Not sure if this is the right place to ask, but...I've seen notices for SL yard sales (and who doesn't love a good yard sale?). How does that work? Dopey question, but wouldn't all the items need to be transferable?

Thanks!

yep.
They are generally just people doing a bit of an inventory clean out by selling any of their transferrable items that they dont want anymore.
they just rez em and set them for sale. (i think)

I've been seeing "We're clearing out our inventory" in search quite a bit. What kind of mind game is that? It's not like they have warehouses full of couches and pants that have to be emptied to make room for new items. It's SL. It's virtual. There is no physical storage for any bulk of any one item. One item is one item and it is copied every time it is "sold".

Yard sales, as I see them, are just temporary price reductions to increase visitors and customers. They're sales. Really, a sale is a nice way to attract honest customers. It just feels funny to hear of a "Clearance Sale" or "Yard Sale" event in SL. The only yard sales I would believe in SL would be someone planning on selling off their property and are getting rid of their transferable [No-Copy] items, or some sort of drop-in event for people who can't afford store space but have items to sell. (^_^)

typically, the SL yard sale is free or very low rent space to set up a vender. It's only temporary and everything gets returned after a week. Space if first come first serve. It is used for selling excess inventory as you have mentioned but also for helping crafters get started selling their prooducts.

i have had yard sales, to clean out my inventory (from impusle shopping mistakes, mostly). basically, stuff i bought that i will NEVER use, so instead of just deleting it, giving someone else a chance at it, for a relly cheap price.

stuff that never sold was simply deleted.

i'm rebuilding again, though. LOL

carrying around a huge inventory causes lag. unused stuff just has got to go!

there are (or used to be) a couple of very high profile "Flea Matrkets" where you could go to sell them your used items. (SexGen and Devpose items were in high demand) but really anything transferrable.

They buy low (let's say "half price of retail" )and then they resell it in their market for a bit of profilt.. but still less than full retail.

I've seen very few "yard sales" that included copyable items created by the seller. Though I have seen a few scams where the "yard sale" was nothing more than copiable freebies set for sale.

Fhelzgud has had a FREE PUBLIC YARD SALE in Sammamish for two years plus now.
We have 20 prim allowances for any to set their wares out for free.

No Groups to join or profits to split. We do not allow any re-boxed freebies, or material not suitable for PG area.

We feel this is a way to give back to the community by offering both new & old builders, designers, & artists a place to show their wares. We have had many from all over the world who have started businesses begin at Fhelzgud.

We are not subsidized and are only able to keep it going by sales of our own items. This became real dicey, especially when some started copying our builds and then slashing prices and settng out in our yard in direct competition (even using my own free mod/copy textures to create exact replicates) , ouch.

That has come real close to killing us. Talk about tearing the Goose apart that lays the golden egg lol. Many times saved only by custom building we have done outside of Fhelzgud.

After the first year we noticed we had became somewhat a business model as yard sales seemed to proliferate the events calender even though most are not Free or Public.. Even our events headings were being mimicked.

We invite all to come and support in world content providers by shopping at Fhelzgud. We could sure use some support ourselves :-). We do not make much in the way of profits, and that would be nice :-), especially in view of some extroidinary earning claims I've seen lol

Oh, I am glad I read this....LOL....I have been boxing up my items for a garage sale. *slaps forehead* I didn't even think about rezzing the object and setting for sale. I have plenty of land and prims to do this. Thanks! Sure made my life much much easier

I've gotten some really nice (and expensive items) for gifts and recently won the grand prize in a shopping mall quest. I'm talking items from some of the top designers. One was a multi-ball, 360 pose, multi gender, sex bed that I about choked when I priced it at the retail store and saw it was priced at 8999L!!!

So since it is something I would never use, I set up a "yard sale" in a skybox on my property and brought the price down to 6000L and was amazed how quickly it sold. Since then I have put high quality items out and it is netting some nice spending money.

