Hi, I have had trouble lately with the speed of my inventory opening.I have massed quite a large selection of stuff over time and do a cull every now and then but it keeps growing. Breeds like rabbits a good description. What is a good or sensible size to restrict it to or does it make no difference. The size must affect speed,I will not give a figure in case you mock. cheers Blot

The more you have the longer it takes to update. As far as a reasonable size, well... I have just over 30k items and yes, it's a pain in the rear sometimes. |

my inventory is around 24,000 to 30,000 not sure of exact number and not in world to check
I do not see any difference between my main, and my alt (alt has basic inventory plus a little, maybe a few 1000) not much at all anywho I do not see any difference with the alt and the main as far as performance and searching my inventory I clear cache about once a month, more if needed, and it only takes a minute or 2 at most to load my main's inventory. That is no big deal to me _____________________

Well, it's supposed to be easier to update if you have less items. And they say it's easier to lost inventory stuff if you have more items... But dunno. Just in case, I have less than 10k inventory stuff... Could have less, but I'm too lazy to clean the inventory =/

What I have noticed lately is that when I have the inventory window open and click 'new window' to get a second or third one, that will quite often lock my screen for anywhere from 5-30 seconds. It doesn't really seem to matter where I am at, so I'm thinking that sim performance is not necessarily related, although SL performance in general could be. I've also started wondering if it was related to my growing inventory (only a bit over 10k right now), but others have posted before that they have 3 or 5 times as much as I do.

I've only got about 3200 things in my inventory. When I told someone that, he said 'do I smell a noob?'. Honestly, I just like to keep my invo neat and trim like myself! But I have put quite a lot of low-use stuff into boxes for easier storage. A box only counts as 1 item, even if it contains 40 things.

I got told a little tip once and it has made a huge difference for me in tp'ing and that is to move all your landmarks into a sub-folder inside the landmark folder. As when you tp the client checks your landmarks, I cant remember exactly what was said.. but now it does not take me 3 hours to TP!

I've heard (but now can't recall the source) that excess inventory can cause some lag, etc. I have no idea if that's true. I like to keep my inventory to no greater than 3500 and 3000, if possible. I do the same thing with storing a lot of items I only use occasionally. Currently my inventory is around 4500 due to recent acquisition of freebies/demos/etc. I haven't culled through yet and it's driving me nuts!! How do you all with huge inventories find things? (I know, I know...use search in inventory )Oh, I put my lm's in sub-folders under the lm folder...organized by category. I did it for organization but didn't realize it can help tp time..woot!! _____________________

As when you tp the client checks your landmarks, I cant remember exactly what was said.. but now it does not take me 3 hours to TP! ![]() Doesn't the viewer show different icons for landmarks that you've recently been to? Like maybe it shows bright red for ones you've been to and a darker red for ones you haven't been to. If so, it may be that a TP will make the viewer look at all your LMs to see if it needs to update any of them to "used recently." In general, except when you clear your cache and except for the LM/TP comment above, I don't think the size of your inventory really matters when moving around the grid. Sometimes (tho I don't think I've seen that in a while) upgrading to a new version of SL will clear the cache for you. |

I try very hard to keep my inventory under 3500, but it's a bit above that at the moment. I use storage boxes in my inventory. I usually go through my clothes file once a month and box up anything new that I've obtained with a picture of me wearing the outfit on the box so I can just rez the box to see what it is. I do think it makes a bit of a difference from when I had a much larger inventory. Having to scroll through a lot of things to find what i want is a pain, and I think I would go a little bit crazy with a larger inventory. But, then, I'm not an overly organized person, which is a good part of the problem, I guess. _____________________

Try to get it under 10K if you value your ability to easily glide through SL (well ... )
Mine is down to 24K from 28K and I am despairing of ever being graceful! _____________________

you guys are amazing..Im at 45k and the best i can even consider doing is going to a sandbox and sorting thru trash and lost and found and just leaving it..sigh..i'm simply not an organiser.But..if someone could absotively posolutely connect lag with inventory size i'd spend the week cleaning it...definitely. ~Lana Tomba |

I try every now and then to muck threw my inventory. I have taken it down from 21K to around 19k. I havent noticed any difference, it still takes for ever to fetch when I clear my cache. As far as deleting my LM's, I try to check them out every so often to see if they are still good. I have been doing a lot of that lately, it is oh so much fun to fall out of the sky and land in someones bathtub that I have never met before.

