What really is the point of calling cards? What do you use them for? Does it hurt anything if I delete them ALL?

Thanks,
Princess Ivory

If you open a calling card, the avatar's profile will open - bit quicker than using search.

I think it was originally sort of SL etiquette to offer or drop your calling card - a bit less than offering freindship, but still polite.

The amount of landmarks has an effect on TP time? Wow, thanks for that tip.

Don't get too excited. I really doubt this is much more than an urban myth of sorts. Right up there with flashing your headlights at a red light makes it turn green :)

There are products you can buy that will let you browse the contents

I have some of these and they're great! Cute too, they look like those metal box containers you can buy at The Container Store. :) You can browse the contents and reclaim to inventory without opening the edit or contents. I have a couple in my home shoved into a little storage nook.

Since I started using these, my inventory stays right around 1,500k.

In RL I subscribe to the "6 month rule": If I haven't worn it in 6 months, I get rid of it. I try to do this with my SL closet too. If it's been in my inventory so long I have forgotten I had it - I pass it on to a needy newbie or just delete it.

Calling cards are also useful for group IMs. I took the calling cards of 3 of my friends, tossed them in a new folder and start an IM conference that way so we can chat no matter where we are in a store, or at an exploration sim etc. People also tend to do this to spam their entire friend list into one conference chat. I weed my calling cards out every once in a while.

My inventory is inching towards 17k again. I used to always keep it at 10k or under, but now its near impossible. I refuse to toss anything of value into a prim to store it, I've lost too much that way in the past. I used to keep my textures in a texture organizer, I need to find that again. Was an awesome way to keep that mess organized and I even used one for all my friends pictures and snapshots.

I hate calling cards. I delete delete delete them. As Oryx said, some people use them for contacts that aren't necessarily friends but that just seems like a nuisance to me. I just makes notes in their profiles.

You do have to keep at least one calling card in their inventory. I keep forgetting why, but it causes problems if you don't. I made the mistake of deleting them all once and I had some kind of problem contacting my friends. I had to delete a friend and add them back in to get one calling card to fix the problem so now I just always leave one in. As I said, I don't remember specifically what that problem was.

Start by cleaning out duplicate landmarks and unnecessary notecards and you'll be amazed how quickly you inventory drops.

Same here. Got a lot of textures? I must have well over 12000 in textures!
I probably have less than 50 textures, but I might box them up and see if that makes a difference. And maybe I'll try to clear the excess LMs and calling cards also.

I found my alt with only 2000 items is a lot zippier in comabat then my main with 10,000, so I gave away and deleted till I got down to 7000 and it seams I have no problems logging in from Australia while people in USA are telling us SL is down :)

<shameless plug> And if you want to reorganise your inventory, I am selling over 100 prenamed empty folders you can drop your stuff into sorting, for only $20L, (7cents US), send me an IM and 20 Linden and I will send you a set. Yes they are just named empty folders in a sytem but saves a lot of typing and you can always customise or ad more if you need to. :)

My wishlist for search functions in the inventory
02-07-2008 04:45
I am pretty good at organizing and cleaning my inventory, but still I have problems finding things in it. So I have fantasies about the following enhancements to the search function in the inventory:

- prim search = would list objects according to the value you ask for; if you enter 3, then it returns a list of all objects that are 3 prims (could also have the option for entering a max and min value)

- user rights search = search for objects that are only trans / mod / copy, or all of them

/me wishes to be as creative at work today...

I weeded lost and found (amazing what you find in there - too bad its all called "object" and you have to spend hours rezzing it all in a LARGE empty area)

When rezzing ''object'' found in inventory, best to go to an area that does not allow scripts. The object, named object, may be one with a nasty griefing script you unknowingly pick up somewhere or accepted.

hi I feel like an angel now with only 10.000,although I am still reducing wildly.good last tip.At xmas I was looking for a star to top my tree.I trolled through inventory until I found Yellow Star, which was a freebie from somewhere.I rezzed this next to my tree and it was a yellow globe particle looking thing I went to place it and it turned into the planets of the solar system in proper orbit and size scale rotating round my plot.Took me 2 hours to clean it up.Beware