But for me, the key is making the area very attractive as well as having quality merchandise. I visited some other advertised yard sales recently and was repulsed by the utter chaos and selling of obviously freebies going on.

So, there are yard sales...and yard sales.

I adore yard sales, both for selling stuff that's cluttering up my inventory and picking up cheap stuff. I wanted a comfy chair to sit in while I was Gimping or Building, and got one at a yard sale for L$7. Can't get better than that. At one point in time I had a 3 story house's worth of furniture. Now that I'm enjoying my homeless lifestyle, I wanted to clear out all the furniture in the Inventory. Hooray for yard sales.

So true! thank you all for this information. I like how SL looks just like RL in this regard: some people have their own sale, in their front yard; neighbors band together for a community sale; and then there is the mother of all sales: the flea market! (but is anyone really selling fleas?? because that's just...yuck. they get everywhere.)

I have heard that before but not sure the accuracy. I have a huge inventory lol. Mass textures, and a lot too :-)> I also collected every freebie I could, back when I started and I throw nothing away.

I've also been known to build a bit lol (I keep everything I build). If any could direct me to a knowledge base article regarding this I would really appreciate a clearer understanding.

I keep a lot of things that are in boxes and wonder if there is any difference (some boxes may have 50 items and some much more) and at what amount of data or objects in inventory noticeble lag may be produced?

Also, would a sim experience lag sim wide if x number of large prim inventory owners were present?

I could expect maybe some client side lag like taking longer for inventory to load after that though it would seem that inventory would be low on the list as a lag monster so "help me Mr, Wizard" ready to learn sumpin new again :-)

This is a recent thread about the amount of inventory vs lag issue. Not sure we came up with anything definitive...but maybe something to help in here:

Is there an easy way to sort your inventory into transferable items and non-transfer? I have over 40,000 items in my inventory and would love to yard-sale the items I rarely use, but the thought of going through 40,000+ items looking for the transferable ones always puts me off.

Well once you dicide you don't want a 20k inventory to lag you and prevent you TPing properly or having to seach through it to find things. Your dicission is delete ot sell stuff you don't use.
The "keep everything I get" theory is just crazy.

type in "copy" in your inventory search, and only transferrable items will appear. :D

ok, two things,

It still may be true that lag is caused by a large inventory, however thats never been noticeable to me and is why I can't buy it. I've had a very large inventory for a long time and when sl is running right (lol) I've not had any prob.

I ask for a knowledge base article only because of this kind of thing, a thread is basically opinions unless it is backed by a knowledge based article. I do see one poster who mentions 40,000 in inventory and though if I unpacked all of my boxes I would probably be at least that high I only have maybe 21,000.

A help with inventory clean up can be somewhat simplified by opening another window in your inventory which you can do under the file tab in inventory. With two or more inventories open you can slide from one to the other, even creating folders as you go.

Btw, I wont be changing my inventory anytime soon if it is a problem its a small neglible one Reminds me of the avi who came to my PG yard naked and when ejected claimed that a mentor told him clothes caused lag.

It does not cause lag, but may slow down your teleports a bit ;)

I know people with 25k items in their inventory and they never hiccup.

Here we go again lol, my tp never been an issue, ever. I don't mean to be problematic but where does this come from?

Unless, it is again in a knowledge based article can we stop declaring something true. A lot of total miss-understandings are promted by these very kind of issues. People show up naked at Fhelzgud (oh the horror! :-)) Just because a person has been around a long time (like myself :-)) doesnt' make what my opinions are true.

Likewise, a poster with excessive amounts of posts do not make the poster credible or informed.

A mentor is not a Linden employee or always a credible source of info. Same with instructors and even some Lindens are not up on all operations.

I keep mine under 8k and I seem to have less problems from the opposite side of the world than people in the same city as LL :)

I agree, I have over 50K items and dont see any slowdown when teleporting compared to an alt with only 100 items. I think this is just a myth (one of many) started by the forum know-it-alls who dont know jack.