Calling cards in inventory?
02-06-2008 10:45
Calling Cards, Lost n Found, and Trash is usually where I shed a ton of inventory. I weeded lost and found (amazing what you find in there - too bad its all called "object" and you have to spend hours rezzing it all in a LARGE empty area) and emptied my trash the other day, (as well as clearing cache), but calling cards never occured to me. I have a bunch, but I never look at them or use them. I think you get them automatically when you friend someone? (but that seems repetitive), or you can specifically exchange them with someone else. What really is the point of calling cards? What do you use them for? Does it hurt anything if I delete them ALL? Thanks, Princess Ivory |

Sometimes I go back through old calling cards to see people I met when I first started playing etc. Generall people stop talking to me 2 seconds after adding me as a friend.

Thanks, Princess Ivory You don't need them, and it won't hurt anything to get rid of them. I don't really know what the point of them is, either. I never really use them for anything. Notecards is another file that tends to get unwieldy really fast. Every time you go somewhere or look at something you get new ones, and you end up with a lot of repeats. I try to flush stuff out of there repeatedly. I recently went through and brutally deleted. It was a major housecleaning. I might have noticed a small improvement in the time it took for stuff to rez when I tp'ed and less lag, but it could have been psychological - like when you change the oil in your car and it feels like it's running better. I can't prove any kind of link between performance and inventory size, but it feels better to have everything organized, the junk thrown out and stuff where you can find it quickly. _____________________

Calling cards are for when you want to contact someone without searching for them and without adding them as your friend. It's a nice way of saying "I don't know you well enough to add you as a friend, but I'd like to be able to contact you quickly." The only thing is, you have to be face to face with a person to give/receive calling cards, which can be annoying if you both never are online at the same time.
I've gotten in the habit of storing extra stuff in permanently rezzed storage boxes. Textures n stuff are especially nice to store this way, as the storage boxes are scripted to let me flip through the stored items quickly and pull individual items back into inventory. I cull inventory whenever I go over 5000. It's just a personal limit I set, no particular reason. _____________________

I keep hearing about storing inventory in prims and even making backups. Have not done it myself but sounds like such a good idea. Only problem is if something happens to them but I suppose what could?

I keep hearing about storing inventory in prims and even making backups. Have not done it myself but sounds like such a good idea. Only problem is if something happens to them but I suppose what could? Some people rezz the storage prims inworld on land they own, and store them that way. I worry that I'd forget where they were, or need them when I'm on the other side of the grid in the middle of something. Others take the rezzed storage prim back into their inventory (make sure it has a recognizable name other than "object!" , and might even have a subfolder for inventory storage prims, so they are all together. The advantage to this is that it is still in your inventory, not floating around at 700m somewhere and forgotten about. It is with you where ever you are. And now it only counts as ONE item in your inventory, instead of including the 100 items inside of it!That said, I haven't managed to get my own stuff organized enough to do it! There are products you can buy that will let you browse the contents, or you can just do a quick and dirty and toss them in the plywood cube, and look at the contents tab. _____________________

I keep hearing about storing inventory in prims and even making backups. Have not done it myself but sounds like such a good idea. Only problem is if something happens to them but I suppose what could? Ohhhh...storing excess inventory in prims/storage boxes is the BEST!!! Everything I have in my AV inventory that is able to be copied is also in storage (as well as on an alt) so I have two back ups if something happens to inventory. Non-copy items that I don't use regularly are in my storage so. With all the screwy inventory loss things happening in SL, having items in storage actually sometimes seems safer...lol. I personally LOVE the THinC system storage boxes as well as their texture organizers. These let me just click arrows and see hover text of each item and can then pull just that item out of storage. But a good ole plywood box works for storage just as well. _____________________
