If they like hanging out in a totally hang out kinda place, the cartel hangout would be fitting (if there are ppl there at the time, and talkative)

There are 4 people there right now! Some are even visible.

If they like dancing, any number of clubs, not sure which ones are the friendly popular ones anymore

My partner and I do a lot of dancing (in fact that's how we met) and when our regular dance locale closed, we had been having a difficult time finding another without major gesture spam, the kind of music we like, a friendly atmosphere but one where the F word isn't tossed around every second...all in one place.

We've found two - one large and ALWAYS crowded, but very friendly, the other smaller, more "family oriented" (by family I mean like everyone-knows-my-name). We stumbled on the latter on St. Patrick's Day just trying to find a decent event and loved it.

The large one is Frank's Place and the smaller one is Cleopatra's. For newbies, either place would have people there and be welcoming. :)

I'm not a newb any more but I still have this same issue -- largely because I'm not really looking to socialize much, but also I need a more souped up computer to handle crowds.

I'll second the NCI Kuula recommendations. I got so much attention when I was a newb there. People were so helpful. I'll never forget when one of the well known names got me to dance at her weekly dance for new residents. NO ONE gets me to dance in RL. NO ONE! I don't hang out at NCI much now because I would feel like a fake newbie after a whole year in SL. I suppose I could volunteer.

I don't think anyone has mentioned the Coffe Shop at Mill Pond. (That's the way my LM spells it anyway). There's almost always people there and I hear they are very welcoming for intelligent conversation.

I want to check out Madhu's Cafe, but I'm afraid of going around touching her chairs and things and not saying "hello." :-)

What a great bunch of suggestions. I think I've done almost all of them in my time in SL. Stopped in at the Forum Cartel Hangout last week and it lived up to its reputation. What a friendly place. Searching for places and groups that share a person's interests is a great idea. That's how I found almost all of the friends I chat with on a regular basis.

I'm not a particularly outgoing person in RL or SL, but it seems wherever I go in SL I find someone to chat with. Sometimes we become friends and see each other again, sometimes not. C'est la vie. Just like real life I suppose.

Another thing I do is become a sort of SL tourist. If I read about an interesting place on the forum or in a blog (and there is no shortage of SL blogs), I'll note it for later and go visit it. I've met some really neat people that way. I've also found some deserted, but really cool builds.

Madhu's Cafe is a great place to meet some new people when it's hopping and a fine place to chillax when its quiet. Thank you Madhu for making it such a welcoming place.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone. Rhaorth, you've reminded me that I need to check out your arcade - then I will add it to my list of "fun things to suggest"!

Also thanks for the kind words about my place. :D It's always a pleasure to have visitors. Weston - no worries, just come when I'm not there! :D

welcome mad

czari chat/gesture spam is one of the main reasons I stopped going to clubs in SL
I like chatting with folks but not when I have to scroll through 100's of lines of howls, hooo and god knows what else... gets to a person after awhile

I prefer the quiet peaceful nature type settings which is why you will find me at the old fishing hole quite a bit...

I soooo need to make a pair of hip wader boots LOL

Another vote for the discussion forums, both these and the ones at SLUniverse. Be forewarned though, we SLUers are a rather lively and rambunctious bunch. I have gotten to know quite a few people there.

And a vote for Jade's Jazz Club. Jazz and other kinds of cool music all night long, friendly people, and trivia questions for prizes. GREAT dance balls, everything from waltz to swing dancing.

If you happen to like 50's and 60's music, give 'Runaround Sue's" a try! The music and DJ's are fantastic and the people are all top shelf!!!

I'm not a vampire and I don't RP as one, and I don't have any subconscious longing to be part of the family.

I do find that "The Wall" in Trans normally always has a few people there, and they are always friendly and open.

They don't seem to mind that in SL I'm pretty much the same as RL me, and definitely not one of the "undead". Maybe it's the tempting aroma of dinner that makes me so welcome..;)

Anyway, I've made several very good friends there , and if you ever get bored of the tumbleweed which blows through SL for a lot of the time.. it's worth a visit.

NB

Also, if nothing else, it's nice to see one of the more intriguing and interesting corners of SL. Especially if you've seen enough Barbie and Ken lookalikes to last a lifetime..:)

Yes, a lot of people will be put off by that. I really don't like the first question out of someone's mouth to be "so where RU from?" or even worse, "A/S/L?"

But "sure is laggy out today", or "I'll bet that av is so-and-so's alt" are always good icebreakers.

It typically isn't my first question. I usually start off with Hello, and I noticed in your profile that you enjoy .... I don't go in for the hard stuff right away.

I can only aspire to be as cool and respected as Mr. Trout.

This is a good thread almost three pages on-topic! Who would have thought??

I think you meet ppl in SL much the same way you do in RL - you just talk to them.

My other technique is that when I find new people in my sim or anywhere else and they don't talk it's usually because they are afk or have a screen full of IMs. My technique in this instance is to sneak up behind them and rez a chicken on their head then hide behind a bush. Some people obviously see this as perfectly normal behaviour, others however say "Oi! Why did you put that chicken on my head....?" and thus the conversation begins.

I've no clue who Trout is, but he certainly has a following in these forums..;)

Perhaps he might be persuaded to become the Carnegie of SL..

If you follow links in groups, you can usually find the group owner and check their picks out, 100% of the time I have found the spot I'm looking for and sometimes even nice surprises

Hi!

/me waves.

I'm Trout.

Not cool, probably not respected all that much, certainly no Carnegie. No idea how to influence people. I do a decent job of making friends, but my entire book would consist of two words: "Be friendly".

Your main claim to fame, I believe, is the Trout Rating, is it not?

Sounds like a good plan to me.....just make sure it's a chicken and not a cock(erel) because that might start a completely different conversation!!

God knows I don't care about them. There have been a few other misadventures in addition to the Trout Rating scam...er...service, but that one seems to get the most attention.

Amy: I like that plan. I've rezzed things on people's heads before, but never a chicken. Buckets, lamp shades, random prims, odd signs, etc. But a chicken is a solid gold idea!

Trout's true mark of excellence, in my opinion are the classic Bollywood TV Vignettes he unleashed on us last year. Pure Comedy Gold.

*BTW Trout, the Nazi's haven't got a chance this season. No youth, the Farm System has been shot. They still have some big guns, but they getting a bit long in the tooth. Attendance is down so they can't even afford any decent free agents. As usual, The Yankees will have all the money to buy the best players.
