun-Time Game". I thought it was a cleaver way to say that SL isn’t so important for me that I will loose sleep over it. But I don’t like the word “Game”. It is much more than a game for many people. I want to rewrite it, maybe just remove it.

Why don't you just say "I love SL but I don't lose sleep over it."

From: Ralektra Breda I read people's profiles all the time. It's amazing to see how many say OMG PERV! Don't read my profile!!! I don't get this a lot, but I do get it often enough to make me think, "If you didn't want people to *read* it, why the hell did you *post* it?" I can usually tell quite a bit from a person's profile. By reading one's profile, I can generally get a good idea of that person's maturity level and whether or not the person may be fun to be with or will end up being a huge fountain of drama. People who write things like, "Mess with my friend/brother/sister/pet hamster, you're messing with me, and I will hunt you down until the day you die and make you wish you were never born" into their profiles are people I tend to avoid. To me, it suggests deep-rooted drama with a side order of mental and emotional instability.

From: Arcady Yue I can tell in a flash if you're very literate, not a native-English speaker, or a native speaker who can't write. I'll deal with the first two freely, but I have very little patience for a native English speaker who can't master writing in her own native language (and its very easy to spot the difference between that and someone for whom English is not a native language - even people who who can barely speak English write more thoughtfully than people who failed, or should have failed, the 4th grade). It's very easy to spot those that failed, or should have failed, the 4th grade. Pep (They don't know the difference between its and it's)

its v. it's is a very common mistake and not something you can, by itself, rationally hold against people.
Things like bad word order, inability to master basic spelling, fragmented thoughts, and so on are another matter entirely. Is the issue one of rushed typing, ESL, or simply lack of an ability to convey thought? It's the last of these that is an issue. People who have poor grammar or spelling as a larger rule, rather than a small set of specifics. While the ESL crowd often has the same problem, the difference becomes very easy to spot when you examine the content.
I have no patience for people who have a lack of ability to be thoughtful or express themselves, but I am rather fond of a number of people for whom English is not a primary language.

I don't read profiles. It's not a principle, I just forget to do it.
(Oh hell, I admit it - it's because I failed fourth grade! I will put *that* into my profile and see what happens.)
Usually when I see a person, I talk to them, or they to me. Conversation trumps profile-reading as far as getting to know ppl is concerned.

Riseon Kosten stands up, looking nervously around the room. "Hi, my name is Riseon, and I am a profile junkie." ---- I read everyone's profile. I also look at the avatar. Both of these help form a first impression. I think how much work you put into your appearance in world, especially when combined with what you put in your profile(even if it's nothing!), says a lot about someone. There are of course, exceptions to every rule. I also spend lots of time on my profile, and update it frequently. I get a lot of comments about it, making me wonder if more people read profiles than a lot of people around here think. Comments always welcome. (edit) P.S. Sorry Marianne, I am not in world and can't check on your profile right now. I wasn't trying to ignore the whole point of the OP hehe.

Sorry Marianne, your profile is not very original or interesting; from what I have seen of you in the forums you have more to offer than what is presented in it. The main characteristic that it reveals is your modesty. 7/10 for effort and 5/10 for achievement.
Pep (I wouldn't IM you inworld to initiate a conversation because of it, which must be some sort of criterion.)
