From: Ann Launay You're only 'person,' not people. She's got a point tho. I don't mind being people's springboard, though it happens a lot to all Mentors I'm sure. I think it largely depends what they are into. If people show a clearly defined interest then I will point them in that direction, advise them to join groups, look for listed events which match, occasionally match them up with someone I know is into the same thing. Course the less salubrious places are usually very busy and you'll get talking but it might not be who you want to meet I also often steer people towards the building tutorials, the freebie places and I always always recommend Svarga - it might not be a place teeming with people but it is beautiful and deserves to be seen.

From: Trout Recreant God knows I don't care about them. There have been a few other misadventures in addition to the Trout Rating scam...er...service, but that one seems to get the most attention.
Amy: I like that plan. I've rezzed things on people's heads before, but never a chicken. Buckets, lamp shades, random prims, odd signs, etc. But a chicken is a solid gold idea! I usually use Daisy the cow ...

From: ZallaN Whitfield Sounds like a good plan to me.....just make sure it's a chicken and not a cock(erel) because that might start a completely different conversation!!
Happy Daze What a great first post

From: Brenda Connolly Trout's true mark of excellence, in my opinion are the classic Bollywood TV Vignettes he unleashed on us last year. Pure Comedy Gold.
*BTW Trout, the Nazi's haven't got a chance this season. No youth, the Farm System has been shot. They still have some big guns, but they getting a bit long in the tooth. Attendance is down so they can't even afford any decent free agents. As usual, The Yankees will have all the money to buy the best players. Those were really, really fun. I should bring them back more often. Maybe an occasional appearance in one of the drama-bomb threads. They fit in so well in those threads.

I really wish there were a way to show them all at the hangout some night. Not just yours, but all of them. Some funny stuff.

Hi A place where you always see people is called ,sexy (note the komma). My regards to the barkeeper Barry. OT I read a lot of references to "the NAZIS" on the forum. Is that a specific group of people in SL with a neo-nazi tendency, or is it the discriminating anti-germanic and certainly politically in-correct term for people from Germany? Just curious, as in the later case i wouldn't be wanting to be here /OT

Oh the Hobo Infohub is fun! And yes, I liked the Shelter as well. For dancing and meeting couples n stuff, I like Sphynx at 2nd Avenue, though I haven't been there in months; not sure if it's still around. There used to be a totally fun horseracing track, where you could bet on the horses, and we'd all sit around gabbing and wearing big hats, but when gambling was banned, it went away.

Just curious, as in the later case i wouldn't be wanting to be here /OT It's neither, Maggie. It's a reference to the constant posts we get where people refer to anyone they don't like as "nazis". As in, "OMG LL banned gambling!! Those NAZIS!!" or "Such and such property owner threw me out for not paying rent! THAT NAZI!!" Those totally inappropriate references are so ridiculous that they just make you want to roll your eyes and give up. It's also a reference to Godwin's Law. I don't remember the exact text, but it's used to measure how long it takes before someone makes a Nazi reference in a thread. Nobody here has anything against Germans or Germany. Remind me to tell you the story of How Trout Got On The Wrong Bus In Bremen and Had To Be Taken Home By A Seven Year Old. Very nice people, the Germans. I don't understand the attraction to Vitamalz, though. Blech. Macht Stark und Schmect my ass.

Godwin's law: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Godwin's_law In these forums, Nazi references are often used to try to kill a thread that is perceived as out of control (since there is very very little moderation). Names for this include "Reductio ad Hitlerum" and my personal favorite, "Reductio ad Nazium". From Wikipedia: "For example, there is a tradition in many newsgroups and other Internet discussion forums that once such a comparison is made, the thread is finished and whoever mentioned the Nazis has automatically "lost" whatever debate was in progress. This principle is itself frequently referred to as Godwin's Law. It is considered poor form to raise such a comparison arbitrarily with the motive of ending the thread. There is a widely recognized codicil that any such ulterior-motive invocation of Godwin's law will be unsuccessful (this is sometimes referred to as "Quirk's Exception" .[8]" Unfortunately, amusing and public-spirited tho Reductio ad Nazium attempts may be, Quirk's Exception generally seems to rule the day .

From: Trout Recreant June's suggestion of putting something in your profile is a good one. People check that and it breaks the ice. I almost always check someone's profile before I start talking to them, because it gives me an idea of who they are. Funny thing, Trout, but I do not recall anything in your profile when I looked at it the other day. Well, other than to notice that one group about 'napping.

From: Madhu Maruti Brenda: I agree that wandering alone through a nice build is often its own reward; I try to advise newbies to adjust expectations so that they can better appreciate the diversity of pleasures SL offers. But when a newbie specifically asks "where do I meet people?" I don't want to advise them to enjoy their alone time right then. Open Latte - have heard a lot about this place but the one time I visited there were only two people there and they must have been engaged in IM because they didn't respond when I greeted them. Will visit again. Keira: thanks for the recommendations! The one time I visited Open Latte there were a small crowd of people in the corner, one person sitting outside, and a few people standing elsewhere, but popped out before I fully rezzed. I explored the place a little and wandered over to the small group. They were talking about some upcoming wedding, and I had nothing to add to that, but I still wandered towards them. Before I got to them they all suddenly said bye and left. Soo, I made a u-turn and went to the one sitting outside. Couldn't get a response from him. And so I have never been back.

From: Lindal Kidd "I'll bet that av is so-and-so's alt" are always good icebreakers. My how I hate those comments. One of the reasons I go out of my way to constantly say "Sonia and Sid are my alts" (hah, Sonia has become an alt). Gah. And I still get "Random name is an alt of yours, right?" I have, on occasion, gotten the "you are random name's alt, right", but that is much rarer. The mere concept that I have 2 alts seems to lead people to suspect everyone is my bloody alt. I have also quickly fled places that boiled down to "so and so that just left is an alt, has to be . . .". (except for that alt party, but then I that is what I expected). There needs to be something put in one of the new resident kits, or in what newbies are just generally told "act stupid, wear the generic avatar, don't meet anyone for months, or you will be tagged an alt." aaah.

From: Kathy Morellet I'll second that! If it wasn't for the Shelter, I wouldn't have lasted a week in SL. I'll third that! Same feeling. I found a LM from Help Island that took me to the Shelter. Once someone showed me how to sit on a dance ball, I was hooked. I spent days just twirling around in a circle, lol, until finally I asked suggestions and they told me where to go. There are alot of people around all the time, and many are very friendly and chatty. Very newbie-friendly. I have a soft spot in my heart for the Shelter.

I haven't looked at it in a while, but there was stuff in there when I left it! I wonder what happened to my profile? I'll check it as soon as I get home and fix it. There should have been a quote in there that I really like, a picture, and some other stuff.

I found all my friends in the sim of Transylvania.
First place I went when I came to SL. They were also the first ones to say "hello". Been going back ever since.
Lots of folks there will strike up a chat with you.
